Alex McKinnon

i want him to play too, i just didnt get the whole process and i cant imagine des being to happy about it. and from all reports mcleans been a mess and didnt want to play ever again, bit of a quick turn around

It's a joke. It's obvious he's going to get much longer than a week's suspension, why don't the Storm show some respect and accept him not playing this weekend?

I was actually expecting an apology from Cameron Smith over the deplorable way he carried on when the injury initially happened on Monday ... but I should have known better than to expect anything apart from self interest from this disgusting club.

Ha ha didn't take long for the storm bagging and getting of the subject.
Why don't you kick melbourne and qld clubs out then, I don't think a lot off Sydney ppl will be happy till its just a Sydney game and dies a slow death. I live in Melbourne and we sometimes get bigger crowds in local footy compared to Sydney nrl games.
So quit wineing about the other clubs and just be happy they is a competition at all.
And as I said back on subject, I hope Alex pulls through well and I'm sure storm will cop whatever the Maclean outcome is...

This has got nothing to do with anything I posted. I live in NZ, so I'm all for expanding the game and have no issue with there being a club in Melbourne. But that is a lot more off topic than my post.

yeah i wasnt happy with the way cameron smith carried on either, mckinnon couldn't move his legs and smith was more worried about not conceding a penalty. in saying that i still think mclean doesnt deserve the hefty suspension your all waiting for.

I'm not even too bothered how long he goes for, I'm sure he feels bad enough as it is. It will obviously be over a week though, which is why I find it very classless that Melbourne would go to such lengths to ensure he plays this weekend.

What I want to see is the NRL, refs and judiciary come out and announce that they will deal extremely harshly with any player who lifts the legs in tackles from this round onwards. It should be an automatic send off, and a month long suspension. There's absolutely no need to do it ... and if those measures prevent another injury like this happening even once in the next 20 years, then it will be worth it.

The highlight of andrew johns's defence imo was him lifting a player front on and sitting him on his arse/back? Send him off? Do you make it second/third man in cant lift? Too much grey area

His shoulder always went into the players stomach, that's not lifting the legs.

Legs still came off the ground, how would refs judge this on the field? And if you got the video ref involved games would go for three hours

I mean someone who is only grabbing the legs and lifting them, not completing a traditional front on tackle.

Easy enough to police. There's grey areas with everything, but that's pretty black and white.

Just penalising those who go above the horizontal is treating the symptom, not the cause.

I think most of the damage was done by the other 2 players, with their weight coming down on Alex, if you watch the footage around the 30second mark,(post 17 first page) you can see Bromwich landing with his full weight, wouldn't surprise me if that's where most damage was caused....

Wouldn't penalising players who lift the legs also be considered treating the symptom, rather than the cause.
You automatically suspend players for a type of tackle won't stop players from doing them. The game has improved as there are way less "dangerous tackles" than existed 10, 20 years ago. Look at shoulder charges way less than there used to be because of the suspensions but players still do it.

How do players end up on their heads if their legs haven't been lifted?

I think if you hand out tough enough consequences those types of tackles will stop happening pretty quickly. Just my view though.

There are a lot of good lifting tackles done where players don't land on their head that would get penalised under your view.

When they banned the choulder charge you could still see some good shoulder charges where there was no contact to the head getting penalised due to a blanket ban on shoulder charges.

For both shoulder charges that hit the head and and tackles that go beyond the horizontal there needs to be some tougher penalties. To do a blanket ban on lifting tackles will see a similar thing as shoulder charges with good tackles being penalised due to a ban.

Lol. This is just pretty ignorant/silly and showing a clear lack of understanding for the rules and the game really.

The rule is and should be with regard to grabbing the inner leg and lifting. It has been this way for as long as I remember, that is where you end up with the really dangerous positions and spear tackles etc.

While more recently there is more of a blanket rule with regards to going above the horizontal, which is fine, a front on tackle that is a lift and plant them backwards is just never going to be even remotely as close to as dangerous as any tackle where the hand is placed between the legs and lifted.

Andrew johns tackle technique was something you could teach kids. Prop low, shoulder drive, leg drive. Placing hands between legs was something I was taught not to do from the age of 4 when I first started playing.

It's just ridiculous that this is actually being taught into these guys as a new Melbourne tactic to slow the play the ball down after the new rule changes. I don't even blame the kid for doing it but the coaching staff who are teaching the players this should hang their heads in shame and I hope they all feel as awful as possible after what happened to Alex.

That's obviously what caused the damage, the total weight with him landing so awkwardly.

But the real point still remains that he never should have been put in that position to begin with.

This seems like an over reaction. I thought cam smiths behavior was disgusting. I have spoken to some mates who are die hard QLDers who have said they lost a large amount of respect for their state captain from his actions after the fact the other night.

If you asked any true rugby league fan who a serious injury like this was most likely to happen against I reckon the majority would say Melbourne. They are innovative and always looking for new ways to push the boundaries of the laws of the game. It is one of the reasons they have been so successful for so long, but also why they have come under a lot of scrutiny for introducing these things into the game.

I don't think there was any malice in the tackle, and I don't really think he should get a lengthy suspension for it. I do hope it is a wake up call for coaching staff though who think it's ok to teach and ask their players to use this technique.
