Is Gold Standard the biggest ripoff of recent times?

What Graeme's saying is that sometimes even the 'case hit' doesn't make back the box, sure NRL Dynasty and Exquisite, you get I'm guessing an auto or say nice RC Auto Patch you're definitely going to make your money back. With Elite Black, a Kobe Auto, Durant Auto didn't even make back the box initially. They went for say $150 for the Kobes, and $250ish for the Durant and if my memory is correct the box came out at $250ish as well. For 11-12 Gold Standard, looking at the prices on eBay, not many cards at all have sold for more than $200 save a 1/1 Drose Auto patch, another Drose auto and an Anthony Davis Redemption. A Kobe auto gets you bit over half the box back. Isn't there something a bit wrong with that?

Ive seen so many people also referring to players that are legends of the NBA game as scrubs....not because of who they are, just that they wont be able to get back $200 for the auto. Its crazy!

Understand what you are saying if you are coming from the point of view where you are someone who busts to sell everything off. What about those people that pull that Kobe auto and are happy with what they got and not concerend about what its value is?

Its a hobby after all isnt it?

I don't like the redemption quantity in this product, it's ridiculously excessive. There are some very nice cards here and there from every product Panini releases. It comes down to the fact that it is impossible to please everyone with every release!

If you like the product or enjoy busting - buy a box or a case! If you don't, buy singles! Simple stuff.

Ive only bought 1 box recently (Past and Present) and can honestly say, that although i didnt hit anything big,
it was an enjoyable break and the 'content' value of the box is far better than most of the gold standard breaks ive seen.

Understand that when people buy boxes for the big payoff are gonna come away disappointed most of the time.
But we're not buying lotto tickets and for the collectors who just enjoys busting wax, it shouldnt be that risky.

I busted 3 boxes on Thursday, so i thought I jump in with my thoughts on the product.
Sure some people are going to think it's waste of money buying boxes/cases, but a lot of people enjoy busting boxes.
Now while I love busting boxes, as most people would have seen over the last year with my breaks, i also like completing base & insert sets as well.

Positives
base set looks awesome compared to last year.

superscribe auto set, again stunning

serial numbering on the front of card

Negatives
no base insert sets, which didn't know about as couldn't find a checklist before release.

redemption's are stacked everywhere in this release, don't get me wrong I like extra cards in boxes, but base would have been more preferable as at least they are in hand straight away.

platinum base set #/10 is the exactly the same as #/299 set, last year they had a blueish background, would have loved to have seen that this year.

way too many "insert sets" that are only based around material/jersey or auto, no base variations on them.

I'm sure there would be more positives & negatives, but that was just a quick thought on the product.

A lot of products, products that have some 'minor' hits that at least make you think you've had some kind of return for your outlay... it shouldn't be: nothing...... {huge gulf} .......super rare big hit. (for the price these are)

Absolutely. And it does seem like a nice product. But why subject yourself to a huge outlay for such minimal return. You can probably buy everything you'd want for much less than a case or anything would cost...

Despite the fact that you're a mod, you don't have the right to tell me I can't have and share my opinion. This product looks like a complete and utter ripoff and I want to warn people about that. I don't have any control or interest in what they spend their money on, I'd just like them to realise that if they bust this expecting to get anything remotely near valuable back, their chances are EXTREMELY low, much lower than most other products.

While I think that (and to be honest, all) Panini product(s) are overpriced, that one is known to be a bit of fun. It's sort of a low-ish-end product of theirs that you expect to have fun with. Gold Standard is considered high-end but the results are disgusting more often than not.

Last time I looked they were called hobby boxes not profit boxes
That being said I still think they are worth about $150 a box
I'm lucky I guess collecting a player where I can get most of his cards in this
Product for less then the price of a box except the solid gold and tags
But the way I look at it if no one busts then I can't get my cards on eBay or sites
Like OCT and that would suck

I never said you can't have an opinion, it would be nice just not to hear a negative one almost all of the time.

I think people are unfairly aiming this sort of negativity at Panini and implying that they are the only ones who do/have done these things. We all know that is not true!

When it comes to pricing, you have to remember that as an exclusive license holder, they would have paid a LOT more for that license than other companies in the past, so they will need to recover that somehow, a they are a business!

But the biggest problem is the way people immediately look at the 'return on investment' when busting boxes. To those people, a Kobe auto is not a Kobe auto.... It is a $100 card. And that is the problem! If you want to make money, go for a term deposit at the bank!!

Busting boxes is as much about the fun and surprise as anything. Personally, as a set collector, I will usually busy up to 5 boxes of a product before changing to ONLY by the singles I need. This is because I put a value on the base an inserts as well a the hits, therefore I get good value out of abox that doesn't have a Kobe auto! But once I get through a few boxes, the risk of doubles gets to high and I go only for singles. At least in those few boxes I have a chance to pull the bigger chase cards I need for the set!

While I have no issue with people having an opinion on cards/sets and values, I do find it a but rude to post in someone's box break thread that they have just spent their money on junk and make them feel down even before they get to bust the box! It would be no different to someone going into your mailday threads an saying that you just wasted your money on the cards you just posted!!

I have always been a Panini fan. Sure they make some releases that are ugly, but they all have. Too many people put UD on a pedestal and from what I have seen, even some exquisite cards are hideous looking, but I simply don't buy those ones!!

But this isn't a UD vs Panini thread or anything. This is talking specifically about the Gold Standard product.

Would you really spend $1000 on boxes of this just for base sets? Because other than a handful of scrub/older player autos and common GUs that's likely only what you're gonna get.

That's all this thread is about. The hideously overpriced product with such low change of anything worthwhile in return for a large amount of money spent.

And while I'm not saying you should expect a Kobe auto or anything from a box, to not even receive any one thing of similar value to one from a $2000 case is shambolic. What's the incentive?

I don't think I need to post anymore, people know where I'm coming from and a lot of people agree. Again, Panini are putting out some nice stuff, but THIS SPECIFIC PRODUCT is a huge ripoff as far as I've seen.

First of all id like to say im not a panini hater, sure ive not liked there products in the past, but there customer service has improved out of sight recently, my latest set chase is a certified patch auto set and my avatar is last years gold standard, so i know its possible for them to put out a product that is nice and good value.

But i have to agree that this is the worst product they have put out, heres my point of view, if i wanted a few cards from this product or to start a set chase i would buy a case and bust (as ive done in the past) and i would keep the base set, chase cards i was after etc. But things like a Kobe Auto or a Durant non rookie year auto is something that i wouldnt have in my PC so id still like to be able to sell off a few of the big hits to fund the set chase a little. This seems unachievable as from what ive seen 7/10 cases dont have a case hit, or card that would give back 1/10th of what you just bought.

Im not a big fan of removing a case hit as this was another attraction toward buying a case. Also a big big reason i think this is the worst product ever is simply it has the most redemptions out of any product ive ever seen. If your paying $200+ a box i personally dont want 4 redemptions... This is not a Panini thing if it was topps, press pass, UD anyone i would feel the same. As ive said in the past why release a product or committ to a checklist (or release date retro)when there is a chance these may never be signed. I could think of nothing worse than opening a box with 4 redemptions and a pau gasol jersey card, that is not a hobby to me.

How long will it be till we just log onto the home page of a card company pay them $200 and just get some random numbers and cards sent out? it sure seems to be heading that way...
i also think its very important to have this thread and discussion negative or not it provokes good conversation and sometimes independant thought

You know what the funny thing is? They apparently (and state on the video) took a lot of collectors opinions and feedback into account when producing this set so the old addage applies
