Is Gold Standard the biggest ripoff of recent times?

funnily enough i agree to both sides of the story...but at the end of the day this has all come about because panini have the sole license of the NBA. it doesnt matter if GOLD standard was 150 per box, you still wouldnt make the money back because then the overall "value" of the cards decreases. the higher the value of the box the higher the value of the card its been like that FOR EVER. the only time you're going to get $$$ back is when you hit something big like the solid golds or the bullion tags. busting boxes/packs has never been about the return on outlay, the only idiots who do that are guys who are forever buying busting selling but because they are idiots they continue to bust cases and for this i am grateful for without said idiots we wouldnt be buying anything on ebay. 90% of guys dont bust stuff because they want to make $$ they do it cos its fun because they may hit something or get their player. thats the reason you got out mate because it was no longer fun, u were tired of everything, nothing from panini will ever give you value for money...basketball cards are not an investment, they are not value for money never will be..we do this for the thrill of the chase and for the need to have every card of your player not because we're looking 4 years down the track to sell off....if guys are doing that then they should f*&*k off because we've seen what they're like and arent really wanted (rayme, JC et el)

I believe in geek language they refer to that as a... "wall of text"

I see that this is partly a 2 pronged problem

1) Would we look at it differently if Gold Standard had Lebron and Jordan in it? I'd say yes and then the chance of pulling a JOrdan Auto at $200 per box is well worth it.

2) Now 90% of people don't actually care about the cards. All they care about is the VALUE. How many times has the argument come out here, it's not worth it, you wouldn't even get your money back from the box etc. etc. Once upon a time it was all about busting to collect a set, you'd be stoked if you pulled a base card of your favourite player, let alone an insert.

Would you really spend $1000 on boxes of this just for base sets? Because other than a handful of scrub/older player autos and common GUs that's likely only what you're gonna get.
.
This is the problem though collectors have pushed the prices higher and higher, firstly because people are willing to pay for it and secondly because all everyone wants now is a "hit". If collectors buy a box without an auto/patch or hit of some kind we all whinge and complain like there is no tomorrow

I agree with this - when I opened my 93-94 Upper Deck I was delighted to pull heaps of base and subset cards of Jordan. But that's a $10-20 box, so to have the same kind of results from a $200 is a fair bit different...

I'd love to talk to any collector who wanted multiple redemptions.... :p
But this is where collectors are at fault again - we all want big hits, especially big hit rookie cards and of course they cannot make rookie cards until the draft, until they are signed to contracts etc etc. So having redemptions is the easiest way to give collectors what they want.

What about the autos for last year's draft class?

Yes and no. They certainly wouldn't have been a $10-20 box when they first came out and as I said it's the collectors who have caused this because we have pushed the prices higher and higher, firstly because people are willing to pay for it and secondly because all everyone wants now is a "hit". I thought about this when I made my post - including last years and of course any other redemption. We have to keep in mind signing autographs for card companies is not their main job - do we want them to shorten the season so they have more time to sign autos?

Is it costing panini $150 or what ever to make these cards? Is there actually double the amount of hits then say a prestige @ $100/box. Are the gold standard cards 50% higher in quality to say hoops? Are we paying higher prices because the sets are limited to say /299. Shiny cards are just marketing panini will put crazy prices on them just because they know people will buy them due to the shiny factor

I see everyone ones points, you break cases/boxes for fun over anything else, and it is a HOBBY, not the stock market....and you would have to be lucky to make your money back on a case...BUT....at the same time you want some value in the dollars you spend, and a guranteed case hit or three isnt too much to ask i dont think! and i have to agree with graeme on this, the content on gold standard this year is far down on last year, to me a product should evolve not go backwards as this product has, sure cards look cleaner and probably the design is a slight upgrade, but it just seems through all the cases being opened you arent getting anywhere as much as last year and the missing auto for a redemption seems a little unfair! with the time it takes panini now to redeem, with this flooded rookie stuff, it is going to take them yonks to get them out, unless they employ a shit load more staff to work in redemptions...which wont happen! i really think this product will come down very quickly, just gauging from peoples reaction here im sure the same will be said worldwide...
personally i would still buy last years product as a case, i have opened about three cases of the older gold and each case was pretty good, especially the last which had about 5 case hits...lol...but on a box by box basis, like preferred it makes a little more sense...still think this years will have to drop a bit more before i try a box or two...hype will drop off in a few weeks and it will be down around 150...
THIS IS MY OPINION...

Understand what you are saying if you are coming from the point of view where you are someone who busts to sell everything off. What about those people that pull that Kobe auto and are happy with what they got and not concerend about what its value is?

Its a hobby after all isnt it?

Whole heartedly agree with this! Everyone busts boxes for different reasons, some do it to trying to get the "case hit", I just love the rush of the unkown! Hoping I get a pc card, even if it is just a base card I haven't got yet!

Yeah I definitely agree the product is terrible especially with Panini's MAPP, though I might considering opening one after price drops

But I don't feel sorry at all for people who are busting a case of this expecting to make their money back, why look out for someone whos spending $2000 without doing the proper research?

Yes its expensive for most of us, but at the same time there is enough people in this world who have the extra money to burn for Panini to charge the high price... damn these people. lol
