What has become of this forum...

ill be honest i havent been back in months and months to here.
And you know what i blame....... the cards themselves.
I know i have lost all interest in card collecting and i know about 5 others who are with me. We all used to frequent forums, talk, show, and swap cards.
But the cards that are being offered are crap.
Select have listened in years and have put out the same utter shite time after time. They are single handedly killing the hobby!
i dont blame others like teamcoach etc as they can only do so much.
The sooner people stop buying new select products and boxes the better. the sooner they die and other people can have a crack or the sooner the AFL hands out another licence for some competition the better. And i feel thats the only way id come back to the hobby that i do love!
The last set i actually really got excited over was pulling the Wingards in the set footycards made!

So in short, afl give another licence out or select listen to collectors wants or hurry up and go bankrupt!

This may or may not be completely off topic, but I thought I would just add a few things that I have a small problem with.

I would like to add that I have sent several requests for prices, not having a lot to trade at the time. What I get back (if I get anything back) is sorry mate it's gone. Now if it's sold or traded, why not take it off the list you have for sale or trade ?

Another BIG question for anyone who would like to answer, Were do some of you get your prices from ?

I understand that some of you are here to make money, I fully understand that. However when you pay $2000 (series 2 select for arguments sake) for a case which has 1 case card (possible signature card), 1 premiership redemption, 2 redemption cards (possibly more, I pulled 4 out of case last year) 18 draft signatures (depending on boxes per case), Medal cards (1 per box), all Australian cards (4 per box) and then you have the fuzz ball they throw in every year. Last year was the prime draft set (1 per box) and draft eminence set (6 per box). There are more that I haven't listed, I'm sure. Then you have normal team sets and full sets.

Now lets do some math, on last years. Case card $50 (average). Premiership redemption $150 (average). Signature redemption $500 x2 (average). Draft signatures $30-40 (will say $35 dollars). Medal cards $15-$25 (will say $20). All Australian $5-$10 (will say $7.50). Prime draft $50-$100 (will say $75) Prime draft eminence $10-$30 (will say $20). Let's do a quick calculation (without the prime draft) on all that $2730......Remember that's not the top dollar price, that's the middle of the road price.... With the prime draft $6240..... Now my math could be wrong..... This also does not take into account low card numbers ! Also does not take into account case signature card or getting more than 2 signature redemption cards.

So at the end of the day you pay somewhere in the area of $2000 ( I paid less) and then you make $4000 per case WTF sorry to anyone offended by my wtf. I offer you $80 for a prime draft that you have $150 I don't see that as low balling, I see that as honest and I can go on & on. I read the posts, I'm on here every other day reading. You can complain about low balling all day long a card is only worth what somebody will pay. You can sit on that card until you get what you think it is worth (or like me) you can sell or trade to get more of what you need.

After taking out what I need (only Western Bulldogs cards) & selling some (starting price was .99c my starting price this year will be $5 inc reg post) & giving away several team sets & full sets to others, I made about $200 on my case & I still needed to buy more !

That's what is really wrong, 98% of participants here & everywhere else want top dollar. I say 98% because I have dealt with people on here that are willing to do a deal. I come here to try & find the cards I am missing & to help others who need it if I can, I will.

Anyone want to put in an order for series 2 select go for it. Otherwise I will try to work out the trade list when I get them in, They will be up for a week (removed if not traded or sold) then listed elsewhere. If I get it & don't need it 1st in 1st served.

Let me state the obvious.....

I get what your saying, I for 1 get my prices from eBay sold prices and either match it or sell a bit under, use the same concept when I'm buying and people say make an offer, I read the Facebook trading groups a lot and the prices people ask are ridiculous, the problem is most people google there card and get there prices off card zone website, so they think that's what it's worth when most of the time it's not worth half, at the end of the day something is only worth what someone wants to pay.

You will rarely make money back from a case.

Yea have to agree on that, I did make money on a case of future force last year but got lucky and pulled a Boyd and scharenberg gold and the other gold was a low number so made my money back just on the golds

Not to be nasty or anything & only having bought 3 cases in my life. If I hadn't given cards away and I got there average price, I think I would be up somewhere in the area of $1500-$2000 (at least). But I believe, even after all this time that one day those good deeds will come back to me........

