I was chatting to a mate and tried to tell me that one player was better than another and I STRONGLY disagreed.

So I put it to the wisest basketball community I know, you guys.

Now, WITHOUT doing any research as to who is who. Which of these 2 players would you rather. These are these players CURRENT career stats.

Mystery Player A - Kobe Bryant
25.5ppg - 5.3rpg - 4.7apg - 0.5bpg - 1.5spg

Mystery Player B - Allen Iverson
26.7ppg - 3.7rpg - 6.2apg - 0.2bpg - 2.2spg

Pretty similar stats for STRONGLY disagreeing. Who cares really... i mean stats dont show defensive ability at all besides steals and blocks. there is more to the game than numbers.

Spot on stats mean nothing. I'm guessing player a is Kobe so I'll take player a. Clutch
Ahh see that's what I didn't want... You worked out player A was Kobe and just went with that because it was Kobe.

If stats mean nothing how can we evaluate how good a player is?

You can't, it's a bit of a silly question really. Who is player b?? It's not Lebron, Durant or Anthony.
Maybe derick rose??

I just read what I wrote and it makes no sense. A player doesn't have to have good stats to be good. You can't pick someone purely on numbers. Dwight Howard probably has better career numbers in blocks and rebounds than Duncan but you gonna pick Howard first because his numbers might be better??

Ok, I see where you're coming from. I see my original post might be a little mis-guided with out people knowing both players.

I just have a feeling that once people know who the second player is they will all go for Kobe due to Career Achievements which is not what my argument was about. I was talking better player, ignoring all career achievements. As Kobe had a hell of a lot more help than the second player.

picking who is a better player is an argument that can never be won, you beat someone with stats and they revert to hardware, you beat them with the players will to win and they revert to clutchness, its on going, with that being said i picked player b i think any player who is averaging more then 25 points and more then 6 assists and more then 2 steals is a well rounded player
