No problem with him leaving but be a man and have some balls to tell the Dogs what your doing.

At least Gaz told the Dragons where he was with things.

this pisses me off more, as they lost costigan, smith, saffy to keep gasnier and he just ups and leaves.

Daniel Mortimer is set to play out his contract with the Paramatta Eels after rumours he would be leaving the club

why wouldnt he ? on massive $$$ to play second grade football, id be loving it. although he will struggle to get a contract on half the $$$ he is on now after next season.

Geez - a man walks out on a footy team and all hell breaks loose.

Oh well...think what you want. With sportsmen these days, they come and go with such regular monotony, it hardly seems worth getting your blood boiling over it, but if you want to, that's up to you.

And as for Gaz, yeah sure, apples and oranges. But he still left his team in the lurch. And has done it again. But they welcomed him back with open arms and won a comp, so I guess the ledger is square.

SBW & Gaz are totally different, for one Gaz left at end of season...
Gasnier had 3rd party contracts with CH9 which were approved by Eddie Maguire, once Eddie left the new CEO canned the 3rd party deals, StGeorge was willing to pay them but the NRL said NO as it would be included in the cap, because this money was not forthcoming from CH9, Gasnier had financial commitments that would not be meet, the club was happy to release him so he could make that money back, so he left with the clubs approval, futher more Gasnier has always stayed at Saints for unders, he could have earnt more, but his loyalty to the Dragons kept him there, yes he was still highly paid, he left for France made a **** load of money was able to pay off his financial commitments and invest, he came back to the Dragons again on lesser money for the first 2 years and he would have been paid more the next 2 years but he has decided to retire...
Now to Smith/Costigan/Saffy, JSmith was offered a 3 year deal on very good money by the Sharks, Bennett told him to take the deal as it gave him security and an extra 2 years in the NRL, remembering that JSmith was a late developer and it's only been the last few years where he has made money.... Costigan was offered $250,000 by Newcastle he literally signed straight away but again the Dragons were offering closer to $180,000, same as Saffy got offered $260,000+ to go BACK to union, again the Dragons were not offering anywhere near that, Bennetts philosophy is to build a deep squad with good depth, so he basically offers players a little bit less to spread the money around.... There was an article in the paper saying that JSmith etc were dirty on Gasnier etc, funny that when we played the Sharks at Kogarah which was Gasniers last game there, the last player to leave from the Dragons dressing room was JSmith who was hanging out with Gasnier....

Interesting. In light of this, I have somewhat changed my opinion of Gaz. So thank you for the info.

Still...with SBW...a think a great talent was lost and I don't see what he did to be the crime of the century many other RL fans think it is.

As a Dogs fan, I'm pretty much with you on this... I was disappointed to see him go, he'd always been one of my favourite players... But in my eyes the Dogs had not shown a willingness to spend for a winning team for a couple of years at the point he left, and there was no news of anything big in the pipe-line... I feel for his team-mates, who he definately left in the lurch. But they were already IN the lurch, with or without him, mainly (in my opinion) due to maagement's apparent desire to build a "nice" club, rather than a SUCCESSFUL one! Yeah, it sucked at the time that he walked out, but I'd be happy for the excitement he'd bring to a game, and would have nothing against him wearing a Dogs jersey again...

Your missing the point. He had a contract. Here's a tip. If you have a contract and leave your emplyment . You aint starting somehwre else unless your previous employer agrees. Hence the Bulldogs getting copmensated.

GASNIER and SBW--no comparison, your comparing apples with oranges.
E.W
i believe your captain was one of those mid-season walkers

Preston Campbell to retire.

I hope the NRL tie him him up for a job very quickly.

One of the toughest little men to play the game, he will be a great influence many young kids out there.

Say hello to the richest rugby league club.

Hunter Sports Group Completes Knights Acquisition

The Hunter Sports Group (HSG) has today completed its acquisition of the Newcastle Knights.
The acquisition, which includes a $20 million bank guarantee and payment of the Club’s liabilities which were in excess of $6 million, has been completed 5 days ahead of the revised August 10, 2011, deadline.
The complex transaction included the transfer of all contracts and agreements to the new entity, while the vast majority of the club’s liabilities, including its tax bill, have now been settled.
HSG CEO Troy Palmer is pleased all speculation over the acquisition had finished and the only thing left to consider are the massive benefits the change of ownership will mean to the community of Newcastle and the Hunter Valley.
"A range of matters in what was a complex transaction were completed for today’s formal handover, with all contracts and agreements transferred to the new entity,” Palmer said.
"The vast majority of the club’s liabilities, including its tax bill, under the terms of the acquisition agreement have now been settled.
"I think we should look forward to the positives this change of ownership has created and at the same time appreciate the great opportunity that is now being presented to the entire Newcastle Rugby League community.
"The Hunter Sports Group is a not for profit organisation and any surplus profits will now be re-invested into the Hunter’s youth and their development," he concluded.
Earlier this month HSG advanced $3.5 million to ensure the Knights met their financial obligations in the lead-up to the closure of the acquisition.
Nathan Tinkler said, ”I am delighted the Hunter community will play an integral role in the development of the Knights to again become a powerhouse in the NRL. The signs are good as the First Grade team is set for the finals.
“Our focus is on developing the young talent in the Hunter Valley to become Knights, while welcoming many of our former players back to Newcastle.”
Since the March vote when 97 per cent of Knights’ members voted to approve its acquisition, HSG has signed Wayne Bennett as coach for the next 4 years, as well as signing internationals including Darius Boyd, Kade Snowden, Timana Tahu and extended captain Kurt Gidley and coach Rick Stone to long term deals.
A range of HSG initiatives have seen the Knights’ membership more than double to over 15,000 members, while crowds have increased to an average of over 18,000 per game.
The Knights now join the Newcastle Jets and an International sporting events arm in the Hunter Sports Group.

Rumblings at the Sharks Steve Matai is in their sights even though he is not off contract, Nathan Gardner out of favour

My wife still refers to him as "Judas". LOL. But he did walk out, and that's good enough for me to lump him in the same basket as SBW!

Fair enough, your opinion.
