With my work I get around a bit.

Today I'm in Lidcombe and enjoying a coffee at the lovely old Lidcombe Oval.

This is where the mighty Western Suburbs Magpies played after moving from Ashfield.

Even still has the old wood benchs where you get splinters in your bum.

Buckets of blood, clouds of dust...I sense the ghosts and stinging face slaps from Tommy and the 1978 Victa fibros.

Apparently a 'Return to Lidcombe' Day at Lidcombe Oval Saturday May 26 for NSW Cup.

It's been done through Cumberland Council and will be on their website soon.

Half time, full time kick on field.

Also for IP hunters some of the old Magpies players will be there.

As a real league fan I want the best players playing each week . If that’s worth 2 weeks pretty sad the way things are going. Should change the nrl to Austag to keep the softy’s happy . If anything it’s probably made sezer a better player?

I agree with your first point about the best playing each week unless you break the rules like Burgess did. Just because he is an elite player it doesn’t mean he gets a free pass. If this had been a lesser known player it wouldn’t have even been talked about. The contact was high and careless hence the grading and with his form it was only going to go this way.

Best way to hurt someone is in the hip pocket . I agree with fines rather then suspensions for things like this . Cheap shots and deliberate foul play obviously need a suspension but for a hard tackle such as this one , all it’s done is make life hard for his teammates for the next 2 weeks and give the fans a lesser quality souffs game.

They have got the fines system in place for lesser charges, it seems to go okay. The positive of suspension is that this is what hurts the player, particularly an elite player and the club the most.

Unfortunately for Burgess he is what you might call a recidivist offender. It is a fine line between being tough and hard nosed and getting it wrong as Burgess did.

He is Souths most important and influential player, I am sure the legal team would have discisssed every possible way to get him out of this one but sometimes you can’t defend the indefensible.

Soliola copped 6 for that terrible hit. I am not comparing it to Burgess, it was far worse. Soliola is a similar hard nosed player and leader of the pack, he tried to hit Slater hard and got it very wrong and copped his suspension.

Couldn't agree with you more Brendan, Burgess might have not even got a suspension if he didn't have any previous offences to his name. Losing burgess would hurt more than a fine in this instance where as a player not as influential a fine would hurt more

clubs will have a specific sponsor lined up to pay fines for a particular player if he /or she is an integral part of the club, ie burgess.
If it come's down to that scenario.
Clubs always find a way around rules/ or bend them, to combat whatever is thrown at them.
Suspension is the only way to make players learn.
S h i t when I was suspended back in the day for ruff play, I had to learn alternative ways to hurt the opposition.
We all have brains and coaches to learn with.
