Hearing that Junior Paulo has signed with Canberra for three years (2017-2019) and may become available for 2016 depending on the salary cap dramas at Parra.

Also heard the Raiders have all but signed Joseph Tapine for 2017 and beyond from the Knights

If true both are excellent pick ups
yeah i heard the same about paulo aswell, i was hoping we would keep him but seems unlikely. I think parra will wait to see what the result of his court hearing is before making a decision on this year. As for the salary cap dramas it wasn't to do with last year or this year is from past years and the sad thing is the board could have avoided the four point deduction for this year but sharp refuses to agree with the nrl terms of having an election every year (to do with board members)

Disappointing for eels fans after a great result in the 9's.

When is Paulo due in court?

I was never a fan of clubs poaching others junior talent but it is just the nature of the business these days. If Canberra manage to snag Paulo for 2016 that will be a big and mobile front row rotation. Vaughan, Boyd , Paulo & FPN

he is due to appear in court sometime in april as he pled not guilty in november last year. he has a few charges to answer for but i think most were minor. yeah canberra would have a dangerous forward pack and with a few young guys coming through they can become quite dangerous

Raiders sign Joseph Tapine from Newcastle on 3 year deal commencing 2017. He looks the goods this kid, might even be released immediately for 2016

I heard that as well. Stuart is loading up with big, mobile back rowers to combat the new interchange rules

It will be interesting this year to see if big and mobile works. I would have thought with the interchange likely to go to 6 next year that "big motors" would be high on the agenda for coaches and recruitment managers.

Soliola / Pappa / Clydesdale / Fensom can play big minutes.

Lima / Vaughan / Boyd I'm not so sure on and Hodgson well I think he needs too this year so you don't have to carry a backup hooker.

I imagine the new pommy Whitehead can play big minutes, so we'll see if he's got the balance right.

Yeah it is a big risk, particularly with the $$$ being paid. Tapine has only played 20 games and has shown some potential but is not yet proven. I suppose his signing makes up for the loss of TPJ.

I think the Raiders will initially have a back up hooker on the bench, 2 back rowers and a prop. They will carry Kennedy because he is super fit and can play Centre, Whitehead, Boyd and either Clydesdale or Baptiste. Anyone of the starting back rowers will be able to shift up front if need be to cover that 4th prop

Heard on the radio this morning the Raiders have paid 1.5mil for 3 years (From 2017)
In the hope he gets released this year.
Seems a lot of dough for a guy with 20 games in a shit team under his belt.

Seems a lot of dough for a guy with 20 games in a s*** team under his belt.

That is what I thought also. I must admit I haven't seen much of him, Knights supporters seem a bit devastated and he has a few wraps. Hopefully it is not the Tupou to Sharks style signing again although Tapine has a lot less experience under his belt.

Time will tell. The recruitments of Austin, Soliola and Hodgson last season were easily some of the top in the NRL. Canberra already have a stacked backrow and while it seems they may have paid overs Tapine will still have to earn his spot.

Austin was fantastic (ish) for half a season - Interested to see if he has a full season in him.... But Sammy Williams was bloody good in the 9's and has been playing decent footy. Neither of them will start over Sezer I wouldn't imagine....

Austin will be a marked man for sure and I don't expect that big left foot step and dummy to be anywhere near as effective this season. In saying that his defence, particularly his goal line, first up contact and defensive reads improved hugely as did his short passing game. His support play was excellent as all good 6's should be and I think if he can continue to improve his kicking and short passing he will have a good year.

I like Sammy Williams and I think initially he will be the odd one out. I thought he was solid last year and not bad in the 9's but just goes missing a bit more than the other two. I suppose it is a nice problem having three NRL quality halves on your books. Which ever halves combo plays will benefit from both Hodgdon and Wighton having last season under their belts in the 'spine'.

This is the best Canberra roster I have seen in over a decade, lots of plodders moved on, plenty of depth in key positions but maybe a bit light on up front until Paulo arrives!

You have got to think that Canberra may be headed for Salary Cap issues.

Stuart played his part at the Eels... it may be a recurring theme...

I hope not! Like all clubs they claim they are fine until they get breached. If they get Tapine for 2016 my understanding is that he was on 120k at the Knights which is all Canberra will have to pay him.

Campo, Shillington & TLL were Canberra's 3 highest paid players when Stuart took over and all three have been offloaded without any ongoing payments so hopefully they are well under.

I think the concern is their seeming willingness to pay "overs" if we are to believe the money that had been speculated for Tapine and Junior Paulo - eventually, you'll end up in the pooh.

BJ and Sezer would not have come cheap, factor in numerous contract upgrades in addition, and you wonder where the money can come from.

We'd all like that endless packet of Tim Tams...

Time will tell I suppose. I think Canberra have Andrew Gee doing their books this year so that should work out fine...

Offloading both McCrone & Buttriss helped. I believe that combined they were 400k per season

Both Sezer and BJ are on less then $300k per yr. The Raiders have no salary cap problems as previously said Campo left who was taking a large chunk of the cap, Also Betty White and Shillo, TLT, Joel Edwards. Not to mention somebody called Milford who they were going to pay $1mil per yr. the thing with the Raiders is most of the team (the 25squad) is made up of locals or people who have come thru the Raiders System

I taught Blake Austin in primary school. Natural talent at all sports and running. My mate has been involved in the primary school NSW rugby league team on a management level since early 1980s. In his time he rates the three most gifted primary kids he saw play rugby league as Blake Austin, Michael Jennings and Ben Rogers.!
