Official 2013-14 NBA Regular Season Thread - SPOILERS!

How are you feeling physically? Alex Len: I'm feeling good. I've started playing. I've been playing for two days already, playing pick-up games. My ankles are feeling good and I'm ready for training camp so I'm looking forward to it. Q: Are you back to 100% and totally cleared to play? Alex Len: Not 100% yet. When I play pick-up games, I start every game but they pull me off to the side after a couple minutes because they don't want me to overdo it before the season, you know? I haven't played for about 5 months so I'm out of shape. Training camp is going to be a lot of running just to get in shape, get my wind back. Bright Side of the Sun

Amar'e Stoudemire's hectic summer didn't include much basketball but it did include yet another knee surgery, the Daily News has learned. According to a Knicks source, Stoudemire had an unreported surgical procedure in July to repair one of his ailing knees. The Knicks open camp on Tuesday and have yet to announce that Stoudemire has had a third knee operation in 12 months. The surgery was described as "clean up" and isn't considered major. Let's say Bryant returns to form. The Lakers' media day was filled with talk that the infusion of youth (from the likes of Nick Young, Wesley Johnson and Xavier Henry) and a full training camp to implement Mike D'Antoni's system can make up for the departures of Howard and Metta World Peace. "We may not be as talented at the top as like last year, but I think we've gotten younger," Steve Nash said. "I think we've gotten more athletic, we've got more shooters, we can space the floor, we can play the way Mike wants us to play. "Although you would look at it from the outside and it looks as though we've gone from being a favorite to a noncontender, we still have an opportunity to build a great team, find some chemistry and find a way to be really successful." Out of the league since Dec. 2009 due to a series of knee issues, the 7-foot center has been working at AmericanAirlines Arena for nearly two months. In an interview with the Sun Sentinel on the eve of camp, he stressed that patience remains prudent. "Really, for me, I'm happy being on the court and playing and getting back into the thick of basketball," he said at a promotional appearance at the offices of Shelling Orthodontics and Maye Pediatric Dentistry, an event which also served as a fundraiser for the Udonis Haslem Children's Foundation. "I bang a little bit, still taking it slow. I'm taking steps. So I do a little bit, do a little bit of up and down, but we're not trying to wear out the knee. We're trying to make sure I can do a little bit and the next day I can do something, too." South Florida Sun-Sentinel

"I'm working every day. I'm doing what I can," Oden said before signing hundreds of autographs. "And when Rey and Jay say I can go full go, that's when it's time." Haslem, before stepping in to sign his share of autographs, said Oden has offered a taste of the possibilities during the informal August and September workouts. "Oh man, it feels good to have a big man with that skill level," the veteran power forward said."You can't really teach that. That's very rare, to have a guy at that size who can do the things that he does. Hopefully he can stay healthy. South Florida Sun-Sentinel

The player is not ruling out opening night of the regular season, Bryant said. But the usual supreme confidence was tempered by the assessment that there is no way to know at this stage if Oct. 29 against the Clippers will happen. Pressed whether beginning 2013-13 on the court is realistic or overly optimistic, after it was originally feared that the torn Achilles’ ligament in the left leg suffered April 12, 2012 would keep him out closer to a year, the All-Star shooting guard said: “I don’t know. Probably a combination of both.” There is no clear answer, in other words. “It’s about being smart about it and pacing it the right way and just seeing how it does,” Bryant said. “It’s really just a strength thing now, just seeing how the explosiveness holds up and then how the recovery holds up after that. “The mental aspect of it, I really don’t concern myself too much with that. I can’t do anything about it if I’m going to hurt something, so I won’t waste my time really thinking about that. But I do need to get in shape. And I will get in shape. It doesn’t take me long to do that. I really work hard at it, and when I get back out there on the court, I’ll be good to go. I don’t think I’ve ever played a season where I was 100 percent. Seventy-eight is fine.” NBA.com

Well-traveled forward Renaldo Balkman, who played in multiple countries last year, signed a contract with the Dallas Mavericks. The team announced the deal Monday but did not reveal details of the agreement. The 29-year-old veteran began last season playing in the Philippines but was banned from the league due to an on-court outburst that began as a dispute with the refs but included Balkman pushing refs, coaches and teammates. Addressing the Boston press for the first time since the Celtics traded Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett this summer, the rehabbing Rajon Rondo didn’t seem all that bothered by their absence at Media Day. “It wasn’t difficult at all,” said Rondo. “I didn’t feel anything. I actually landed in L.A. the night of the draft, and I got about 45 text messages coming through my phone. I thought I was traded. You never know.” Instead, the Celtics had dealt Pierce and Garnett, the face and the soul of the franchise that drafted him. So, Rondo traded texts with his longtime teammates, even talked to them on the phone, but beyond that? “It’s part of the business,” added Rondo. “They’re not the first teammates that I’ve been close to who have been traded away — Perk [Kendrick Perkins], Tony Allen — so it’s part of the process.” WEEI.com

Brooklyn Nets point guard Deron Williams is no longer wearing a walking boot and said he'll take the court with the team on Tuesday for its first training-camp practice at Duke University in Durham, N.C. Williams sprained his right ankle and suffered a bone bruise during an offseason workout in Utah. He said Nets trainer Tim Walsh wants him to take it slow, but he expects to be healthy by the start of the regular season Oct. 30 against the Cleveland Cavaliers. ESPN.com

“It's a rebuilding year for them because Kobe has been hurting and he has a very devastating type of injury," Abdul-Jabbar said in a recorded interview airing Thursday between 6-7 a.m. ET on CBS Sports Radio's morning show with Tiki Barber, Brandon Tierney and Dana Jacobson. "I don't think he will be able to come back as quickly and completely as he would like. It's gonna be tough on the Lakers this year." CBSSports.com

So there's you, Eric Gordon and Jrue Holiday. It's a very poweful backcourt. How's that going to work? Tyereke Evans: That's a good question. I think we all understand the game, but at the end of the day, when the game is on the line, we have to create for each other, making it hard for teams to stop us. That's what we really have to work on. With us three on the court, we should be able to score at will. There's no way we shouldn't be putting the ball in the hole. With the talent we've got, that's the challenge for us, open the floor for each other. HoopsHype
