How much have Man U spent on players this off season?? I know Owen was a free last year - do u think they got him thru a lack of funds to spend??

AHHHHHH big mistake to underestimate the Liverpool machine! We had a lot of injuries last year that would test any squads depth and a lot in fighting in the club. The addition of Joe Cole is Massive and i think Hodgson is a A class manager. He has a fantastic record and I think will improve our side ten fold. Yes we have lost some players and likely to lose some more however with that comes extra $$$ to replace those and increase our depth. Don't forget we came a close second the season before with pretty much the same squad as last year so you can see how injuries played their part. I can see us getting our champions league spot back this year but thats about it. However add a bit more depth and some more creativity in the midfield and we can certainly make a challenge. Remember for all those Chelsea and Man City fans out there buying themselves titles........ sometimes too many cooks can spoil the broth!

well i'm not sure, lets just hope the stupid Glazers sell the club off to someone who can do the job properly.

We got Valencia when we got Owen, so we had money. I honestly didn't rate him but what a player he has turned into now.

This season we have signed two players, Smailing and Hernandez so not much spent. As SAF was saying he is so glad his scouts spotted Hernandez before the World Cup and signed him because there were no clubs really looking to buy him but after a great World Cup for himself i bet some big teams would be looking to sign him.

Glazers are the best thing that's happened to Man U. :D

That and Liverpool's owners!!

Heafy- so u chose liverpool in the poll but don't think they'll win? FAir enough - they do look stronger than last year (I'm presuming Torres will return) Hodgson is a great manager but do have the depth? 2 weeks to sort your team!!

Also u can talk all u want about City and Chelsea buying the title but Every team has bought the title probably since Man U had that streak with Beckham, Neville's etc.

Liverpool have produced no decent talent since Gerarrd. Compare that to City who's first XI regularly feature Micah Richards, Stephen Ireland, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Nedum Onuoha, Derrick Boyata, Vlad Weiss (who came thru our academy from age 15). There's no denying City have spent truckloads but we have a great academy and continue to develop as much home talent as anyone except perhaps West Ham. It's a huge part of the Sheik's plans - he spent heaps totally redeveloping the whole academy set up.

i think United have had some great talent through their academy, looking for a full list of First Team regulars who have come through academy.

is it just me that wants a Serious EPL Card Set soon?

I have collected Match Attax for a couple of seasons and you eventually get sick of all the base cards stacking up and only a few inserts.

That's why i've been thinking, what about a Select (AFL, NRL, Cricket) like set for the EPL?

By this i mean sweet auto's and some good looking inserts

In Match Attax there is auto cards but are impossible to find, and you turn to eBay, the Find Fabregas ones were going for $500+ but were reasonably rare on eBay.

theres one called Match Attax, they aren't too bad but are a kiddy like set and after a while just get boring.

I would love some Auto's, Fabregas, Torres, Rooney and Gerrard anyone?

I don't get bored of Match Attax because they introduce extras and there are loads of inserts to collect...

we didn't get any Extra in our area so couldn't get any. It's not that it is a boring set, i just find after a while the excitement wears off because the lack of mid to high end inserts, i found it impossible to get 100 clubs, i bought so many packs and have only got two that i got off eBay (Van der Sar Extra 08/9, MA 09/10)

I agree, the Match Attax are ok (as there isn't anything else). The Futera World Football cards are great, with plenty of autos and gu, but are more of a 'National' team series. I'd definitely prefer either a dedicated Premier League set or Champions League if someone could get the licence. I think that as Topps UK have the licence for the Premier League, they really need to lift their game. Match Attax are ok, apart from that, they release Premier League stickers every year... a more premium set from Topps would be sensational. Doesn't appear to be anything on the cards though...

goal.com's Top 20 Summer Transfers:

1. David VILLA Valencia to Barcelona - €40m

The blockbuster deal of the summer so far. 'El Guaje' will add more firepower to an already explosive Barcelona attack. After his successful World Cup exploits with Spain, he should be the odds on favourite to win the Pichichi.

2. Marouane CHAMAKH Bordeaux to Arsenal - Free

A classic Arsenal value buy that has the potential to be an extremely saavy signing. The ex-Bordeaux striker gives the Gunners a much needed aerial presence up front and could terrorise opposing backlines this season with Robin van Persie.

3. Yaya TOURE Barcelona to Manchester City - €29m

City have flexed their financial muscle this summer and the Ivorian adds more steel to an already industrial strength midfield. Will team up with brother Kolo on the defensive side for the Citizens.

4. Simon KJAER Palermo to Wolfsburg - €14m

Wolfsburg pulled one the coups of the summer by luring the defensive stalwart to the Bundesliga. The German outfit beat such heavyweights as Manchester United, Liverpool and AC Milan to the punch to land the highly-rated Danish defender.

5. ADRIANO Correia Sevilla to Barcelona - €9.5+4m

Joins former Sevilla team-mate Dani Alves at Barcelona and the wing-back gives coach Pep Guardiola another weapon to unleash against his opponents across a variety of positions.

