Select Tri-Star Signature series!

Glad to see im not the only one angry with select but appears we are just faceless nobodies to them and always will be. shame as this hobby has si much potential but is just run by an arrogant, selfish and ignorant Few. If anyone is game enough to try and bring them down I will support 100% hahaha

What is so disappointing about the way Select treat their customers, is the amazing opportunity that they have to actually be great.

They have the monopoly on AFL collectable cards, they have a presence on Twitter and Facebook, they are small enough to provide personal service and they have this fantastic chance to speak to collectors, ask for feedback, delve into the community and have a physical presence.

They however, do nothing of the sort.

Disappointing select. Disappointing. I'm used to it though. Prime was the first year I didn't buy any boxes or packs of a second series and this trend is going to continue unless things change.

I too am no longer going to be buying series 2. For 2 reasons, in protest that they keep treating collectors like idiots and giving us so little, and the second reason is their ideas and design arnt really giving me any reason to spend my hard earned. To buy 2-3 boxes of series 2 which is my usual amount, it will set me back between $300-$450 plus postage, to be honest i can think of better things to be spending my money on. I too have been a critic of Select for years, but im now tipped over the edge and have better places to spend my money. I will buy the Hawks draft sig each year but only off sellers on these sites, and maybe some sig redemptions if Hawks get any but thats it. Im just over their crap to be honest. The fact they never answer a question on facebook says it all really, they couldnt care less because their still making money, thats piss poor with the amount of opportunity they have here in Oz.
Only 2 things will get me back
1 Being if the AFL either give the licence to someone else of release a dual licence
2 Being if Select seriously lift their game.
I think hell will freeze over before the second one happens.
The only way things will change is if we make a stand and it hits their bottom line because that seems to be the only thing their interested in.

Yeah I was just thinking of skipping buying boxes and just buying all the cards later. Only possible way I see of making even the slightest of stands as at least they lose a sale! May be a bit more expensive but I will cop that if it meens Im not directly fubding s company like select who dont have the courtesy to even try and interact or communicatw with customers. I meen I sent them 3 emails when future force came out asking which qld newsagents would stock it and even then they couldnt be bothered giving me a proper replu!!! And it was in their best interest too reply

I'm looking at collecting at other memorabilia whilst occasionally picking up the odd card here and there. Select are the pits and have got to be the most amateur and unimaginative card company worldwide.

Guernseys, framed items etc. For $500, I might as well look at either paying off my AFL/EFC membership a year early and/or sponsoring an EFC player ;)

I have been a staunch defender of Select up until now - it really seems as though the monoply of the market has created a lazy, unimaginative, arrogant and dismissive environment, from which the only improvement will come from actual marketplace competition.

I would be very interested to see what Consumer Affairs would have to say if they were told that a product was advertised as a "limited edition of 50" and yet the company refuses to release #1 and has in fact replied to a question on their own Facebook page with "we keep whatever number we like".

Where was this response?

it was a year or more ago, there was "Q & A" on their Facebook page with AFL & NRL collectors.

From 8th August 2012:

Troy Douglas: why do select keep all cards numbered #1 rather than another number or just produce a none numbered card for company purpose eg a numbered #0 card?
August 8, 2012 at 1:37pm

Troy Douglas: Select Australia is my question to hard to answer
August 8, 2012 at 1:48pm

Select Australia: Select can keep any number we choose

Yeah i fell off my chair when i read that. So arrogant.

Mike asked them a question just recently on their facebook page as to when the tri star was made, this guy has probably spent more on cards than most of us combined and they still ignored him. What chance to do we have?

You could excuse them for perhaps missing his question but in typical Select fashion they responded to other questions, just not Mikes.

I have also been thinking of moving on to memorabilia the last couple of years too, Select won't up their game so I'll find another form of collecting

How quick we forget........

Select are the only AU card company to organise "FREE", yes "FREE" signing sessions + a free card at their costs. I'm taking about the Ambassador signature cards from 06 and 07 (from memory) where Select actually paid for the player to spend an 1 at a store and print up cards to be signed at Card zone and AFL stores. I dont see the NRL collectors getting any freebies from ESP.
Promo cards.......... are always given out, not every card company gives out promo cards prior to release.

There was also a Q&A from Grant Copley himself. Yes, Select have not appeared at any shows for a few years but every time (or close to ever time) a collector complains about getting short changed / missing ratio inserts in there box, select have always come to the party and sent out replacement cards.

Yes, they can improve need on their ideas but lets not make out its a dead end street. Its far from it.

Bag Select all you want but l for one hope they are around for a long time.

I will pull you up there Ming.

I help run a card show in Newcastle. We asked Select for some support - nothing special - just asked for some base cards that we could give out to kids that came through the door. Robbie told us where to go. We dont support the secondary market is what we were told.

We approach ESP. We get 2 free cases to give out on the door and give away through the day as prizes. The head of ESP also showed up for the day and was happy to chat to collectors. They do similar things with most NSW and QLD shows.

And seriously - promo cards!?!?! Come on. I would give them up in a second for a company with some imagination.

Fair call Owen, l didn't know ESP were good enough to do this. Well done to ESP.

I respect your opinion Ming, you are a fantastic guy to have on the forums. But like Owen said, i would give up the once off signing of promo cards for a company who took a risk and was leading edge when it comes to design and initiative. Me being in Tassie have zero interest in the one off player signings as i would never be able to make one anyway. Better cards is what i want. In 20 years Select have been doing producing cards how many of these player signings have they held? Only 1 or 2 max. To me that doesnt make up for lack of respect for the people collecting their product.

The only reason ESP started to attend these shows and started spending more time interacting with various collecting forums/ selling sites was due to their poor sales of their first release. It was on sound advice that they received about how to generate more sales that they soon realised that interacting with the collectors will not only help their image but also increase their sales. So poor sales made these guys suddenly realise that the people (collectors) who buy these may know what they like to buy .

Yes, well done to them for realising that by ignoring their customers (collectors) and what they like to buy will not be profitable, so they started to interact more. Remember when they first started off and didn't give a rats ass about this website nor any other site or card show? I understand majority of you will stick up for them as they provide 'freebies' and what not, but as a collector you must admit it was poor form and rude to ignore so many people, only to start becoming friendly due to the lack of sales.

Next year, ESP, plan on making game used cards and will be asking a premium price accordingly for this, so much for taking care of the collector. Yes, I understand that the productions costs may be higher then usual when it comes to these GU cards, however, I have a feeling that they will try and 'cash in' on the lack of GU cards in the Aus market.

Regardless, be it Select or ESP, all they care about is making $$$ and it is the poor collector that suffers. I am still baffled as to why people still spend their hard earned money on these inferior goods made by these card companies. I just find Australian card companies to be cashing in on collectors, whilst providing nothing that is new or innovative.
