Hockey doesn't give you physical base cards.

From what I have seen Marvel is the only product that currently gives a physical card for everyone opened. Probably due to the serial numbering for every card.

All other products only provide physical cards for inserts not base. Although unlike Marvel (someone may correct me) you can "combine" base cards (normally 10) to make it a foil which you can then gain as a physical card.

I think this is also reflected in the price which is why Marvel are more expensive because every card is a physical card.

lol I've done 10 packs of Marvel, not a sketch to be seen.

At the top end of what I've got is a Scarlet Witch holofoil, Quicksilver and Spiderman Legendary Orange, and a Quasar '92 Masterpieces buyback auto.

Everything else is base, foil auto and what if covers.

Must admit, I'm wondering if this is the future of card collecting ? What are peoples thoughts ?

Here's some of my Pros & Cons. Anyone got more?

Pros
Card company gets a bigger slice of the sale with no middle man. Might make different smaller subject sets more viable.
Easier for companies to make sets
Saves the expense of packing and shipping to stores...may eventually do away with "packs" altogether
Very easy for collectors to open a pack with zero waiting.
Very easy to trade with other collectors
Only have to ship home and store what you want.

Cons
Too easy to spend more than you intended
Might kill off card shops altogether.
Base cards/sets might end up extinct
Too easy for companies to make junk sets
Shipping may become a bigger expense factor

I Like the concept,

i like the idea how it can be sent straight to COMC, even though not everyone likes to use it it is an avenue for sales etc so you don't have to have everything posted back then relist them, it is to easy to spend money but that is self control I am sure if I had a card store on my way home from work I would duck in daily and buy a random pack,

id like to see UD do it with more of the marvel stuff

I agree that its likely the future of collecting, however it would need to see improvements before it could become fully involved. You need to be able to sell your cards on the site, not have to get them to comc and then lose 36% of your sale price. From what I can see these are already at comc so the fact you have to pay to get them to comc is pretty dodgy imo.

I would also like to see the ability to add physical cards to the list to complete sets, I bought a few boxes and joined a few case shares that I have physical cards of, also the cards I cashed out cant be used to redeem the awards anymore - I should of used them before I transferred them but that's another story...

As long as they keep it like this, in that the actual physical card exists and its not like the Star Wars/walking dead apps, in that they are just digital copies, I'm all for it.

As a side note, I did some math last night and there were 98500 Marvel cards available for trade on the site, which works out to around 230 cases of stuff, from what I heard, there was around 2,000 cases total, so even if 20% of the cards broken have been shipped off to comc/locked still only 15% busted through epacks site, of course thats just a guess, I dont know how to tell how much marvel stuff is on comc to maybe get a better idea

Personally I hope this isn't where card collecting is headed.

Much like digitally distributed games, and kindle e-books, consumers are getting screwed. A 24 pack box of UD Hockey Series 2 costs $79.95 retail (dacardworld have them marked down to $49.95), yet the epack box is $89.95.

So despite cutting out the middle man, and selling direct to consumer, you still end up paying more. And that's before factoring in that the base set is digital only.

And frankly, I like ripping packs and looking at the cards fresh.

Agree, I think they need to look at the pricing as some of the savings from the lack of packing and shipping to stores etc should be passed on to us collectors. And the shipping out needs to be more reasonable, as again us Aussies are always getting hammered on shipping charges. As it is now, it seems slightly more expensive than buying physical boxes - in Marvel at least. Though I think I've probably done better from epacks than I would have done buying boxes - but that's probably just chance?

And COMC should be doing a better deal for Epacks collectors selling through them, they have a huge market right at their doorstep being the sole agents, so could afford to make it more reasonable than the 36%. Otherwise they're just going to end up with having to store, insure, and administer everyone's collections as people won't bother moving them on at all.

If they make the base cards physical cards I think this could be the future of card collecting.

As I said in a previous post the ability to combine base cards to foil cards is a good idea, gives the base card a bit of value and nobody needs 20 copies of every base card but you can end up with that by opening a case. While you don't need 20 copies I personally would like 1 copy.
