Chelsea are in dream land after a sensational victory over Barcelona, but the Blues face the prospect of going to the Nou Camp and doing it all over again next week. Beating Barca home and away is something which the likes of Man United,
Arsenal,
Newcastle and Leeds have all failed to do. A Champions League win on Catalan soil has only been achieved by one English side, with Liverpool managing a 2-1 Champions League victory in 2007 to add to their 1-0 win in the 1976 UEFA Cup semi. The
Reds couldn't do the same at home however, losing the return leg 1-0 at Anfield in 2007 and drawing the 1976 encounter in front of The Kop.
So who are the only British team ever to beat Barcelona home and away? You might be surprised by the answer. Step up, Dundee United.
In 1987 Barcelona were managed by none other than Terry Venables. El Tel's Barca side had a distinctly British flavour, featuring the likes of Gary Lineker,
Mark Hughes and Steve Archibald and had come close to winning the European Cup a season earlier, losing on penalties.
After being drawn with Barca in the UEFA Cup quarter-finals, few gave Jim McLean's Dundee United any hope of progression. United where unfazed by the star power of the Catalans however, and a 1-0 victory at Tannadice was followed by an even better 2-1 win away. United would go on to reach the final against IFK Gothenburg, but the Scots couldn't produce a repeat performance, and lost the two-legged tie, but they remain the British team that Barcelona simply couldn't handle.
In fact, this wasn't even the first time Dundee United had done for Barca home and away, because in the 1966/67 season they beat the Catalans 4-1 on aggregate in a second round Fairs Cup tie (the forerunner of the Europa League). A 2-1 win in the first leg at the Nou Camp was followed by a 2-0 win at Tannadice, so perhaps Chelsea might want to consider wearing tangerine shirts for their semi-final away leg
