Worst card 'investment' you ever made.

Probably one of my worst was my Penny UD SE Die Cut.

Paid close to $300 for it when the cards were released.....I think I sold it for about $100 and these days it can be had fairly cheaply.

I had a friend who traded a 92-93 Fleer Jordan Allstar and another nice MJ for a box of Classic 4 Sports......pulled a Bill Curley auto.....lets just say the card ride home was very subdued.

Cheers
Matt

I remember the hype in 1994 about the 1993/94 SE die cut set, my friend wouldn't even take $200 Aussie for the Penny card, it was the inserts of that decade, one price guide not beckett had it for about $350 Aussie at one stage.

Now you can pick up the whole west and east for about $150 to $200 US, has times has change, I hope exquisite gold parallels RCs won't be like this in 5 or 10 years time, Im guess some will come down in price when a player been in the league but Im guess a exquisite peaks when a player is playing well at 26 to 30 unless your Wade, Howard or Lebron, you always going to have keen buyers for future hall of famers.

Montross is Class of 94 so His RC Refractors is from 1994-95 Finest. =)
(I think you would miss that year...)

http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn200/nbacardDOTnet/Class of 1994/94-09 Eric Montross/--17.jpg

And you are right for your overpaying but not fully.

I'm not sure you saw 1994-95 collector's choice and finest box break.

Odds of Finest Ref is 1: 12 it means you can pull 2 ref from 1 box.

I saw as my eyes at that time then 2 poor(Worse than montross !!)refractors came out..yuk!

At that time Box price was around 400USD Per Box.
(He even couldn't pull MJ base card)

For Collector's choice, it would be the same. You can't ge Montross Gold sig even you 1 box break..

And at least you liked Montross..right?=)

Yeah wrong year, typo..

But with the amount of players in the set and players had multiple cards in the collectors choice set for eg the odds your box contained the card you wanted were huge. Also when people busted PACKS not boxes at the time like they do now that made it harder to pull. Especially here in OZ with the amount that was busted we were lucky to get what we got at the time.

Same with the refrcators and that set even at two a box. Then add first day issues and you get the same story. Its no wonder we overpaid for cards as none of us had the vision of an eBay and a worldwide online card market giving us access to all the great cards. Cards are't worth less now, we just paid the price for the supply thats all. Once the supply was there REGARDLESS of the rarity of the card the prices plummeted.

/99 might not seem rare now but when there are only two in my country and I can't get to the Sunday market in another city at a particular weekend and see the card it might as be a 1/1  No way I'm going to fly to the US in search of $40 card and without the net that was the only option pre internet.

In a way the card companies didn't ruin our investments, the world trade online did.

If you paid $40 for a 1/1 RC of a player you collect NOW thats still not bad. Especially $40 Au... And as in my example above my cards felt like 1/1s at the time and hence the price paid for them. If it wasn't for the online world I would maybe have had a more expensive card if Montross kicked on, trouble is my only avenue to sell/trade it in would of been a choice of 3 card shops, market stalls and Dr.C/Chaddy42 who wouldn't want it anyway regardless of value LOL

The investment I made in 91/92 upperdeck. traded some late 80's fleer. I think I ended up throwing them out. Thanks to upperdeck for making a million cases.

Its been up and down. Back in the early days of the hobby here it booked pretty high by memory(BV meant something), came down a little after that and now the better condition ones are on the up in just the last 3 or so years. Maybe a $300US swing at times.

Maybe someone with a beckett from the early 90s can answer a bit better bout the BV at the time. I think its just a card that doesn't get much activity as it goes into sets or pcs and already being rare, iconic and condition sensitive helps it a lot. Who knows. There may be a rush of deceased estate sales in 30 years or there abouts when some of the older collectors that typify the vintage hobby pass away....

Looking back on a Beckett from 99-00, when the Vince carter SP rookie had bv of $1000, the 86 jordan rookie was $1600 and the 1957-58 topps Bill russell was $1200.
Going back even further to 89-90, the Jordan rookie was $350 and the Bill russel was $2000.

Not sure how much the BV of the Bill russell is now though.

Anybody else wanna know the BV on card from 99-00 and 89-90?

Today 2009 BV

Bill Russell RC - $1100
Michael Jordan Fleer RC - $600

Today cards are graded and have different values, These cards are base on raw NrMint to Mint card and actually prices are base on auction sales.

Besides your topic..

I saw VC SP Authentic was sold around 600$ USD around 2000(in my country.)

And I heard SPx Spectrum # / 25 was sold around 7,500$ at peak. lol

I heard Darius Miles SPx BGS 9.5(not spectrum yes base RC) was sold around 12,000$ at peak.

I saw Kobe Chrome was sold around 500 USD at peak.
(People expected Kobe Chrome would go to 750$ BV lol)

I saw Antawn Jamison Triple Color Jersey was sold around 500 USD(2002?) and VC Jersey was sold around 1500 USD at peak.

1994-95 Finest Refractor Michael Jordan was 1,350 USD BV at peak but now we can get that card around 100 USD DLVD

Jason Richardson Black Chrome Refractors was sold around 500USD but we can get that card around 70-80 DLVD.

Even some kinds(not ud but fleer) of 1999-00 Jersey was sold around 100USD now we can get those 8-10USD DLVD if we are lucky. Even If we are really crazy, 20USD DLVD.

