2014 ESP Elite info discussion thread (Flyer P22 - Checklist P41)

All my NFL autos are blue and they look great. As long as they don't go red or use that fluorescent silver or gold on a black background.

dont mind the blue autos. but i dont think adopting the NBA trends is a good thing. will only be a matter of time before we see sticker autos and if you think they dont hold their value now, well youll be in for a rude shock if we ever come to that

Ok guys and girls, spoke with terry Today and while I cant share any new details, he has promised some exclusives for Ozcards in previewing the product before release.

Have to say if you thought last years was a good release.....stay tuned for this years!!!!

Cheers
Matt
Did he say when the previews will come?

There really isn't a need for sticker autos for NRL cards it's just lazy

US signature cards are produced in such massive volumes that stickers have become the easiest way to go. They have to nail down so many players from all over the country and have them sign many thousands of times over. The NRL market is tiny by comparison, so I can't see it ever getting to the sticker stage. We wouldn't stand for it anyway.

That's why I said lazy for nrl cards I can understand NBA doing it

I know it's not a big thing, but I'd love for the common sets to be in alphabetical order of location:

IE:
Brisbane Bombers***
Brisbane Broncos
Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs
Canberra Raiders
Cronulla-Sutherland (not under S for Sharks) Sharks
Gold Coast Titans
Manly-Warringah Sea-Eagles
Melbourne Storm
Newcastle Knights
NZ Warriors (not Warriors; not Vodafone)
North Queensland Cowboys (not under C for Cowboys)
Parramatta Eels
Penrith Panthers
South Sydney Rabbitohs
St George Illawarra Dragons
Sydney Roosters
West Coast Pirates***
Wests Tigers

*** I have even future proofed the list for the time being with the 17th and 18th teams bound to come in in the next couple of years ;)

Totally agree, a real bugbear of mine too. I hate the Sharks being at the back of the new albums and the Cowboys near the front, just feels wrong.

And the Warriors should never have changed their name and their colours; it was a disgrace. And as James says, even playing across the city at Eden Park is an away game!

I'd prefer Auckland Warriors and then the expansion team will be that city/region. At the moment though, I guess they have to appeal to all of NZ. Irks me no end when they're called the Vodafone Warriors though. Argh!

Didn't Dynamic use to put them in alphabetcal order. I do recall though Scanlan's put them in the order they finished the previous year.

I think you may be wrong about the Bombers though. I personally would hate to see another Brisbane team they should go to new area's for new fans and new sponsors before they start cannabalising each other. The problem with the comp at the moment is there is too many teams in Sydney competing against each other and other codes. If you bring another team to QLD should go out Ipswich way or Central QLD to plug the gap between Brisbane and North QLD.

One of the Stimorol sets was definitely in order of the ladder the previous year. Other Scanlens sets were random or alphabetical. Some dynamic sets were alphabetical, others look like they were drawn out of a hat. I think one had the previous years premiers first (Tigers I think) and the rest alphabetical.

It would be nice to go back to something more random, either as team sets or, even better, back to the totally random days of early Scanlens where checkists were REQUIRED and a page of cards looked COLOURFUL (not homogenous with a slightly different photoshop background each year = boring)! Having a player's position on the front of the card would probably be too radical these days though, given forwards play in the centers when it's their teams "scrum" feed (etc, etc).

I do think the cards look way too generic these days, there's no variety anymore! The choice of photos has quite a bit to do with it ... plus they are always head to waist shots since ESP took over. The lack of a background does make them look quite bland.

I like Mike's idea of just going completely random, not that it would matter to me as a team collector only and I would love to have a release with full action shots with backgrounds (not blurred or faded out like Select Champions) it would be a refreshing change up. You could have a small head shot on the back a little blurb and then space for an auto down the bottom OR when all your teams cards are in a pages the backs form that years team photo (full squad). One of my favourite cards is 1978 Steve Edge where there's a scum and you can clearly see him loose arm in the middle about to strike for the ball.....great shot.

  • Matai holding shoulder with trainer and a sponge
  • Thaiday lying on top of a couple of his own players with the opposition underneath
  • Benji doing a no look pass with a touch judge in the background with his flag up
  • Manu with the ball lying on the ground smiling
Back to work...........
