Interesting Article on Game Used Jersey Case

Good read Matt.

If Bill Mastro is found guilty of doctoring the Gretzky Ty Cobb card then whats that going to mean for PSA, they authenticated it? What a joke.

Anyone remember the quote from this article - http://sports.yahoo.com/news/former...of-huge-rookie-baseball-card-collection-.html

"So when Horton's PSA 9 card popped up on eBay for $400, buying it was a no-brainer. Young sent it to PSA three times, asking that they bump it up to a 10. The third time they did"

Oh.my.god!!!

WOW, this is massive. We all know how much crooks BGS can/have been, and now everything we've ever loved about PSA could well put them straight in the shit-house with BGS!

Was just reading some of the story about Dmitri Young's collection too. Side note, that dude had his PSA labels personalised! They all include "DMITRI YOUNG COLLECTION" in the slabbed label!

Holy shit, this news about PSA is just as big if not bigger.

Someone mentioned that the prison system will have to build a Separate prison to house these frauds and I'm afraid they are right, this is game changing for the hobby but I seriously think the majority of collectors will just bury their heads in the sand.

Worst thing is I swore by PSA, loved their service & no thrills labeling system so where to now?

Can any of these companies redeem themselves? I think the damage has already been done and the holes that have been dug are too deep to climb out of.

Its one thing to have individual collectors trying shifty stuff to make a buck; its another to have card companies engaging in shady practices. To have the authenticators of hobby doing the wrong thing... Wow.

As a Mikan collector, I'd never buy one of his rare early cards (Bread for Health, Scott's Chips, Royal Desserts, Bread for Energy) or his Bowman RC unslabbed. But maybe that's not even good enough now.

Well RE Mikan... Its only the Scott's or the Bowman I'd be more concerned with, due to the nature of the other cards (Royal Desserts was on a box like the Wheaties so trimming isn't an issue; apart from the ones still part of a whole box, they are all trimmed (See the Jim Pollard example of a full box... http://www.sportscards.info/Basketball/1950royalpollard.jpg) and the Bread Labels are usually highly condition sensitive because of the nature of them)

But overall with vintage cards; previously if a card was slabbed I always feel I could bid with immunity; that's why so many Jordan RCs are slabbed; because of the scamming that happens with them, no one would pay a premium for an unslabbed one.

Now that some evidence has come up to indicate you can't even trust PSA, I really have no idea what it'll mean to the vintage market. I'll be very interested to see what happens.

While people hate seeing event worn gear from the rookies, you at least know its been worn by them at the photo shoot....may have only been for a minute but its been worn by them.

The one thing I will say is that Panini does have agreements in place with certain teams now for Game Used material (Lakers and Mavs) and I would rate their current buying practices better than some others despite being mentioned in the article. They have used a lot of NBA jerseys purchased from meigray and steiner (Knicks) so you know a majority of them are legit.

A great example of this is this:

There have been a few cards I have owned over the years that had patches of legends on them that looked very "new" against other patches ive seen from players of a similar era.

Makes you wonder!

Cheers
Matt
A lot of the Panini Authentic is gathered in person Panini has reps at the games as well as events like the Olympics who take control of the items like Kobes shoes pretty much straight away

I said about a year ago here that PSA certs in many cases were worthless.... If I remember correctly a couple of people were keen to shoot me down (respectfully tho :) ) This article is disturbing... I hope Upper deck get kicked out of the hobby... They seem to be as dodgy as they come

Just noticed that Panini is named in that article.......

Don't say that too loud mate, I was shot down by certain members on here that think they are on Panini's payroll for saying something bad towards Panini. Let's face it, Panini are smart by only putting "The enclosed material is guaranteed by Panini America, INC." on all their material cards, this guarantee could mean anything but I'm sure we all know it's from a third party as the article says.

This is not a witch hunt on my behalf and I still collect but I only collect the odd on card auto and inserts from the 90's, I refuse to buy any material cards until the card companies change their ways and wording. It's my loss at the end of the day but at least I know my money hasn't been wasted on fake material cards.

The proof is there in writing and the FBI interviews are available for all to see but from what I've seen on here and other sites, the older collector's are the only ones that have shown some sort of interest in this topic and the remainder choose to bury their heads in the sand and pretend it hasn't happened. I don't think people need to stop what they are doing and boycott all card companies but at least show some concern after all we are the one's keeping these companies above water.

Do collector's really care if cards are game used or just off the shelf stock?

Maybe Panini (I have only mentioned Panini because they are the only company now producing material cards so put the pitchforks away) should scrap all material cards, clean up their image, change the wording on their cards and if it does cost them more pass that onto the customer. I would much rather pay for a material card that is guaranteed game used even dated compared to the old phrase "The enclosed material is guaranteed by Panini America, INC."

I'm not alone on some of the views above and my collecting has changed because of these issues which I hope changes very soon because this is a great hobby.

Hmmm so really my history of game used cards for the Wolves, could very well be a history of third party non game worn at all... boo. As if GU cards weren't cheap enough as is... wouldnt be surprised to see prices bottom out even more.

Damn this has annoyed me now, makes me want to sell off all my Bogut patches, Rose patches. Cards that I have spend hundreds if not thousands on and just go with autos.

Very frustrating knowing you could be collecting something that is insignificant to that said player.
