Hockey NHL Discussion Thread (Spoilers)

With 4 meetings in 5 days you'd think they may have sorted it out by now. But after Tuesdays meeting broke off after two hours, with no further discussions planned, it looks like we're going to start losing regular season games, with the new season supposed to commence on October 11.

In more bad news for the NHLPA, Boogaard's parents are suing them for $9.8mil after they claim the NHLPA failed to help them claim the remaining salaries on Boogaard's contract:

Boogaard died on May 13, 2011, at the age of 28 from what doctors later determined to be an accidental combination of alcohol and oxycodone toxicity. His parents documented Boogaard’s addiction to painkillers and sleeping pills and compiled records of team doctors for the Minnesota Wild and Rangers prescribing thousands of pills to their son.

Believing these NHL teams were partly responsible for Boogaard’s death, his parents say that they approached the NHLPA and that the union promised to help them file a grievance to get the Rangers to pay out the remaining $4.875 million on their son’s salary.

But the lawsuit alleges the union failed to file the grievance by the required deadline, and now Boogaard’s parents are suing the NHLPA for the remaining $4.875 million on his contract, plus $5 million in punitive damages.

In a tense moment for the Rangers, their star recruit Rick Nash was injured playing for HC Davos in the Swiss league. Luckily it's just a bone bruise on his shoulder, with no structural damage.

Finally, in a move that may put a little pressure on the NHL, ESPN is working out a deal to broadcast and stream KHL games.

Few weeks ago columnists were saying that if the Winter Classic was cancelled you could kiss goodbye the 12-13 season.

Well, this weekend just gone the Winter Classic was cancelled.

However, columnists now talk of optimism at an agreement being reached, and if done soon then the Winter Classic can be rescheduled.

I'd like to believe them, I really would.

Apparently the new deadline to save the 12-13 season is mid-November.

Me and my bro starting following NHL when we were at school and they started showing NHL Power Week. I have been a Penguins fan since 1997 and my bro Redwings. I am always looking to add to my Pens collection but prefer to source cards locally where possible.

I have quite a few O-Pee-Chee NHL cards, for seasons 1984 and 1985 and some others, send a message if you want to buy some.

Leaf just announced Best of Hockey, anyone planning on breaking any?
I might grab a box, did some sketch cards for them.

Looks like ITG's History of Hockey, except with better cards.

But 2 cards is pretty slim, you'd hope every box is a winner... unlike History of Hockey.

The shortened season is a few days old and its been a rollercoaster of mixed emotions

Schneider's first game as Vancouver's #1 goalie was horrible, letting through 5 goals from 14 shots before he was replaced by Luongo, who started the next game against the Oilers. While more competitive, the blew a 2-0 lead to end up in a shoot out where Lu let through 2 from 2, handing the game to Edmonton.

So once again the media is rife with articles over the supposed goalie controversy in Vancouver. Not too bothered myself. Would rather wins, but only 2 games in its way to early to be making judgment calls. Schneider posted a .914 save percentage in 8 games playing in the National League A (Switzerland) which isn't all that impressive compared to his previous NHL numbers, which could explain his poor performance in game 1. He starts tomorrow against Calgary, a home game where they are still bookie favourites, so hopefully he puts in a better showing to shut the wags up.

Despite Vancouver's woes, I've been cleaning up on Sharks games. :D Against both Calgary and Edmonton they were paying $3+ with a -1.5 handicap and they streamrolled them both. Could be the dark horse of the season.

Speaking of dark horses, defending cup champs LA aren't fairing too well, also dropping their first two and currently sitting plumb last in the Western Conference.
