I'm guessing without the opportunity to call a time out, there was a rush of blood, and they tried to win it all with a 3.
Great game though. Can Argentina take it to the Americans? Gee I hope so!
Sounds like someone jealous he cant make the NBL
gaze was an awesome player
and now he is a board member for the basketball australia/nbl, i hope he brings his passion for the game to the table and helps turn things around.
Mate i dont even play basketball im happy with watching... i dont want to play basketball either so im not jealous.
I was never big Gaze fan (being a SE Melb Magic and now Dragons Fan) but gotta respect the guy, saw him at the NBL all star game in a shoot out with Steve Carfino, he only missed 1 shot, pretty good for an old guy. I guess he didnt make it big in the NBA because the NBA puts alot less weight into a player that can nail the 3 anytime they want, compared to a player that can block and dunk.
Gaze is easily one of the greatest shooters there is!!!
He didnt get much stints in the NBA back in those days, as it was much harder for an international player to succeed, as they weren't really given the full opportunities they are given now!!!
But he still does have the ring!!!!! hahaha! Now thats pretty sweet!!!
only the second highest scorer in Olympic history.....but yeah a total joke
I don't know much about Gaze so I won't hate on him.
But it doesn't mean your an amazing player just because you play great in international play.
Knocking nothing away from his #2 scoring position or whatever other records he holds, if you watch Argentina, Luis Scola fills up the score sheet like no other international player right now.
He's the leading scorer for the Olympics if I'm not mistaken and gets like 8 boards, 3 assists etc, if he had played in 5 Olympics or however many Gaze played in he'd rake in the stats too.
But look what he's like in the NBA, definately not a superstar.
I'm not hating, just my 2 cents..
You obviously didn't see the Rockets play much last year than mate. Luis Scola was one of the top 5 rookies and a HUGE reason they won 22 games straight (equal best run in history if I'm not mistaken). He is a legitimate star. Not a superstar yet by any means, but a quality player. I never said Gaze was a superstar, but the FACT is you don't reach those kinds of milestones without some above average ability. Gaze lacked the athleticism to be anything more than a shooter in the NBA. But he proved on every stage he got the opportunity that he could shoot. I never said he was one of the best EVER to play basketball......but he isn't a bunny like the guy was making out and he is easily one of Australia's best products.
Well I did see the Rockets play champ, and Scola was simply outstanding in the second half of the season, after the All-Star break, definately one of the top 5 rookies that's for sure!
But that still doesn't make him a star. Maybe with another season or two in the NBA, no doubt he's a very solid player and he can do some good things, great fundamentals and a good feel for the game, but I think calling 10 ppg and 5 rpg in the league a "legitimate star" is a bit much.
Anyway, I can see by your response that your a big Gaze supporter, and like I said before, I'm not hating on him. I love Australian Basketball and big ups to Gaze for being one of the best ever in this nation. My point was simply, that being great in the international level is extremely different from being great on the NBA level and it doesn't translate across.
example: That's why Brad Newley is one of Australia's top 3 players, and this Australian team was a legitimate top four contender after seeing them play strong against the US and Lithuania, but he can't even scrape it onto an NBA roster yet.
I'm not disagreeing with your opinion or taking shots at Gaze thoughh, everyone to their own.
I'm not a massive Gaze fan mate, but it's like Chad said.....the Gaze comments are just ignorant. My initial comment about him being the 2nd best scorer in Olympic history weren't NBA related. This is an Olympic thread, and Gaze was an Olympic star.....stats speak for themselves. The comments I later made regarding to Gaze in the NBA said he could have done better with more opportunity. Never said because he was 2nd all time in Olympic scorer be would be a star in the NBA. Steve Kerr was far from a star, and that's who I compared him too.
As for Scola's stats, show me how many rookies who could make a big contribution to a great NBA team. With an offense structured around TMac and Yao, your not going to have outstanding stats. It's the quality of the possessions. Scola looked above average when given the opportunity. Put him in Durrants or Horfords situation and I guarantee his stats would have been a lot more impressive.
Anyways, you completely lost the jist of the whole Gaze comments. Say what you want, think what you want, he was a great Olympic scorer......so therefore he wasn't a chump