LBJ EXq was sold 13,000$(?) at peak. before 2-3 month it was sold around 6,500$.
(There are one or two funny guy in my country. That guy insists LBJ EXQ is still really really cheap so EXQ has to be skyrocketing..lol)

I don't know how much was Melo SPx Spectrum but now a days it was sold 260USD DLVD.
(my old beckett magazine,2007. SPx RC is 250$)

I saw only a few crazy nice investment and most of them became worse.

T-MAC Chrome Ref
50(BV. Mercer was 80 lol) -> 200? 300?(SV) -> 50(not BV SV)

I know one funny guy(in my country) lost around 10K USD(as BV) within 2 month.

He collected 1997-98 UD Jersey and multi, 1998-99 UD Jersey and multi, 1997-98 Skybox Auto CM, 1999-00 Skybox CM Auto.1996-97 EX2000 Credential set, 1996-97 Flair Showcase Legacy Set etc.

For example Keith Van Horn CM was 1280$(?) at peak but now 40$.
(Contrary, Sheed CM was 300$ but now BV is 450$ and SV is 750-800$)

I know many collapsed case...But this is hobby...

I have recommended to someone has asked me.

"If you want to investment something, go to stock, bond ,commodity or real estate market. This is only hobby for fun"

yeah I remember when the upper deck used game jerseys first came out, huge BV, low odds of pulling. Pretty glad I never splurged and got myself one.

My Grant Hill Collection from the 90's.

I paid $90 for a Classic Printer's Proof and a 96 Molten Metal Insert, Paid $120for a Collector's Choice Gold RC. :(

It wasnt all that bad coz when I started getting back into the hobby in 02-03, I bought a lot of Grant Hill cards when he was injured while with the Magic and his cards were so cheap. Then I sold them alltogether when he started palying again and got more than what I paid for even those ones from the 90's.

Odds -> 1:2,500

Alonzo Mourning, Tim Hardaway : 250$ BV <-- I can remember this.

and really really really hard to find or get.

1 year ago, I bought glenn robinson jersey as 10$ then sold as 10$(as the same price..to move on) lol

not bad but overpaying..Molten Metal is not easy to get or find..It is still like that...
(If it was 1996-97 Molten Metal, only overpaying..If it was 1995-96 Molten metal..nearly scam..printer's proof is the same.
Even it was at peak, price would not be like that..Proof would be around 1,500 Prints..if I were not wrong...)

I got a Grant Hill collectors choice gold for $4 bit of a bargain I reckon

Bought some Michael Jordan insert for $20 - or my parents did, late 1990s when I loved basketball cards. I went to "cardzone" I think it was called in Hornsby and bought commons which they sold each for like 50 cents (yeah these places are crazy in price, like the one in Midcity in the CBD) and they wanted to buy me a nice one so bought me this MJ for $20 turned out to be an insert but I looked it up a year or two back BV was like $10 or something.

I ended up getting ripped off by an older kid who traded me another MJ and a few other cards for it, back then I didn't understand pricing so I thought wow 1 MJ for another plus other players must be a bargain.

Needless to say my parents weren't too happy that $20 card had gone to some punk who ripped me off I was at least 10 years younger than him..

Yeah lucky it wasn't a more expensive Jordan Insert, $20 isn't too bad, I guess. if that was your worst experience I think I rather have your luck with cards =D>

Well I never purchase high-end products and try to go easy mate. For me it's a hobby before it's an investment or addiction. I love it but I'm not going to go crazy on it.

Yeah I know what you mean, just can't go out and buy everything, I really only try and collect high end rookies and trying to buy older rookie cards when the dollar looks decent again. I like to collect other things like old mint condition G1 transformer toys and old video game consoles in new condition but it gets hard having serveral hobbies and you just buy what you can I guess.

i think my worst investment is every card in my photobucket!!!

i did once trade an upper deck latrell sprewell all rookie team insert card for a dominque wilkins highlights subset card, at the time i think spree was booking at $15 and the nique was $0.50!!! not like i cared though cos i completed the skylights subset from upperdeck (i still think UD should have made that into an insert set!)

I guess my worst investment took place on this forum, maybe 2-3 years ago.
Just got back in collecting after a 10 year hiatus. Was looking for a Isiah Thomas auto to invest in as he was (and still is) my fav player since my younger days. What I failed to realise was that after 10 years, autos were fast becoming common cards. Was approached by someone on this forum and paid way over the top premium price for an Ulitmate auto. Could have saved more than 50 bucks if I were to buy it from Ebay.

If you guys are curious, I come to realise this bloke was not the most popular person here, and I said 'was' because he has since been banished from this community.

Oh well, at least it is a really beautiful card with nice, clear on card auto.

Sorry to hear that mate. The mods/admin do a great job of "weeding" out the few bad guys amongst the mjority who do the right thing.

That is undoubtedly true. I had done quite a few deals with people here and that was the only bad one. Much rather to deal here than ebay nowadays.

G'day guys and gals,
I'm Juddcollector and I'm new to the forum. I just thought that I should come in and introduce myself and tell you of my worst "investment" (or should I say move). I was about 13 or 14 and had recently pulled a 92/93 Upper Deck Shaq RC and at that time everyone was bringing their cards to school and showing off so I decided to (smartly#-o) bring my cards to school and as the day went on I noticed that someone had nicked my Shaq RC! I tried to find out who but with the amount of people who had looked at my cards that day I was never going to find it. Also my next worst investment was collecting Mitch Richmond cards.

Well the member who ripped you off and is now banned is well known for over pricing his cards! At least you'll never have to worry about that again!
