I have a mate who is not part of this forum but is heavily into this. Has a 6ft x 2ft x 2ft tank and is quite impressive. What did you need to know?

Electric blues!! GOOD luck keeping them alive!! These guys are one of he hardest to keep happy, every time i get them to a good size BAM DEAD! Down to my last electric yellow, (well he is more blue/yellow now) he has outlasted every fish i have put in my tank, been in there since day one ! I am getting a female this week to see if i can get some puppies :) Its so dissapointing to see them flop over dead after all the effort and mone you put into them!!

Make sure you have a lot of rocky hiding spots, also check the ph levels on a regular basis. If you can feed the live food a couple of times a week you should have more luck than most with these guys.

:) i was just curious as to who else here plays with fish.. the electric blue male ive got is about 12cm and is a few years old now.. :) got him from gumtree a few weeks back... pretty much just seeing if there are people here that breed american cichlids or friendly african ones or other fish that can mix with them such as bristlenose plecos loaches etc :) fish shops are too expensive most of the time imo.. was also wondering if there were any good forums :D

6 tanks.. whoahhh must be a nice electricity bill for you every quarter :D

ohh also looking for any rare fish like black severums and electric blues texas variants etc :D

I used to focus on cichlids, now i 1 tank just for discus, 1 for babies, the other 4 mixed. Feed them the right stuff, keep the water warm and they breed like crazy!!!

Yeah mate breeding cichlids is probably my main hobby. I have approx 40 tanks with only about 22ish running at the moment (shut a few down;time and winter) Electricity can be a killer but a well insulated fish room helps keep it in control. My biggest display tank is 8 x 2.5 x 2.5.

Eletric blues are probably one of the easier ones to breed, plenty of water changes, good diet and they should breed well, the key is probably to catch your holding female and put her in another tank until she spits or catch her and strip her (don't do this the first time she holds). The fry will grow like crazty with brine shrimp or even NLS Grow formulea. When they start to mature you will need to start removing the males because a highly dominant male can wipe out a tank of juvies pretty quickly.

I would say ACE Forums is the best Aussie forum, there will definatley be the odd crow on there.

Good Luck

Ross

yeh ive pretty much read up on all that but its good to be assured that the random stuff on the internet is somewhat right.. haha

im limited to my one tank at the moment which is only a 90l jebo tank so prolly cant do much.. really would like to breed firemouths or something a bit harder to find. i just thought id try something easy first and maybe chuck one or 2 into my bigger tank...

ill def check out ace also..

do you breed any harder to find fish :) like ebjd or black sevs?

this sounds like an interesting hobby and a experiment worth doing at home haha.

I am tempted to buy a couple gold fish and feed them viagra to see what happens. Maybe some horny goat weed.

$2 a fish surely is worth the try for pure scientific research?

The males have the white spot on the back fin yeh??

Generally this is an indicator that the fish is male....but can not be relied on 100%, Electric Blues are simple to sex...the males are electric blue and the females grey with perhaps a tinge of blue.

It normally starts with 1 tank and as they breed you then need another tank to keep the fry in and so on and so on and before you know it you have another addiction.

I generally keep African cichlids not American but both these are beautiful fish, on the harder / more expensive ones to breed I have "Gold" Altolamprologus compressiceps / Black Calvus / Cyphotilapia frontos / Callochromis macrops to name a few.

some nice looking fish there matey.. the last one is a bit weird lookin :) but those first few are very nice.. love the frontosa's

been reading up on how cuckoos fertilise other fishes eggs so i was thinking of looking for 1 to throw into my breeding tank... do you think they will eat too many of the eggs though?

and can i get away with leaving the fry in a fry enclosure until around 1cm then throwing them back in with their parents or do i need a separate tank for fry?

nah im not 50 I dont need assistance.

In all honesty I think it be an interesting experiment. even using some of those chinese remedies lol. hell even some chicken feed with growth hormones in it lol..

but then again I bet all these tests were done on rats already haha. maybe ill takeup astronomy.

Just thought I'd bump this up and see how everyones fish tanks are going. I have 2 myself a 70L and a 140L. In the 140l tank I have a school of 4 large silver dollars and a 25cm pleco and the smaller tank is a community tank with some plecos, gouramis, paradise fish and some widow tetra.
