I like the idea simply for a larger range of players on the cards, a better alternative in my opinion would be having rookie players on your low end inserts.
Rather than someone like Smith and Inglis getting 5+ cards each use newbies like Mann or Johnston.. Even an under 20 low end star player card or the simple rising star/rookie insert
I think it's affordable. Select used to have different photos for their parallel cards, so 24 photos per team set, so another 6 photos per team to make it an 18 player team set should be fine.
Not sure how much players get paid to create a base set card of them, but I don't think it would be horribly cost prohibitive. That Champions set a few years ago that had all the rookies must have gone close, 12 players per team set and then another 3 or 4 rookies per team.
I think 18 player team sets is the future, and I actually can't believe they haven't done it yet.

I hope ESP release club folders/binders like Selects 2008 ones. Hopefully they'll be thicker too to fit more in there or a special top loader binder. I bought one of the '08 ones off DansNRLCollectables recently, he told me its the last one he's got and that the supplier is out of them
As a team collector I would like a bigger base set as well, however as a compromise (if image pricing or set size is an issue) how about a simple header card with the club emblem on the front with a spot down the bottom for a signature and on the back a photo of the whole years squad. That way you could get the whole squad signed for those so inclined and it would still only be a 9 /12 card set, but for us team collectors it could be 27+

Hopefully something this week. select/afl are releasing something this week I think, so esp should surely get a word out at least to counter them and gain interest.
It'd be nice to know what we are saving for besides the obvious sig cards

Went to the QLD Maroon Fan Day in Sydney today & spoke to Cam Smith, I asked him if he signed any sig cards recently & he said "Yes, I think to be released later in the year.."
I had a quick chat with someone I know and they confirmed that Michael Gordon is the Sharks signature.
Also heard a little rumour that the Souths signature card is John Sutton...not confirmed though.
Its starting to look more and more like Girds' list he posted is pretty much on the mark with these signatures being based on the players of the year! (Except for SBW I believe they couldn't get him to sign but not 100% on this)