6. David SILVA Valencia to Manchester City - €30.2m

The uber-talented winger takes his trickery to Manchester after seven years in Spain. Did not play a major role in la Furia Roja's triumph in South Africa but will hope to justify his lofty price-tag by helping City qualify for the Champions League.

7. Joe COLE Liverpool to Chelsea - Free

The England winger will have something to prove after his substitute's role in South Africa and his unceremonious departure from Stamford Bridge, where he was deemed surplus to requirements. Chelsea's discarded trash could prove to be Liverpool's treasure.

8. Pedro LEON Getafe to Real Madrid - €10m

Makes the intra-city switch to the Merengues after helping Getafe qualify for the Europa League with a sixth-place finish. Comfortable with the ball at his feet the versatile winger could surprise many who have yet to see him play.

9. Aleksandr KOLAROV Lazio to Manchester City - €19.3m

The Serb will be keen to show off his rocket of a left foot for the Citizens. His marauding runs into opposition territory will sorely be missed by Lazio fans but will be a thing to behold for the City faithful at Eastlands.

10. Javier HERNANDEZ Chivas Guadalajara to Manchester United - €9.7m

'Chicharito' makes the jump from Mexico to England with the Red Devils. He did his reputation no harm at the World Cup with Mexico and has already been hailed as 'first class' by new manager Alex Ferguson. Hernandez is definitely one for the future.

11. FILIPE Luis Deportivo La Coruna to Athletico Madrid - €12m

The dynamic Brazilian left-back will hope to put the horrific injury he suffered last season behind him and force his way into Mano Menezes' new look Selecao squad with an impressive campaign for Atletico. Gives los Colchoneros an attacking threat from the back as they look to improve on their disappointing ninth-place finish last term.

12. Mehmet TOPAL Galatasaray to Valencia - €4m

The 24-year-old leaves his homeland for a Spanish adventure and will be entrusted with the task of protecting his new side's back four. The Euro 2008 participant could end up being an inspired purchase at a bargain-basement price.

13. ADRIANO Ribeiro Flamengo to AS Roma - Free

'The Emperor' will win over the hearts and minds of the Roman people if he can lead the Giallorossi to their first Serie A title since the 2000-01 campaign. He needs to exorcise the demons that haunted him at Inter to break his old club's stranglehold on the Scudetto.

14. Roberto SOLDADO Getafe to Valencia - €8m

Los Che are relying on Soldado to fill the shoes of the departed David Villa. The former Real Madrid man could be the striker to fire in enough goals to eradicate the duopoly at the top of the Liga table.

15. Milan JOVANOVIC Standard Liege to Liverpool - Free

The price was certainly right for the cash strapped Reds to snap up the Serbian attacker from Standard Liege. Jovanovic can win over the Anfield faithful with the type of performances that saw him win the Jupiler League's Player of the Year in 2009.

16. Leonardo BONUCCI Bari to Juventus - €15.5m

Succumbed to the Old Lady's advances and has the potential to be Italy's next great centre-back. He should slot in nicely beside Giorgio Chiellini to minimise the defensive mishaps that plagued the Bianconeri last season.

17. Sami KHEDIRA Stuttgart to Real Madrid - €13.6m

He was one of the first names on Germany coach Joachim Loew's team sheet in the World Cup. He used the South African jamboree as his coming out party and his solid showings convinced Real Madrid to come calling for his services.

18. Yossi BENAYOUN Liverpool to Chelsea - €6.6m

Parlayed his successful 2009-10 campaign with Liverpool into a move to Stamford Bridge. With Joe Cole and Michael Ballack no longer at the club the Israeli playmaker might be able to find room to strut his stuff in the midfield.

19. Thierry HENRY Barcelona to New York Red Bulls - Free

Traded the hot summer nights in Barcelona for the bright lights of the Big Apple. The ex-Gunner already came back to haunt old north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in a pre-season friendly with New York Red Bulls and has shown early signs of creating a formidable partnership with former Premier League striker Juan Pablo Angel.

20. RAUL Real Madrid to Schalke - Free

With playing time set to be limited under new Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho, Raul opted to leave the Blancos for Bundesliga outfit Schalke. He has impressed in the pre-season so far and should be a legitimate goalscoring threat for Felix Magath's side.

I can't wait for the start now, we have got foxtel at home just in time for the EPL and the A-League.
As much as I want united to win, I think we lack a spark in the midfield.
I go for Phoenix in the A-League and I think they're looking promising, although I think people are overrating them after New Zealand's performance at the world Cup.

I think the midfield will cope fine this season, i think we'll start like this:

VDS
Evra Vidic Evans Rafael
Giggs/ Nani Fletcher Scholes Valencia
Rooney Berbatov

why do you go for the phoenix if your from melbourne?

I think he's Kiwi mate.

Good list that thanks Warney - good to see 3 City buys in the top 10. Our other purchase - Boateng from Germany to me is our most important signing but because he's a defender, probably a bit less fashionable. I see Torres is staying at Liverpool this morning. Good news for them except he's hurt!
