I have been a staunch defender of Select up until now - it really seems as though the monoply of the market has created a lazy, unimaginative, arrogant and dismissive environment, from which the only improvement will come from actual marketplace competition.
I would be very interested to see what Consumer Affairs would have to say if they were told that a product was advertised as a "limited edition of 50" and yet the company refuses to release #1 and has in fact replied to a question on their own Facebook page with "we keep whatever number we like".
it was a year or more ago, there was "Q & A" on their Facebook page with AFL & NRL collectors.
From 8th August 2012:
Troy Douglas: why do select keep all cards numbered #1 rather than another number or just produce a none numbered card for company purpose eg a numbered #0 card?

Troy Douglas: Select Australia is my question to hard to answer

Select Australia: Select can keep any number we choose

I have also been thinking of moving on to memorabilia the last couple of years too, Select won't up their game so I'll find another form of collectingI'm looking at collecting at other memorabilia whilst occasionally picking up the odd card here and there. Select are the pits and have got to be the most amateur and unimaginative card company worldwide.
Guernseys, framed items etc. For $500, I might as well look at either paying off my AFL/EFC membership a year early and/or sponsoring an EFC player
How quick we forget........
Select are the only AU card company to organise "FREE", yes "FREE" signing sessions + a free card at their costs. I'm taking about the Ambassador signature cards from 06 and 07 (from memory) where Select actually paid for the player to spend an 1 at a store and print up cards to be signed at Card zone and AFL stores. I dont see the NRL collectors getting any freebies from ESP.
Fair call Owen, l didn't know ESP were good enough to do this. Well done to ESP.I will pull you up there Ming.
I help run a card show in Newcastle. We asked Select for some support - nothing special - just asked for some base cards that we could give out to kids that came through the door. Robbie told us where to go. We dont support the secondary market is what we were told.
We approach ESP. We get 2 free cases to give out on the door and give away through the day as prizes. The head of ESP also showed up for the day and was happy to chat to collectors. They do similar things with most NSW and QLD shows.
And seriously - promo cards!?!?! Come on. I would give them up in a second for a company with some imagination.

I am still baffled as to why people still spend their hard earned money on these inferior goods made by these card companies.
I respect your opinion Ming, you are a fantastic guy to have on the forums.
