BREAKING NEWS! UD & Topps Out:Panini offically In!

With that decision by the NBA it will be the last time I collect another NBA card after this season ends. :fist:

It will be interesting to see if it will make any impact on the current market.

I guess its wait and see.

I really hope we give Panini the benefit of the doubt and see what they release before making too many judgments.

Honestly I was a bit shocked that the NBA would give an exclusive license to a sticker company but after reading through a few stories about this today, I'm starting to warm to the fact and endless possibilities of a different company producing Basketball cards.

If Panini get this right, they will be no worse than what we have been used to over the past few years. If they learn from the mistakes of Topps and UD and build on the good things they did, there may actually be some good products to collect.

Sure there may not be Exquisite or Chrome to buy anymore but I am sure that if Panini put out some good sets both high end and low end, people will continue to collect these products.

They may release better designed sets than what we have been used to, better and bigger patch cards and wait for it....

Has anyone had the thought that as a result of this new exclusive deal that a lot of the autograph combos that were not available before may now actually happen?

I can see MJ not signing anymore aside from UD memorabilia especially given his role within the UD company. But you know what.....maybe its time he stopped signing!

I can see Panini using Kobe/Lebron/Wade etc as the driver behind the brands they release....what a triple auto card that would be!

Anyway, I really hope everyone holds out making up there minds before seeing what Panini release.

I think they at least deserve that.

Cheers
Matt

Hi

I think as long they make some low, mid and high products it will be good

I see it as good thing i think the market had way too many products out each year, made a lot of the cards worthless considering there was so many bb products out there

So if we only end up with like say 6 products a year will make the cards worth a lot more. Lets have two of each low, mid , high end products. Rather than having 20-30 basketball products made most cards worth **** even the high end products most of them weren't worth much unless u got ultra rare card

well i think that news would have made a few people spit their cereal at the screen

Be very interesting to see what they come up with.

Will be cool to see heaps of past releases being busted for the UD/Topps fix.

I also might be able to get back into my non sport collecting :D:D:D

Has anyone else checked out Panini's website(s) and seen the products they're producing right now? I just had a look and for all their sports sets there's no sign of game used or autograph type cards.

I think like what has been said, Panini might have to work closely with the current manufacturers to get them in the right direction..?

Though I think this will be a great kick in the bum for all collectors as it will now get trading cards more in line, might even drive up values a bit, but don't think for a minute that UD and Fleer will not put out basketball product, they will do it with no NBA logo's, multi sport sets and other ways to get basketball. I am sure that it will actually make a MJ auto fun to get again as it will be in sets that you might never buy or collect.

From a set collector point of view, I think its awesome as it gives new life to a very boring and repetitive sets year after year. But what I think Panani might do is blend the NBA product together with Euro teams to cross market for the NBA as I feel that is what the NBA is going to do in the next 10 years anyway. Get the US, Canadian and Australian market used to Euro teams as its not that far away that you will start seeing the trapizoid in all NBA arena's near you.

I hate to say it folks, but the NBA has now just changed direction and the defection of good and great NBA players is only years away. The NBA wont be able to beat them, but they can join them.

Now my only question is.... Are we going to need to speak Italian to read the bloody cards?

wow!! this is great in my opnion. ive felt for a while that there has been way to many brands and sets of nba cards. im sure panini will be making some seriously good stuff or else nba wouldnt of given them the sole license. this should generally raise the value the rare cards that panini will produce because good cards will become much rarer than they are at the moment.

Why is it so bad that they don't do GU cards? The whole reason the market is so terrible now for cards is too many GU cards in un-numbered sets creating a flood. If they listen to the current manufacturers that closely, then this is going to be a massive failure. If they ignore them to an extent and start again, win/win. Sure we might have a year or 2 where we may lose some collectors, but then think of after the drought. All of a sudden it might actually be cool to get a GU card again.

I also noticed that, maybe there'll be none and inserts will be the big pulls! My question is, if they plan on making gu cards, when do they plan on purchasing NBA gu jerseys, how will they get the older ones, say Magic, MJ, Bird etc....

Also, another concern, what will UD do about unfufilled redemptions come the time they lose their production rights. Will they be allowed to produce say a Bron auto if his rights were sold to Panini? If not, thw consumer will lose out! Imagine pulling a MJ/Bron dual exquisite auto, only to find out that the card will never be made...

THis will be the best thing for the hobby, as kids will hopefully get back into collecting and actually be fun, not a money grabbing exploitation, that it has been for years. At least kids could hopefully afford it now, less auto's gu'd etc, this will help prices in the long run, by having a hiatus of bloody jordan, bron and every other countless auto.

Jordan 23, i know i mentioned jordan, im not bashing him, just passing an opinion,

Just saw some older products of Panini NBA in the early 90s Just wanted to share source on ebay.

Actually this wont be as hard as you think, they will do what UD do and buy these jerseys from auction houses. The current players jerseys are obtained through NBA Properties and shouldn't be a problem to pick up.

Please dont mistake the old Panini stickers for what they now plan to produce. They will be making cards like we are used to, they just wont be UD or Topps.

Possibly the best thing to happen to the NBA Hobby at the moment.

When we're all sick and tired of complaining about how crap UD can be, and how lame Topps are with their sticker-autos. From repeated failed redemption requests, to poor quality control (yep, this includes $500 packs with worn corners on the cards, FRESH from the box!!), this is possibly the biggest shake-up in the NBA Hobby!

As a collector from the early 90s, I always loved the ideas of inserts, and then we were introduced to GU & Autographed cards. They then went on to FLOOD the crap out of the market with these same cards, repeated sets, repeated featured-players (yep, MJ's one), all that crap that really makes you think twice about collecting at all.

Now, we're introduced to a NEW player in the game, with fresh ideas, new exclusive contracts, and all that jazz, and the first thing we do is get upset saying how sh!t they're going to be???

My suggestions for you all, buy up all the UD crap you can whilst it's still out there.....

Have heard that Chrome and Holo cards are licenced by UD and Topps, so does this mean that Panini are unable to make these due to licencing? I know they'd be capable otherwise, but wondering what the licencing means...
