BREAKING NEWS! UD & Topps Out:Panini offically In!

The only thing ive really gathered from this thread, is the fact that some people will never be happy!! Hating on UD and Topps but not willing to give a new company ago???? Come on guys it hasn't even started yet and there is so many people calling the time of death on our Hobby all ready!! Neck up a bit.....

This pt was probably said, but dont have time at work to troll through 11 pages....

wow on the news.....

& I wonder how much Panini had to pay to get the exculsive rights... surely UD & Topps was making $$$ from bball..... & that makes me think Panini's bid was greater than UD & Topps put together !?!?!?!

Have heard that Chrome and Holo cards are licenced by UD and Topps, so does this mean that Panini are unable to make these due to licencing? I know they'd be capable otherwise, but wondering what the licencing means...

I guess UD a topps have the patents for their specific technologies, but i am sure there will be other ways to make "pretty" cards.

my 0/0 idea might come to fruition!!! I think Panini should make auto patches of players who dont have any like Eric Piatkowski and Eric Montross and any other players whose names are Eric

Sounds good. Montross would have to be 00/00, jersey #ed (Cool Montross fact: he averaged 0.8ppg and 1.8 fouls per game in the 99-00 season). Also the set will need Eric Barkley, Eric Snow, Eric Dampier and Eric Musselman the coach. I hope you are lintening Panini (Perhaps not to this idea, but some of the others have actually been good :) ).

Haha Piatkowski has Autos in 90's Autographics, and has patches, Tagmen and Logomen in last years SPGU!

Ok.... just read through all 13 pages haha..... was a good read; but DAMMM.... didn't see this coming... thought it was a joke when I started reading it.

My thoughts on it are I will miss some of the current stuff & some of the brands (although a lot of the brands aren't what they used to be) but overall I think this is very cool (minus the monopoly part of course).

UD needed a good kick in the pants & it's about time they got it..... as others have said I get sick of all the same repetitive **** year after year & the flooding of GU, 1/1's etc... & Topps & their bloody parallel's...

Really don't understand how some people are saying they won't collect anymore after this year..... sounds very ignorant... are you collecting for the sport or the brands?

At first I thought Pannini???? But just because most they make now is stickers doesn't mean they can't make nice cards..... 9M is a lot of change & they wouldn't of invested that much if they weren't gonna take this seriously & do their research..... now I'm excited & can't wait to see what they bring out..... the hobby needed something new & this is it people!!!!!!

i think panini will outsource the contract to UD and topps for ideas etc

Ideas??? Ideas??? Haven't you noticed the same repetitive crap year after year?

Wow, this is certainly some news indeed.

I know with it, I can already see some of my collecting goals well and truly gone that I have worked on for the past 6 years.

However, it makes me appreciate more and more what I have obtained in the past, as they will be no more.

Spending my morning reading through all this, it really does make me raise an eyebrow. Aaaaaallllll the complaints people threw at UD and Topps about this and that, all of a sudden doesn't seem so important with the thought that they will no longer be there. It's amazing isn't it, to see these posters now missing something already. I guess some people out there never know what they had, till it's gone.....

I think this might be exactly what the bball card market needed. Everything was becoming repetitive, worthless. I can see this putting value back into alot of the releases over the last 10 years aswell as possibly increasing the value of cards that Panini produce into the future depending on how they go about it. I think alot of people have in their minds all the old Panini sticker sets but thats a long time ago now, I'm interested to see what they come up with! Something fresh for once!

woah...been outside the hobby loop for a couple months so this was a huge shock, personally think its very bad news for our hobby, i dont reckon panini will do nice high quality products, stickers may be big in europe but that **** wont fly with american/aussie collectors. why the NBA would go with panini is a mystery to me...i cant wait to see what stuff they can put out on the market, but im not holding my breath for somethig better than UD/topps could do.

I heard some news about Panini today from a friend who knows people from UD and Topps

From what he heard

-Upper deck didnt even seem like they cared about the news (he thinks they have something in the works and were prepared for this

-Panini will be making High end (I guess it makes sense if your gonna spend that much to make $ ur gonna have to go high end)

-And the biggest and worst piece of news he told me is that Panini is in the works of buying out Donruss

-I just remembered he said players on contract with UD and Topps will not be able sign with Panini until there contracts are up

-UD can still make UDA products, they just can not make basketball cards

take it for what its worth,
Mike

Thanks Cocky....a friend of a friend that has friends....LOL

Lets hope that he's wrong about the player contracts to some degree. The hobby needs its main product to have Bron at least but it forces Panini to source players and most likely ones that we can't get at the moment at least.

For the exclusive contracts the players would most likely have to be bought out of there exisiting contracts or wait for them to expire.

I can see MJ not signing at all for Panini (due to his UD partnership) which will be a great thing honestly!

I hope this mean's they can get some rare signers like Grant Hill, Barkley etc to sign cardboard again.

Me too. Mj's been with UDA for over 18 years now i'll doubt he'll jump ship to an unproven card company.Plus he's a got a contract to sign other memoribilia eg. balls, jerseys, photo's etc.

and thats the key to ALL of this at the moment - until Panini announce something we really are all speculating on what/how/why they will produce.

I agree with the comment about high end, obviously they have forked out a bucket load to get the deal, they are not going to stick to producing only stickers.

The biggest challenge for them will obviously be players who are on exclusive contracts, and bringing back consumers who had lost faith/interest and belief in the current crop of companies making cards.
