No issue with Moltzen's release from Tigers, says agent

Glenn Jackson

July 11, 2011

TIM MOLTZEN is likely to secure a controversial release from Wests Tigers today, four days after his signing was trumpeted by St George Illawarra - a move sparking a war of words between the 22-year-old's current club and his future one.
Moltzen's manager, Martin Tauber, will meet with Tigers chief executive Stephen Humphreys today over the utility back's future. He has already secured a verbal agreement from Humphreys that Moltzen will be released from the final year of his Tigers contract, enabling him to officially join the Dragons and potentially be a replacement for Darius Boyd at fullback.
Tauber spoke with Dragons chief executive Peter Doust and next year's coach Steve Price yesterday and assured them the Tigers would not stop the move. ''They're not going to stand in his way,'' Tauber said.

'There's no issue. The club [Wests Tigers] has been very good about it, and I'm meeting with the chief executive [today]. All being well, all the issues will be resolved and we'll move on with Tim. They gave us a verbal agreement.'' That verbal agreement was the catalyst for the peculiar chain of events of last Friday that have added to the strain on the Tigers, who are experiencing upheaval as a result of their decision to allow a number of players to leave the club.
Having secured a verbal agreement that Moltzen would join them, and following the Herald's revelation that they had targeted him, the Dragons publicly announced the signing on Friday.
That infuriated Humphreys, who released a statement of his own accusing the Dragons of being ''arrogant and disrespectful'' by prematurely announcing the signing on the day of the Tigers' clash with Parramatta. Moltzen's move will add to the loss of Bryce Gibbs and Andrew Fifita to Cronulla - and the continued speculation surrounding the possibility of Penrith securing Chris Heighington and Beau Ryan - which have come with the club courting Melbourne forward Adam Blair.
The Tigers are understood to be close to finalising Blair's signature, and are also expected to sign Parramatta centre Joel Reddy this week. Club officials have maintained they have also had to contend with pouring money into re-signing a number of youngsters, including prop Aaron Woods and Matt Groat.
Meanwhile, the Dragons are expected to be boosted by the return of centre Matt Cooper for the club's clash with Cronulla on Monday night. He has been sidelined since round 12 - against the Tigers - after breaking his hand and damaging both his eye socket and cheekbone.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing today: When Moltzen signed with the Dragons, Wests arked up about the TIMING of the announcement, but did not question AT ALL the legality of the signing! That suggests to me that Moltzen WAS at least given a verbal assurance that he'd be released. Now this stuff with Lui has popped up, the Tigers want to act like they never agreed to the release? Obviously all the release PAPERWORK wasn't filled out, but what happened to the days of "A deal is a deal"? And with most of next years best free-agents having already sorted out for next year, the salary cap room doesn't really help St George. Maybe a "swap" like the one between the Storm and Titans, where the Storm gave up a few young players to keep Turner could be arranged, but is there anyone young enough and good enough at the Tigers to represent value, that they'd actually give UP? Can't think of much myself...

I think what makes it worse for them as well, they released Jacob Miller (1/2back), to an English club before this Lui situation, this is what i have heard... So basically the stuufed up and are trying to pretend that Moltzen is still under contract....

MAAAAYBE Jason Schirnack or Ben Murdoch-Masila? As far as I remenber, Fifita's already signed elsewhere, Simon Dwyer won't be signing with anyone in a hurry, and not sure any other 2nd rower comes close to equal value for Moltzen. But I don't know a thing about the Tigers under 20's team, so maybe theres a hidden gem there?

The NRL have said that they only have one official contract registered for the 2012 season for Molzten and it is with the Tigers.

To be honest, I think thats bullshyte! Not your reporting of it, but the finding itself... I mean, why is this only being picked up now instead of 4 months ago when the Dragons "contract" was supposedly signed? Hell, if you can void contracts retrospectively, I expect the Dogs to be voiding Idris's contract with the Coast PRONTO!!! ;) lol!

Idris was off contract, Moltzen wasn't???

Tigers aren't voiding the Dragons contract, according to the NRL, his registered contract is with the Tigers so the Dragons one may as well be written on toilet paper. I think the person who deserves the biggest kick in the bum is whoever was responsible for finalising the Dragons contract and didn't follow through and get the official release.

It was a smartass comment by myself about Idris, thus the ;) ... But from what I read in the Brisbane papers, (the Courier and the Australian), it seemed he had binding contracts from BOTH teams... And it had been put out there clear as day, as far as I'm concerned, that Moltzen and a few other Tigers players were free to look elsewhere. Whats the point of looking elsewhere if you're still locked in? Thus the COMMON assumption by many INCLUDING Moltzen, that he was free to sign with who he liked. Not free to sign with who he liked, UNLESS the Tigers made a poor buisness decision or two...

You can't put all your money on a horse, and then when it comes out slowly from the barrier say you want a refund to put on another horse. If you wanted to wait for another horse, you should've put your money on THAT one instead!

I have heard today that Carney will most likely end up Cowboys. Will reunite with Henry and wants to be out of the spotlight.

He got a big offer from Souths but does not think he can stick to the restrictions (no drinking) that they want to put on his contract.

Funny you say that about him ending up at the Cows, coz I was chatting to the owner of a memorabilia shop in Brisbane last week, and he mentioned the same things: Re-uniting with Henry, and out of the spotlight. This fella also said NQ supposedly have around $100k either already freed up or that CAN easily be freed up... Still chips for a player of Carney's talent, but he seems to be down on big money offers anyway. Cronulla and Souths might have more cap room, but he'll likely get torn to shreds at both places if he's even seen outdoors at night in either place, under the assumption that "he MUST be on his way out for a piss-up!"

ok lets see, Dragons sign Moltzen, obviously his manager and Moltzen between them have been to all the meetings and for fact Moltzen meet with our new coach to talk about his role, Dragons were told that Moltzen had been given permission to look elsewhere even though he has a contract after a few meetings Moltzen agrees to join Dragons and sign' contract, with the understanding that he has been granted a release "unofficially" , media announcement, not once since the announcement have the tigers said anything...
C.Heinington was also told to elsewhere he agrees to join Panthers , Tigers say no as they know have learnt that Dwyers injury could see him sidelined for a few years or may never play again, all done within a week or so..
It's obvious as to why this has happened and if Moltzen wants to stay then stay...

well if he signed a contract then i would say we had him, maybe we can go after Gordon :) he wants to play fullback, but you have Coote in his way

The way it looks is you never had him to lose

Paul Kent from the tele is reporting that Des Hasler had a meeting tonight with the players at the team presentation......a lot of them left the meeting "filthy'

Phil Rothfield reported that there is a massive tip that Ricky Stuart may be looking the goods for Hasler's replacement.
