He sure was a great player and ambassador for the game. I would hate to think the state Australian basketball would be in without Gaze. The greatest player to put on the green and gold singlet. I was thinking Bogut had a chance to overtake him, but he really didnt have a great Olympics, I was expecting much more.

SBS did cover the Argentina/Greece game and did a great job. i think they showed about 95% of the game.
Channel 7 was terrible last night with the USA game

I was never big Gaze fan (being a SE Melb Magic and now Dragons Fan) but gotta respect the guy, saw him at the NBL all star game in a shoot out with Steve Carfino, he only missed 1 shot, pretty good for an old guy. I guess he didnt make it big in the NBA because the NBA puts alot less weight into a player that can nail the 3 anytime they want, compared to a player that can block and dunk.

Gaze is easily one of the greatest shooters there is!!!

He didnt get much stints in the NBA back in those days, as it was much harder for an international player to succeed, as they weren't really given the full opportunities they are given now!!!

But he still does have the ring!!!!! hahaha! Now thats pretty sweet!!!

Yea thats right, he got his ring as part of the team

yeah thats exactly right.....also lets not forget Gaze played in the NCAA (and also the NCAA Final game which i have a copy of)
even though he didnt get a good chance in the NBA...the guy is fantastic and one of the most genuine sports people in australian sporting history.

I remember when he got his 1999 spurs championship ring. He received it at a Tigers game here in australia and David Stern was on the big screen thanking Gaze and talking about him...was good.
even though he didnt play at all really for the spurs...he had a few nice highlites...and i think any one of us would have loved to have experienced being a part of an NBA team (even if you werent playing!) and traveling etc...would have been fantastic.

i still have a 60 minutes report on video when gaze was with the spurs...and yeah...gaze's spurs played luc lonley's suns...and gaze went to visit luc at his house....hugeee place..and gaze is like to luc "pretty umm....humble place you have here mate!" haha..

good bloke...saw him play a preseason game here..

I would put gaze in the same category as Drazen Petrovic, only Gaze never got a shot in the NBA during his prime.

ohh and ocsar schmidt from Brazil.

The thing about the NBA is there is a lot of politics and opinions/theories. There's plenty of players that never were because they didn't get a good opportunity or the "right" opportunity. When a guy like Steve Kerr is classed as a legend (great player for sure)......I believe Gaze good easily have been the same or more. NBA is a tough place and sometimes your career is in the hands of others

only the second highest scorer in Olympic history.....but yeah a total joke

I don't know much about Gaze so I won't hate on him.

But it doesn't mean your an amazing player just because you play great in international play.

Knocking nothing away from his #2 scoring position or whatever other records he holds, if you watch Argentina, Luis Scola fills up the score sheet like no other international player right now.

He's the leading scorer for the Olympics if I'm not mistaken and gets like 8 boards, 3 assists etc, if he had played in 5 Olympics or however many Gaze played in he'd rake in the stats too.

But look what he's like in the NBA, definately not a superstar.

I'm not hating, just my 2 cents..

You obviously didn't see the Rockets play much last year than mate. Luis Scola was one of the top 5 rookies and a HUGE reason they won 22 games straight (equal best run in history if I'm not mistaken). He is a legitimate star. Not a superstar yet by any means, but a quality player. I never said Gaze was a superstar, but the FACT is you don't reach those kinds of milestones without some above average ability. Gaze lacked the athleticism to be anything more than a shooter in the NBA. But he proved on every stage he got the opportunity that he could shoot. I never said he was one of the best EVER to play basketball......but he isn't a bunny like the guy was making out and he is easily one of Australia's best products.

From what i have seen NBA rewards athleticism more since there is more isolations from man to man defenses, not to mention a longer 3 point line.
FIBA style basketball rewards good ball movement and consistent shooters i guess, plus the shorter 3 point line/zones tends to favour patient shooters.

Do we call Paul Pierce or others NBA stars that have played on the previous dream teams **** because they failed to play well and win in international ball?? Does the fact they couldn't win playing a different league/style mean that?

Goes a long way to prove how different styles of games and rules suit certain players. Send Eddie Crouch to the NBA to ref and the old grouch would call travel and palming on just about every play in an NBA highlight reel from 'so called' talented players that get away with murder fundamentally at times.

All this talk of Gaze being crap is just plain ignorance.

At least the US players have got more respect this time around and it shows. The Boomers are paying the price for not bringing it every game as you should for the olympics and Bogut's injury has hurt as well although he isn't as important as you would think a starting NBA center is.

At least we qualified as we usually reserve our worst ball for that come olympics and world championships.

Well I did see the Rockets play champ, and Scola was simply outstanding in the second half of the season, after the All-Star break, definately one of the top 5 rookies that's for sure!

But that still doesn't make him a star. Maybe with another season or two in the NBA, no doubt he's a very solid player and he can do some good things, great fundamentals and a good feel for the game, but I think calling 10 ppg and 5 rpg in the league a "legitimate star" is a bit much.

Anyway, I can see by your response that your a big Gaze supporter, and like I said before, I'm not hating on him. I love Australian Basketball and big ups to Gaze for being one of the best ever in this nation. My point was simply, that being great in the international level is extremely different from being great on the NBA level and it doesn't translate across.

example: That's why Brad Newley is one of Australia's top 3 players, and this Australian team was a legitimate top four contender after seeing them play strong against the US and Lithuania, but he can't even scrape it onto an NBA roster yet.

I'm not disagreeing with your opinion or taking shots at Gaze thoughh, everyone to their own.

I'm not a massive Gaze fan mate, but it's like Chad said.....the Gaze comments are just ignorant. My initial comment about him being the 2nd best scorer in Olympic history weren't NBA related. This is an Olympic thread, and Gaze was an Olympic star.....stats speak for themselves. The comments I later made regarding to Gaze in the NBA said he could have done better with more opportunity. Never said because he was 2nd all time in Olympic scorer be would be a star in the NBA. Steve Kerr was far from a star, and that's who I compared him too.

As for Scola's stats, show me how many rookies who could make a big contribution to a great NBA team. With an offense structured around TMac and Yao, your not going to have outstanding stats. It's the quality of the possessions. Scola looked above average when given the opportunity. Put him in Durrants or Horfords situation and I guarantee his stats would have been a lot more impressive.

Anyways, you completely lost the jist of the whole Gaze comments. Say what you want, think what you want, he was a great Olympic scorer......so therefore he wasn't a chump

I'm not going to talk about Scola, because we can speculate all we want about what players would do if they were in different teams, but that could be done with every player and in make a million different situations. One things for sure if he was in Seattle he wouldn't have even played, stuck behind Wilcox and Collison.

Secondly, if I've lost the whole jist of the Gaze comments, so have you, because I never said Gaze was a chump, crap or a bad player and didn't say one negative thing about him. If you read my posts, you'd see that I constantly say I'm not hating on him and I give him props for what he's done for Aus basketball.

Those comments Chad made about people being ignorant about Gaze have got 0% relevance to me because I never passed judgement on him, I only offered my opinion on the difference between performing in international play and NBA play, which somehow got you fired up about Gaze.

Perhaps you've misinterpreted what I was trying to say, or my perception on player/s such as Andrew Gaze, if so, my apologies. :v:
