hi all, just for something different (i think football did this not long ago) for people who have played our wonderful game, lets talk injuries we have all sustained!

ill start:
back when i was 26 (11 years ago!) i was playing local comp Agrade and was out on the fastbreak went up above the rim for a nice 2 handed slam and was "tunneled" by the oppositon player! landed with me right hand out and crushed it...
i got up and my right hand was bent around on a 90 degree angle and the top of my hand/wrist had a lump the size of a softball on it...
yep you guessed it, fractured wrist in 8 places and displacement of the radius, no pain for about 10 mins then it felt like my arm had been set alight, nice and painful the orthepedic surgeon got me straight up to theatre and they knocked me out and "moulded it all back into place" surprisingly i didint get pins and plates, apparently there were too many loose bone fragments lol...
6 weeks in plaster and supposed to "bum around and do nothing" i go back to the orthepedic surgeon they do a scan and i need it "remoulded" day surgery cast off and they reset it all and another 6 weeks in plaster, except this time the plaster is from myfinger tips to my shoulder, locked in a right angle at my elbow, probably the most uncomfortable 6 weeks of my life...
6 weeks past and all good, healed ok apparently except when i get my cast off my forearm is half the size of my left forearm, plus i have a nasty staf infection becasue i was allergic to the lining under the cast, so potent anti biotics and inti inflammitires i had to take and a strange thing happened, when taking the tablets i felt tired and ke falling asleep, which shouldnt be happening, the hospital i foun out gave me the wrong tablets, should have been anti inflammitires i got instead anti sea sick tablets, and they reacted strangley with the anti biotics! real proffesional on the hospitals behalf...
anyway my right wrist isnt as good as it used to be about 80% rotation now and arthritis which according to the "roles royce of orthepdeic surgeons" who i saw in melbourne is a great result!!! easy for them to say!!!

far out man that's brutal! I could dunk in high school but only with the little mini ball lol, almost got there with the normal ball but not tall enough damn genes, would love to be 6ft4 or so!!
I played a bit during high school, into my 20's until I was injured at work a few years ago, just getting back to the stage now where I can do stuff so hope to be able to play comp bball again in a few months!!! played low grade stuff, social mens comp, sub'd in for some A grade but didn't do too good and didn't get much time cause there was plenty of players on the team, would rather get a fair share of court time and play with mates but also have competitiveness to win the game.

Worst injury I've had is just the usual broken fingers, rolled ankles, ball in the nose etc etc, nothin extreme like yours wow.

I could dunk lobbing the ball to myself but never in a game. One game I was going in for a layup at full speed on a fast break and got coat hangered from the side. I pretty much did a flip and landed directly on my tailbone then my head. I was knocked out for awhile and when I woke up couldnt really move my legs or even feel them. I got taken away in an ambulance and spent the night in hospital. Had a severe concussion and a fractured tailbone. Spent six weeks lying down. Unfortunately there was no position that provided any comfort at all. The pain killers also ended up constipating me which meant that when I had to take a crap I had to push really hard.... not easily done with a fractured tailbone let me tell you! lol

The ultimate insult to injury was that my family had to help me go to the toilet and shower. Yeah - it really sucked! lol

Playing in a school competition in Year 8....bottom two teeth knocked out by a deliberate back-hander off the ball....blood everywhere....the offender got suspended from memory!

Ok my basketball injury is a bit odd..

I was at training and my team was having a full on practise game, where everyone was going really hard and rough.

There was a loose ball and it was bouncing out and a player on the other team and I were both sprinting, chasing the ball. As the ball went out of court we both tried to slow down but we were both going to run into the wall (there was only a meter or two between the base line and the wall). My opponent slightly pushed me, causing me to run into a fire extinguisher that was attached to the wall. But when I hit the fire extinguisher, it fell off the wall and on to my foot! Hurt like hell for about an hour.
Ended up braking 2 toes.

I've done 2 injuries from playing ball playing A grade basketball the last couple of years. First was just a rolled ankle from getting a rebound and landing on someone's foot...but this "rolled ankle" was actually streched ligaments and I can actually stand on my foot with it sideways  Only way to get it back right is to have an operation and get the ligament cut up and sewn back together to the correct length, but really isnt any trouble and I can roll my ankle now and it doesnt even hurt or swell up or anything  Second and my worst bball injury was when I was defending a 1/1 fast break and me and this other bloke and when we got to the rim I with both jumped up to foul him hard accross both arms and mid air he hip checked me and I went flying and landed really awkwardly on my wrist and then skidded accross the court and smashed the back of my head into a concrete wall and was seeing double but only for like 10 seconds or something. Got up feeling a little sore in the wrist but thought I would from landing on it and continued the game and got pretty stiff after I cooled down. Was sore but I wasnt concerned and thought it was just a bad sprain so left it alone but but didnt get better after a month or so and couldnt lift anything over 3kg with that hand. In the end I fractured my scaphiod and had plaster put on for 6 weeks but didnt heal so i had to go in for an operation and get the fractured actually chiseled off, 6 months after was good as new!

Played a pick-up game at school some years back and t-boned on the foot. The other's big toe t-boned me right foot directly on the knuckle of my big toe. To say I hit the deck is an understatement - it killed. End result was a broken toe and a week off school. Other than that .... fractured ring-finger on my left(shooting) hand from to many just missed rebounds. It's actually splintered near the middle knuckle.

I never hurt myself too badly in competition, but plenty of injuries playing pickup games or just mucking around.

One time playing on a 9ft ring I went for a baseline dunk on my mate who is 6 inches taller than me. We were 15 - I was 6'1" back then and he was 6'7". I went up for a one handed tomahawk and he was below the rim and jumped up for a block. I actually got way above the rim (about head height), and the ball was higher than his hand at its peak so it was going to be an awesome dunk.... except I ever so slightly misjudged the jump and ended up hitting the inside of my bicep/elbow on the side of the backboard. My arm stayed glued to the board and the rest of me kept going causing me to flip and land flat on my back. That hurt a bit.

The most emotionally painful basketball related injury actually happened playing can soccer. I went to kick the can, but my foot hit the ground vertically and shattered my toes and the bones from the toes connecting to the top of my foot. On crutches for 3 weeks. The worst thing was it was 3 days before my highschool championship basketball game. I was the leading blocker and rebounder and the main defender on my team, and not a bad scorer either (though I prided myself on my 4 blocks per game average - not bad for untimed 20 minute halves games). Anyway, I ended up sitting on the bench pleading to the coach to put me on just for one shot. I said I would just hop around, get the ball and lob up a 3, but he didnt want to risk my foot getting injured any worse - something about future potential which I wasnt interested in at the time. We won the game, and I got my championship medal, but it just didnt feel the same.

Back when I used to play U14's league in NSBA I went up for a running jumpshot and had both my legs taken out from under me. Instead of falling flat on my arse, I unfortunately landed on my right knee and managed to both hyper-extend it and damage my patella tendon and my MCL. I'm pretty sure I need a knee re-construction since my knee gives way every time I put it under heavy load like running up stairs...

Haven't bothered with it though.

playing my practice game for rep last night, so this is how the story began, It's not an injury but somebody might be out of the game for a very very .... VERY! long time. Anyways we were playing our first practice game of the season and (not to be arrogant) I am pretty good, so we were thrashing this team by around 29 points and there was 9 minutes to go. I try the old Rondo move on the opposing small forward that was on the other team, you know the move where you fake it behind the back and they fall for it and lose there speed, luckily it Worked, did it again and again, then he started to get it now so I then decided to do another rondo move where you go up for a layup and fake it, spin and go for the tip in. (I'll post some examples below). Well i did that on him, he went flying. He got up walked up to me with his fist pointing right at my face and his other fist just in front of his his stomach and I'm like "this mo fo wants to fight". So my boi Denzel (PF) gives him a push, the opponent punches denzel in the face then my other boi Josh (C) and Jack (PG) come into it and suddenly a brawl begins. I go in there to break it up and funnily enough the only people who get suspended, or should I say person is the guy who wanted to fight in the first place anyways, he got suspended, no big deal, only 91 weeks, apparently he gave the ref death threats but I didn't see it happen because I was getting this little kid off denzel's back, I know it wasn't funny at the time but now that you look back at it, it was hilarious. They are also starting a magazine for our rep team and Denzel, Josh and I are on the front cover and the title will have something to show how brave we were during the fight and when denzel told me I just pissed myself laughing, they are already running out of titles, anyways I am glad to be on the very first issue, hope it goes well (will post a picture of the front cover when it is made) :) My worst injury would have to be when I was on a fast break and some guy pushed me right in my back and i did half a flip in smacked my head on the ground so hard, was only out for the rest of the game though. Anyways rondo links below \/

when did this happen?

Yeah saw that.

Seems to have been the fastest tribunal in histor then to suspend him for 91 weeks!

I'll send you details, I can contact the refs because I used to ref. Wait do you mean what night?

also i think 91 weeks was a bit harsh but still, fights should never be started unless your watching it :)

Man I remember that day, I wanted to help you but I knew you were going to beat him coz you had like 5 people, why did he start a fight with you, surprised he didn't want to start a fight with jack because he kept trash talking! Anyways my worst injury was when I fractured my leg when I went for a rebound.
P.S. to jimmy, so surprised also that denzel didnt get suspended, i think he got favored because he knew josh (the ref)