I'm still waiting, the cards I give away tend to be to young collectors who can't afford $450 for a gold signature card. Now I could trade that card for something I need but I am trying to encourage future card collectors to continue collecting. With out them doing the right thing we end up were we are now.... Over inflated prices (cardzone can kiss my ar**) and a lack of trading to help one another.

At the end of the day TRADING is why I came here....... If I want to buy, there are several places I can go.

This year I will probably have more to trade than ever. If I have what you want & you have what I want lets trade card for card, it that simple. Until someone makes it difficult, it's very simple.

I'm the same as you mate, I love trading and I collect.

But if I didn't get case card sigs last year, I wouldn't have got my money back on my 2 Prime cases.

The redemptions you were lucky to get 200 for and one seller in particular was dumping all the inserts on ebay for next to nothing, making it impossible to sell.

I think at times we don't really help ourselves either - as there are only two Select releases (excluding the "one-offs" like the Hill Brothers and Tri-Signature cards), there is generally a lot of complaining about a) lack of competition b) the "child-oriented" nature of Series one and c) the "lack of originality" of the releases...yet low and behold, within hours of purchase we flood the Sale/Trade forum with pages and pages of threads, having purchased numerous boxes (and/or cases) of the product.

To me it is a bit like being half-pregnant.

Cases for 2 grand sign me up for that is everyone getting them for that price

How much are you paying ? The other part of that is it was an example/estimate price, just like all the rest were !

most series 2 cases go for around $2700.
if you can get them for $2000 then everyone will get them off you.

That's a great point and one that I had not think of at all.

It got me thinking, what's changed since I collected as a kid in the lates 80s.Not much.

I think Select is still trying to cater to the collector who will collect the whole base set, as you used to back then.

The other thing is they don't seem to have learnt or picked anything up from the US sports.

What's changed:

• Technology obviously better
• Chewing gum is gone
• Teamcoach is there for the kids - this is the funny thing, they've released this with kids in mind, but haven't really changed anything to cater for adult collectors really
• Signatures and case cards are there, but still very rare

What I think they need:

• Game used cards
• smaller sets
• High end product - for the adults
• Some sort of theme, running across seasons - eg. brownlow or rising star sig every year
• buyback autos - imagine pulling a Dermott Brereton Scanlens card auto'd (or similar)
• jersey/ball purchases and then using (like they did in the Hawks set), but also there was a mailday here recently of Max Bailey's GF warm up top, imagine if Select purchased it and then used it as a redemption or a jersey card.
• use some innovation from the US - holograms (have tried with footy flix), parallels, refractors

Exactly mate.... haha when i wrote my rant i was also having a bad day so sorry for the language lol.
But thats exactly what i want / mean.
It cant be as hard as what select make it. Not once have i even seen a survey or something of the like to gauge reaction of thier cards or what people would like to see.
Any negative feedback that select sees or what not gets deleted, pushed aside or never spoken of.
But while they are pulling in the big bucks why would they change?
Time to let another comapny loose with a licence from the afl to compete with select!

Just on your ideas, never thought of it but a buy back would be awesome! even if they used some modern commans even!
Take a wanganeen from the 1997 set, have him sign 25 and hand number every one from 1 to 25....... Id want one!

The hobby in Australia seems to be stagnating at the moment, what these card manufacturers need to do is rejuvenate the hobby with new ideas (and implementing them).

I believe @Billyhoyle suggestions have nailed it on the head.

We can't keep dancing around the game worn jersey cards anymore, these should have been in packets 5 years ago. Card collecting in Australia has evolved well since the 1990's downturn and holding back these advances will only come back to bite them in the rear side one day (and sadly the hobby too).

I think this will help in kick starting the hobby again:

Game Worn jersey's and matched used balls
Buyback Auto
Limited high end release
More interaction between the players and collectors

Yep you are off the mark.
The price in the thread is the delivered price, which you have not factored in when comparing it. The price on the other site is $202.80 delivered, so pretty much the same.
These are being done by a business, not just a member of the forum, so obviously he has to factor in his cut etc. He has supported the forum previously and I'm sure will continue too.
If you can find someone willing to sell at wholesale then please let me know.
I'm not sure on the case card, something that could be asked in the case share thread.
