Official 2013-14 NBA Regular Season Thread - SPOILERS!

But we didn't need a good starter because our starting five is set! I've said this a million times and I'll say it again. We didn't need the number one pick this season. We didn't need a flat out superstar that needs to dominate from game one. We needed effective and solid role players to round out our bench. Chris Grant has said they choose Bennett because to Cleveland he was the best Player available and the player with the most talent
So it was the benches fault you ended up in the lottery? Seriously if your starting 5 is that locked then you are not a lottery team. Lottery teams are there because they need to upgrade and we are not talking about the 12th or 13th pick here, you had number one.

In all this I hope he improves, I hope that the 0-15 was just some crazy ass start to the season. But seriously you need to stop coming up with excuses.

I just think they need to get Bennet some easy interior baskets; rotate, get him a good mismatch and an easy two, or run a couple pick'n'rolls for him, once he gets a few shots in and a couple hits from the charity stripe, he'll start to find his way and get some confidence back.

Problem i've always had with Dwight in MVP talks is how much does he actually show up to help him team win games? From what i've seen he tends to go missing when everyone else is playing poorly, instead of taking over and turning things around. I've never seen him as a game winner - just a nice "piece".

MVP so far: CP3 miles in front, Paul George, Kevin Love - with Anthony Davis my dark horse at the moment :) And all the usual suspects will be up there by season's end, LBJ, KD, Drose etc.
The other problem i see with Dwight this year is how effective can he be playing big minutes in a tight game at PF playing beside another big that cant go far from the ring?

I know season is early but could Dwight howard be the most improved player by the end of season and if so will M.V.P. be in the cards .

Dude's back problems look forgotten .Free throws are going down .

(hoping for nasty BIG MAN dunks from howard hey maybe even oden and bynum) .Hoping we see bynum dunk on howard now thats better .(WITH A CRAZY TECHNICAL)lol.

No way.

I actually think Anthony Davis has already overtaken Dwight as the best C in the League now.

Howard is shooting 56% from the FT line, hardly respectable.

He's also not even the best player on his team.

Houston should be a top 2 seed in the West so he may gather interest as an MVP candidate but I don't think he'll be close to getting it.

I agree. They have given him limited minutes so far. He made a few 3's in preseason so I don't think he should go away from that, it's clearly a big part of his game. He rebounds well. I think the Cavs may be getting set for a trade. TT or possibly Varejao (they tried to trade him last year). This is why the no. 1 pick is a waste right now. Why not play him 25 mins at least?

At the end of the day, MCW is getting a lot of attention right now because of his great start, so why wouldn't Bennett receive the same for his poor start as No.1?

* how bout the knicks losing to the damn bobcats at home today! cant believe that... they'll be screwed if chandlers knee injury from today is serious, it didnt look great, the owner already not happy
* bledsoe the star in phoenix that i was predicting, been big so far for them, will need him even more now with dragic injury
* denver nuggets looking shaky... they are the only winless team that isn't in rebuild mode - not looking great early on, after ty lawson all players seem to be struggling... case in point, nate robinson averaging same rebounds as starting centre mozgov!
* the pacers look very strong defensively... theyve made some nice changes to their bench and i reckon theyve re-tooled so well that this might be the team that unseats miami in the east due to their defense
* isaiah thomas playing some great ball early for sacramento as well
* rudy gay stinking it up in toronto at the moment shooting 32% and not even teams leading scorer... not good for raptors who are looking to deal him - trade value not exactly high currently - rebounding ball well though 9rpg

If you watched any Cleveland games last season we would have understood how our starting five was set and how much injuries effected it. Only two players from our starting five, Gee and Thompson played all 82 games last season. Varejoe only played 25 games and Irving and Waiters missed chunks of time, leaving our bench to play a lot of starters minutes and leaving them to do a lot of heavy work.

I'm not making up excuses, I'm just stating facts on why he has gotten off to a rough start.

So if Varejoe was injured so much why not draft a player that can slot right into his postion. Why not draft Noel and trade for Holiday.

