Interesting to say the least:

WELLS was asked if the card companies knew that what he was selling to them was not game used. WELLS said that the card companies were too smart to put their beliefs in writing but they knew a lot of what they were buying from resellers like WELLS was not game used. WELLS recalled a conversation he had with UPPER DECK buyer MIKE O'GRADY at the Anaheim, California National Sports Collectors Convention approximately three years ago. During the conversation, O'GRADY told WELLS that UPPER DECK needed eight DEREK JETER jerseys and they were willing to pay between $1,000 and $1,200 each. WELLS told O'GRADY that he was paying between $3,500 and $5,000 for JETER jerseys from STEINER SPORTS and STEINER SPORTS obtained their JETER jerseys directly from the New York Yankees.
WELLS told O'GRADY that by only paying $1,200 for JETER jerseys, UPPER DECK was inviting fraud. O'GRADY said that UPPER DECK knew what they were getting, but they needed the JETER jerseys at the minimum price.
On several occasions, O'GRADY told WELLS that he was not happy with the whole buying process but that was the way UPPER DECK wanted to do it. O'GRADY told WELLS that on occasion, customers would return problematic uniform swatch cards to the company and UPPER DECK would send those customers some type of replacement item.
O'GRADY told WELLS that UPPER DECK would buy game used pants and put the pants on their game used cards. UPPER DECK would tell their customers that the fabric swatch was part of a player’s jersey. WELLS explained that in the game used market, not very many people collect game used pants so pants sell for far less than jerseys. Also, pants had less player identifiers such as numbering and name tagging so they are easier to forge.

Wow! Great read! Makes you wonder how many gu cards are actually gu and how many are from where they claim they are from!

While people hate seeing event worn gear from the rookies, you at least know its been worn by them at the photo shoot....may have only been for a minute but its been worn by them.

The one thing I will say is that Panini does have agreements in place with certain teams now for Game Used material (Lakers and Mavs) and I would rate their current buying practices better than some others despite being mentioned in the article. They have used a lot of NBA jerseys purchased from meigray and steiner (Knicks) so you know a majority of them are legit.

A great example of this is this:

There have been a few cards I have owned over the years that had patches of legends on them that looked very "new" against other patches ive seen from players of a similar era.

Makes you wonder!

Cheers

Dunno how many Premo Patches I have of Harris where the contained patches don't resemble anything of which Harris would have worn in the Photoshoot.

Scotty, not sure if you were around at the time but UD said that for some players they used jerseys from other players in the team. Example some rookie players hadnt been designated numbers, so what they did is they went and bought Finley, Dirk, Dampier jerseys etc and had Harris wear them at the photo shoot and then cut them up. Would explain why you had some interesting letters in the patch cards!

Cheers

Hypothetically, if it came out that most, not all, but most game used stuff was not actually game used and/or fake, what do you think it would do to the hobby?

Sure, people would still collect and want to chase inserts, but it would be an ugly ugly year or more while card companies try to repair their image and restore faith in their brands. What a blow though that the ORIGINAL brings you close to the game reputation could be totally fraudulent. Disgraceful.

^ Thanks Matty, yeah I knew that they werent Harris jerseys's, pretty sure I pointed out a Finley one, when I got the card in the mail, ha ha.

Hey, when showing cards to people, how do you promote the "GU" cards... "yeah this one contains some fabric that they believe to be touched by the player"... ha ha.

I have a gamer piece from 91-92 signed with PSA authentication & a letter from Lou Lampson dated Sep 6 2007, Lou started reviewing all game used pieces since 2005 for this company. I'm beginning to think I'm one of thousands taken for a ride.

Put this together with the charges just brought against Bill Mastro and all the big players in the industry look pretty dirty at the moment.

While everybody is discussing all the new products on the market and arguing over the small things this is huge for the hobby.

I'm not sure this will change things within the card community but it will take a while for companies to redeem themselves which means the shoe is on the other foot now and they will know what it feels like to wait when seeking redemption.

This is one of the reason why I sold off a lot of my patch cards. Most rookie material these days is worn by the players at the photo shoot so you have a better level of comfort there but for older players jerseys etc.....im more skeptical than ever.

Seriously thinking about selling up myself, might put the feelers out and see what sort of intrest there is for some of my patch/jersey cards.

I don't like what I just read in that FBI interview and it has left a sour taste in my mouth, I haven't collected any new jersey or patch cards because they are just guaranteed and that's it.

Guaranteed for what? Guaranteed from 3rd party sellers?

Now all the sweet looking upper deck patch cards and jerseys in my pc have a big ? next to them.

Could this turn into a big collector class action law suit?

Anybody have an idea if this was just Football & Baseball? After reading a few documents I couldn't see much to do with Basketball.

The focus was on baseball but you would be naive to think it was not happening across the board - nfl, nba, nhl etc etc
