2016 AFL Season Discussion

Former Geelong champion and 1989 Brownlow medallist Paul Couch has passed away at the age of 51. He suffered a cardiac arrest whilst cycling with friends this morning and could not be revived. Paul played 259 games with the Cats and kicked 203 goals. He was a two-time All Australian, won three best and fairest awards at Geelong and was named in the Geelong team of the century.

Vale Paul Couch.

Very sad news for the Couch family. In other bad news for Geelong fans, Jackson Thurlow has gone down with what looks like a serious knee injury.

Full credit to The Footy Show for posting this on their OWN Facebook page - a bloke could get extraordinarily smashed if this was a drinking game!! :-)

In other news, Brad Crouch and Rory Atkins have been dropped from the Crows side this week for "failing to meet club standards". Warren Tredrea (who for those outside SA, also reads the weeknight sport here on Channel Nine) said on twitter that they broke the alcohol curfew imposed by the leadership group over Clipsal weekend.

Well, just the three more sleeps until the first bounce of the 2016 Home and Away season!!......then we have a day off because of Good Friday...then back into it again!

What do you expect from your team this year? What would you consider a "pass" mark?

Let's get a bit of discussion happening people.......I'm bloody well excited!! :-)

I'm optimistic about the Eagles' chances this year. We should be aiming to make the Top 4 again, and ideally the Top 2. I feel our chances of achieving this depend on how well Redden and Jetta fit into the side.

I reckon a pass mark would be making a preliminary final, and even then if we lost that it would be disappointing not to make the GF again.

Hopefully Port Adelaide can get back into the eight. I think we should be able to, especially if Charlie Dixon can stay fit all year. I think making a semi Final would be a great result.

I think the two interesting games of R1 are GC Gazza v Bombers if GC win more 8 goals then its bombs away....the biggest game and l will drop in to have a look is Kanga,s v Crows....cant pick will back North...but jeepers this game is worth 8 points...will North forward line be to strong, will Goldy beat Sauce , will both crouch boys play, will Dangerfield er sorry about that Tex

Let's hope so. Just take week by week I guess. Fremantle without Sandilands will help us. Going to be a close game though

I'll be there, should know by the end of the 1st quarter weather we came to play or to make up the numbers. Also getting 2016 stars autographed, going to be fun either way.

I'm confident Richmond can come top 4, and make a very very serious finals run.

Nice game yesterday, good to see that quick 3-goal burst in the 4th quarter deliver us proud.

Que Dee's supporters all up and about in 3.....2.....1 :D

But seriously well done Melbourne, great win. Finally they don't look like they are playing Paul Roos' boring style of footy. They are actually attacking the game and it's great to watch. Sure they didn't look too impressive during the second and third quarter but a few years back that would have been enough for them to roll over and go down by 50 points. Credit to them.

Unless something amazing happens in tomorrow's Geelong vs Hawthorn match, West Coast have secured the daily double: Matt Priddis with 43 disposals - 29 to half time!! - and Josh Kennedy with 8 goals.

For the neutral, it's been a terrific round to date. Eight teams have scored 100+ points, including the West Coast vs Brisbane game which saw 268 points combined.

It's great to have footy back....although that view may have changed by 5:30pm tomorrow :-)

The high scoring fast footy has been a real treat so far. Not sure if it's anything to do with no sub and less interchange rotations, time will tell, but whatever it is, I like it! Hell, we might even see something I thought we'd never see again, 100 goals in a season.

Patrick Dangerfield, take a bow! What a tremendous debut for Geelong it was. In more bad news for the vanquished Hawks, Luke Hodge has broken his wrist and has already been ruled out of next weekend's Grand Final rematch at the MCG.

Not sure what to make of Hawthorn OR Geelong after today's game, although that can be said about every team after round one.

The major talking point has of course been the illicit drugs issue. The AFL and the AFLPA have been ducking and diving ever since Thursday night and I wholeheartedly agree with President Ed that the clubs MUST be involved in the process. Where I used to work, I was answerable to my supervisor and ultimately the owner (managing director) of the business. However, when top-level management bypasses middle-level management, it leads to enormous problems!
