Worst card 'investment' you ever made.

This has come up in another thread and we are all guilty of buying up at times in cards we assume will rise in value..

Whats your worst splurge on a card only for the player to fall off the face of the earth and the card now sell for a pittance of what you paid for it?

I have a kick ass Eirc Montross collection LOL

I'd say one that fits the bill for me is either his RC Gold Sig collectors choice or his 93 finest RC refractor. Both the pinacle of his RC cards and both paid around the $40-50 range for each. A top NCCA player, all rookie team player with a retiring center giving up his starting C spot.....

Not that I was looking to flip it later on but before the internet, before eBay, before forums etc etc you only had one chance to pick up such cards.......or so you thought.

As for cards I bought to flip I've been pretty lucky. My investment I was happy to lose $10 or so on but now its worth $1

Anyone bought up a player, set etc with the intention of flipping it later on or watching it grow in value only to see it worth a buck or so???

Paid close to $300 for it when the cards were released.....I think I sold it for about $100 and these days it can be had fairly cheaply.

I had a friend who traded a 92-93 Fleer Jordan Allstar and another nice MJ for a box of Classic 4 Sports......pulled a Bill Curley auto.....lets just say the card ride home was very subdued.

anything UD black.. man those cards dropped like 60% in value

I've got a few JRich cards which I paid quite abit for

Easily my worst card investment was in 1992, as a 12 year old, I paid $100 for Fleer Patrick Ewing Career achievement awards card. I basically cleaned out my account cos I idolised him, only too see it in a Beckett mag around four days later with a BV of $10. Then around a year later I traded it for three or four base Mitch Richmond cards, cos he was who I was collecting.......................................................good times

A 93-94 olajuwon beam team card, paid $40, can now be bought for $1. Still has sentimentle value to me.

On the flip side, bought a smush parker finest rc auto for $5, flipped it for $50 when he was hot. They can't even be sold now for $00.50!!!!

yeah i bought a damon stoudamire rc back in the day for like $30 haha..

I'll be shattered if in 30 years time no one cares about Bill Russell and his RC drops. I may move that card in that time for a good price if I need a new recliner at the time.

What's the track record on that card so far? Has it held it's value or increased in value?

Its been up and down. Back in the early days of the hobby here it booked pretty high by memory(BV meant something), came down a little after that and now the better condition ones are on the up in just the last 3 or so years. Maybe a $300US swing at times.

Maybe someone with a beckett from the early 90s can answer a bit better bout the BV at the time. I think its just a card that doesn't get much activity as it goes into sets or pcs and already being rare, iconic and condition sensitive helps it a lot. Who knows. There may be a rush of deceased estate sales in 30 years or there abouts when some of the older collectors that typify the vintage hobby pass away....

Back when I was a teenager I spend way too much money buying a 1993/94 Skybox series 1 about at least $100 Aussie, then I swap it for a Grant hill RC 1994/95 skybox GH1 card, both back then was worth $15 US in the BV now the Grant Hill about $8 US but its a sweet looking card and looks mint as.

Today I think buying a case of 2008/09 Premier was not happy with what I got and to pay $3300 Aussie and getting back $750 Aussie great buy not I guess we all do lose out on buying boxes tho, but fun break anyway

Im totally thinking getting Exquisite or not, you know $1650 delivered (about $2300 Aussie) with the Aussie dollar against US, is it worth the gamble? really thinking about it.

Take that $2300 AUD ($1600 US) and you will be able to buy almost any card you want when the cards hit ebay....that amount would buy you 5 really nice cards an an empty box....

Yeah thanks guys, thats what I was thinking too, the only reason that I would really want to buy a case is because Derrick Rose RC Exquisite (Gold) Parallel 1/1 is out there but its a bit of a risk, I'm not sure if I want a exquisite /99 because its not as limited as like the 08/09 Premier /15 of Derrick Rose RC and the patches look great on those cards. Im not sure if UD black or UD Ultimate will make anything less than a /15 series or anything more than 1/1, thanks

Worst investment ever: bought a bunch of 'high' end Ndudi Ebi cards. Lucky he wasn't too expensive but still was a kick in the nuts when he got waived (considering he went like 20 and 12 in the only game they played him!). Oh well, he's playing Euroball now, only 24 still but don't think he's any hope of getting back to the NBA.

If UD box is like that great investment, why Warren Buffet kinds people doesn't buy those?
(I saw one funny guy undestand EXQ box as investment in my country...)

If UD sells box as cheaper price than box materials, how we can call UD as company? If then we would call UD as "Charity Union".


- If you are Rich Guy or want to gamble for fun, Box breaking would be nice.

- If you are not, don't buy box,case and whaterver.
=>Unless you are but you would buy..there is much possiblitiy your blood pressure would be double than now.

Montross is Class of 94 so His RC Refractors is from 1994-95 Finest. =)
(I think you would miss that year...)

And you are right for your overpaying but not fully.

I'm not sure you saw 1994-95 collector's choice and finest box break.


Odds of Finest Ref is 1: 12 it means you can pull 2 ref from 1 box.

I saw as my eyes at that time then 2 poor(Worse than montross !!)refractors came out..yuk!

At that time Box price was around 400USD Per Box.
(He even couldn't pull MJ base card)

For Collector's choice, it would be the same. You can't ge Montross Gold sig even you 1 box break..

And at least you liked Montross..right?=)

Yah it was not weird at that time.

Penny was the second player after MJ.

Like above box break, Upperdeck SE is also really tough.

It is really nice for old fan, now. Because even someone is one of the craziest , Penny SE Allstar would not be reach to 40 USD DLVD.

If you bought only a few cards it would not be bad..

But if you bought too much and expensive cards like topps black chrome ref. you would be damaged too much..Hope not like that..=)

2007-08 UD Black was 200 USD DLVD per box? I can't remember exact price though.

If that price was like that and you have one autograph ,Think like this.


I bought one box then I pulled that card.

I have liked Kevin Garnett since his rookie season.

At least, most of people liked Jerry Stack or Joe Smith and a few people liked McDyess. No one liked KG in my country....

(Frankly speaking class of 2001 #1,#2,#3 is worst HS ever at Draft IMO)
