"Alex McKinnon was taken to hospital for scans following a neck injury in Monday night’s game against the Melbourne Storm at AAMI Park.

Scan results for Alex McKinnon confirm a fracture at C4 and C5.

His spinal cord is not severed but the doctors are unsure about the level of spinal cord compromise.

It will be a number of days or weeks until the extent of his injury is known.

Alex’s family have now arrived in Melbourne and are with him, along with Club doctor Peter McGeoch and Club officials.

When there is additional information, an update will be provided."

What a shame...... I really feel for the poor guy.
It was a sickening Tackle to watch.
Hope he pulls through and is on his feet very soon.

feel very sorry for him and his family, i could see the distress he was in just after it screaming that he couldn't move his legs.

in saying that though i do agree with ben ikin, the more i watched it the more i thought he kind of did it to himself in the tackle.

i just hope he can walk again for christ sake, i think he should give up the nrl and just count his blessings if he makes a full recovery

Did it to himself? It would never have happened if the Melbourne number 16 hadn't grabbed him between his legs and lifted.

That guy should get a hefty suspension. There's a reason lifting a player beyond the horizontal is against the rules of the game.

well i think he did it to himself, was probably a natural thing he didnt want to face plant in the turf, so hes tucked his head under and its got crushed. just my opinion, ben ikin said the same thing last night as it unfolded.

insaying that i still think they should get a hefty suspension. now you cant wrestle on the ground, the new tackle technique from melbourne, is pick them up and spin them 180 degrees to slow their play the ball down.

What's he meant to do? Bend his neck so his head goes the other way and if the tackler keeps lifting he risks his head getting snapped back in the other direction!

It was the tacklers who put him in the extremely dangerous position. McKinnon did what he could to try and get out of it, but when you aren't sure where the ground is, don't know what the people who are lifting you are going to do, and this all happens in a split second, I think it's ridiculous to blame the guy getting tackled.

well i believe he was in an awkward position, and his face was about to kiss the turf so he did a natural thing and avoided that and tried to tuck and roll, and he didnt get far enough and copped a crusher, making it a horrible accident. the fact the nrl has actually stood down jorden mclean is an absolute pisstake though, i guarantee if it was billy slater 'oh its not in his nature' ' he feels so bad about it'...

thats my last comment on the issue though, i just hope he makes a speedy recovery and his body is fully functional when he does recover.

WOW, awful tackle. If specialist says the cord is not severed then all neurological deficit is from swelling and/or bony fragments from the fracture. However, long term compression even from swelling can cause permanent deficit. Let's hope the Dr's can control the swelling and he makes a full and speedy recovery

Yeah it is becoming annoying that people are saying even it was "kinda his own fault" or anything along those lines. He really shouldn't have been in that position to begin with and wasn't the first time in the game that Melbourne had used the tackle technique or been penalised for putting a player in a dangerous position. Alex made a split second decision to try to tuck and roll given the position he found himself in and no one could or should blame him in any way for what's happened to him.

It was obviously an accident and there was no intent for that to happen but I hope that I stop hearing people say it was his fault. He never should have been in that spot to begin with.

I really really hope he gets the best result possible and has a full recovery.

There is a reason that you do not lift a players leg when tackling and that is because these type of incidents will occur.

There is no reason to lift an opponents leg other than to shove his head into the ground.

Did it to himself my ass.

Not sure how true the rumour going around on twitter is but i did see someone report that they were going to put him into an induced Coma to help with the recovery process.

Hope he comes out of this ok!

The game is probably to blame for Alex McKinnon's injury rather than any one player.

In this day and age players try to slow the play the ball down by getting a player to the gorund and then on his back. From what I saw one of Alex McKinnon's legs was still on the ground so it wasn't as though they picked him up three feet in the air and speared him to the ground. They were just trying to get him to the ground and then on to the back.

Unfortunateley it all went wrong and he went down on the back of his neck.

I feel sorry for all involved Alex McKinnon for his injury and the players involved in the tackle having to live with it.

On Monday night scan results for Alex McKinnon confirmed a dislocation at C4 and C5.

McKinnon had emergency surgery early on Tuesday morning to stabilise his neck, which consisted of a disc removal at C4 and C5 and anterior fusion.

Alex had additional scans on Tuesday afternoon, which confirmed a devastating spinal injury.

Alex remains in hospital in intensive care and may require further surgery to stabilise his spine.

He has movement in his right arm and the uncertainty remains in regeneration, with a variable prognosis.

The doctors explained regeneration and recovery could be up to two years.

Family and Club officials remain with Alex in hospital. The Club requests Alex and his families privacy is respected at this time.

;(

all players in the rugby league community have been warned for years now not to lift the legs, as said previously melbourne continue to do it, the player that lifted and turned will feel like a right royal prick for years to come and may even think of giving the game away, this has happened before, in the seventies and eighties.
Unfortunately it is the game we play and have played, so it is just pot luck if you get hurt.
What do you do.
A SUSPEND THE PLAYER IN QUESTION.
B FINE HIM.
C FINE THE CLUB.
D ALL OF THE ABOVE.
I say D.
Hope Alex makes a full recovery.

te="GiRDS-, post: 1436138, member: 2924"]Jordan Mclean is playing this weekend? wtf[/quote]

Can't really see the problem with him playing.
Obviously I'm a storm supporter from my profile so I'll get attacked here.
I hope Alex mckinon future is bright and everything works out for him but you can't
stand down a player until he has his hearing so until then i think it's play as normal.
