The only good bit of advice I can give you Terry, is that your business model must be sound. From day one you have to make sure you make money. Breaking even is just another word for slow death. I dont kow what you life experience in business is like so please dont think I am giving advice on how to suck eggs :)

Market research is a must before taking on any project like this.
I would love to see you follow your dream my friend.

How could I take offence to a fair comment like that ;) I have looked at this idea for longer than I have been online buying/trading and selling NBA. I don't plan on sitting in the shop and seeing how it goes, I will be doing some good advertising in a number of well known publications to go along with a website just to name a couple of things. I have had to consider a worst case scenario but hopefully that wont happen at least for the short term and having a short term lease (rare) made it worth the punt. I will also be looking at getting RC accessories which is not catered for in the area I have chosen.
One of my areas of focus will be to keep catering to the online market as a fall back plan in the event of minimal retail sales.
ps, Hobby shops & sports are here to stay unless armageddon happens ;)

Just wanted to give A big thanks to everyone who put in some great advice and thankfully I had thought of pretty much everything already. Had heaps of retail & customer service experience which should only help me in the long run and the unknown makes the idea even more exciting :D

Oh yeahhhh...good luck Terry

Thanks mate :)

I hear you but with the ammount of online buying and selling it is difficult to know the true figures, I have just calculated based on minimal sales like 2 boxes a day and I know of quite a few collectors SOR who will be supporting me !
Considering the number of non collecting shop owners (killed the hobby by overpricing and dealing in searched or damaged cards) I can only see positives coming from it. I spent nearly 2 years doing every sunday at the markets which was successful until my son was born and my lack of boxes and packs did make it more difficult with many wanted to bust something. I only stopped due to other commitments.

First of all good luck. A big gamble, but if you have the business model, the passion, the dream and the drive...anything is possible.

To the poster about setting up in Parramatta, NSW...that would be a god-send. Sadly, I have seen my 3 dealers on the Central Coast close (1 is close to closing) and can't find anything in Sydney any more (maybe someone can enlighten me).

Finding this community certainly has helped me out. I am lucky I found a new dealer on here for my NRL fixes.

One thing I would add is a website (sorry if already mentioned) even if its just a front page with contact details. Nothing worse than sending emails and not getting an answer.

Again, good luck. Online is cheap obviously, but I like going in, browsing, picking up something and having a chat with like minded people.

Also, maybe some NRL cards.

Re: Hobby/card shop - Should I chase my dream ! Or am I just dreaming ?

I think someone mentioned it earlier....but an internet cafe set-up would be a good idea....at the very least a laptop that you can charge people to look stuff up!!

It'll come in handy for people when people are looking to purchase singles or complete trades...they'll need to go online and check out their wantlists on OCT!!

It could also be a negative if they then jump to Ebay or similar site to compare prices....beware!

The internet will be connected but without a huge amount of floor space (More space = more rent, cabinets and stock) having people using computers in store will not sell me packs etc ;)

Really interested to see how this goes and hope it works out.

Sometimes you just gotta grab life by the knackers and go for it full steam ahead.

Re: Hobby/card shop - Should I chase my dream ! Or am I just dreaming ?

Just read this whole thread and everyone has great ideas. Now as a kid/13 year old, a lot of people are saying, try to sell packs, singles etc, to get kids into the shop. I say great idea! As kids, we just can't go in and buy 2 boxes each week  Packs and singles will be great for kids to start out collecting. And for the pool tables/ps3's etc, I say that's another awesome idea! I know I would be in a hobby shop, where I can play pool and 2K11 with mates!! And also, we MUST get other products in a part from cards. Believe me, you won't be doing any good with a lot of kids by just selling cards. Heaps of kids just don't and won't like cards, so the stuff above is very important!!

GOOD LUCK!!!!

Hopefully you can sell a few boxes etc every day as it looks like it might be Perth's new drop in zone from some of the responses posted.
