australia post screw job - resolved

Sometimes I begin to wonder if Oz Post employees just decide, "You know what, I don't get paid enough to make the mail go through properly this month"

Yep, make no mistake about it, most of them are lazy and still expect to be paid.

I do a lot of overseas trading, mostly from Asia and the packages get scanned every step of the way from the acceptance all the way to flight transfers, until it leaves for Australia...after that it's all a mystery because the employees at Australia Post are too lazy. Their excuse is that, the tracking # for registered post is for signature delivery and not for tracking therefore it is optional to scan it. What makes them so much better than postal services around the world?

This was a major issue for me this week because I not only had a package where no delivery attempt was made, I also had packages which were about a week overdue. The people at the call centre could not find it in their system and would not accept the tracking status from overseas post offices and had advise me to contact them myself in order to track it down. A process which takes up to 30 days to complete, undelivered mail in Australia is limited to 14 days before it is posted back to sender. I asked her, if she was stupid, lazy, or all of the above?

She responded that this is how they have done things for the past 20 years since she has worked there. That answer pretty much confirmed my sentiments toward Australia Post.

Long story short, the packages arrived safe and sound and would have been in the country for at least a week , but they couldn't find it in their outdated systems because they are all too lazy to scan the damn bar codes. Yes, they are technically not doing anything wrong because their interpretation of the registered service is correct but having as much information as possible helps both sides in the long run in the event if something hasn't been delivered. And they refuse to do this, why? Because they are overpaid and lazy.

I haven't read the whole thread because Australia Post infuriates me. I find that franchised post offices are terrible and the official ones are professional and easy to deal with. The franchised ones don't care, they just care about making as much money as possible IMO.

Since I moved into my new place, I never get anything shipped here anymore, not one delivery I ever got made it here. It always finds it's way at my local post office even though I'm home the day it get's here.

I also get so many peoples mail that is not mine, some are only street's away, while other's are in a different suburb! I called Auspost after I got a few like this, and instead it only got worse.

But I use my parents address, and never had any issue the last 20years, maybe it's the guy working in that area that likes his job!

International registered post is a funny one. I traded a Kobe auto a few weeks ago to a guy in the USA as part of a big Faried PC item he was willing to let go. He shipped to my COMC account as I felt safer having it in my account within a few days and was about to bring stuff home anyway. I sent direct to him and at no stage did the tracking number work - not even until it left Australian shores. Once it hit the USA all the correct info appears on the USPS tracking site. He got the card ok and signed for it but Australia Post still does not recognize the tracking, not even for a signature.

I was told the tracking system Australia Post uses is not capable for tracking international mail once it leaves Australia and they have to use the receiving country's system, which makes dealing overseas incredibly stressful because you are basically relying on the receiving post office to do what is right and scan the items (more often than not, they do), since Australia Post likely won't do it because they have it programmed in their heads that it is not "compulsory" to do so, and they don't have the capabilities to even show proof of delivery anyways. And somehow we pay more for postage than most developed countries.

I have to say that some of these stories amaze me - I have never ever had a problem with Australia Post regarding parcel delivery or Registered post or tracking or anything.

I think the good thing about Registered post is that there is proof of lodgement, they weigh your parcel, they record your name and destination etc. They may not track it here in Australia (like you said, they believe its not compulsory), but if there is no record of delivery/tracking on the other end, they will have to pay you once you make a claim. They cannot argue with you.

I still find Registered Post the safest way to send anything because you guarantee it is the right person who is picking it up. All that tracking business offered by other services (unless courier), does not guarantee delivery to the right person, just what the postman thinks is the right mailbox. And surprisingly, PayPal thinks knowing all the steps in between is more important than the final step of the journey which, to me, is the most important one.