What happened to you guys winning a ring before LeBron? Cavs front office is dodgy. You say they are making good moves now, why not do that why they had the best player in the world?

The guy they took with the first pick was a horrible decision, if you weren't such a big fan you'd agree

Because we want playoffs this season so why draft Noel who's coming back from an ACL? That you just say why not draft Noel and trade for Holiday? Why in the world would we trade for Holiday when we already have Kyrie?

We didn't make the best moves when we had LeBron but the front office was different. We had Danny Ferry and the season LeBron left we brought in Chris Grant. So how's it dodgy? Can't compare it because two different guys were running the team.

Four games in and your saying it was a horrible decision...smh. Give the kid some time.

Compare that to the bulls though - make the eastern semis.
Rose out all season.
Noah, hinrich, taj all missed 20+ games each.
Only two players on the entire roster played all 82 (butler, Nate-not starters)

I'll say what's said before to be a lottery team, there some upgrades needed

The ONLY reason I'm saying that it was a horrible pick is because they used it for a bench player. Why trade for Holiday if you have Kyrie you ask? Maybe so he can sit on the bench as you're happy to take bench player. At least Holiday is a proven NBA player and you still would have gotten a top 10 pick.

Honestly dude take your Cavs blinders off for just one second (I admire your love/dedication to the team) and just see things for what they are.

You want to be a sports writer right? If this was another team in the same situation with the same type of players would you be saying the same things?

Im a massive Knicks fan but I'd be the first to point out all the stupid moves we have made over the years.

@ESPNNBA: RT @IanBegley: #Knicks say Tyson Chandler is expected to be out 4-6 weeks with a non-displaced fracture of the right fibula.

Damn that sucks! He is my starting C in fantasy also. I hope the Knicks put Amare at the C, that's were he has played his best while at the Knicks

C'mon now you can't possible compare the Bulls, one of the leagues best bench units to Cleveland's, one of the worst bench units (from last season)

I understand what your saying by its horrible because he's a bench player but I just think it's too early judge if it's a horrible pick yet. What if Bennett turns out to become a 12-15 point scorer off the bench and becomes one of the best sixth man and rookies in the league. On the flip side he could become trash off the bench, then I'll say it was a horrible pick but that will only be decided at the end or near the end of the season

I would be saying the same things about other players/teams. Take Alex Len (even though his only played two games) I'm not calling him a horrible pick. In 2 games his averaged 10min a game and 2.5 ppg and 1.5 rpg. So I'm not saying his a horrible pick. This is the one thing I hate about opening week, over reactions. People overreact so much to opening week, it's amazing.

And plus Bennett has played better defensively and been a better rebounder then mike brown expected, he said it in an interview. The shooting slump unfortunately has shadowed his defensive play and rebounding.

Bench players don't get you to the semi finals. (yes they have an impact, but you are talking up your "locked" starters like they are the dream team).

As has been said if your bench is so weak wouldn't you draft someone who is potentially an upgrade in the starters and bench that player and it doesn't have to be right away.
Eg. Draft oladipo have him being the spark off the bench until all start break or earlier then replace waiters or Clark in the starting line up.

As I said I hope Bennett lives up to his potential. It is only 4 games but at the end of the day there is no excuse for any NBA player, let alone a number one pick, going 0-15 and 2-4 from the line.

I'm not talking them up like they're the dream team I'm just saying how we have a set starting five not only for this season but for the future, so we didn't need to draft a starter. We attempted to trade the pick right up until draft day but we didn't get an offer we liked so we drafted the best player available according to Chris Grant and it just happens that it is Bennett and his best role for the team is coming off the bench. Now he could break into the starting line up due to an injury or something like that. He could develop into a 3 and take over Clarke's starting spot. We just don't know yet. Remember all the people saying TT was a bust after his rookie season? Now look at him, one of the most improved players in the league. He took a while to adjust and Bennett May be on the same road. Waiters and Thompson were both surprise picks by Cleveland and both have turned out well. Bennett was a surprise pick so I have faith Chris Grant made the right pick
