BREAKING NEWS! UD & Topps Out:Panini offically In!

They are still involved in other sports (may get back into basketball eventually) so i can't see them alienating collectors. Especially since the collector hasn’t done anything directly to cause the change (although their buying habits may have)

Fair point. I guess my point was that they may be less inclined to chase up on autos from NBA players now.

But we don't know the product list. They just might have a low end product, middle tier and a high end one as well.

They have a great chance to make quality product and I for one hope they do. The potential is pretty great imo. Are we that brand loyal? Most of us have been bent over backwards by UD at times.

i dont understand why so many people are trashing panini already? They have stated they will have lowend-highend products. They are a huge company and i dont think they are going to take getting exclusive rights to distribute NBA cards lightly. I think we should reserve judgement until we see the product.

+1!

Anyone directly dissing pannani at the moment is just upset at nothing. NO ONE knows how this is going to turn out yet, if it turns too **** then you can all pull out the old told ya so line. If it does turn out alright, then ya all gonna have to suck it up.

They would have to sell a hell of a lot of sticker books and crappy $2 packs if they are going that route predicted by some to get back the 9M us they invested in the rights for the NBA.

Hence I'm speculating we see similar products that what we are already used to but with a smattering of lower end stuff as well.

With the price they paid there is the thought that pack and box prices might even go up. Thats a scary thought.

UD had this coming so not surprised that they have been shafted.. On the other side, Panini will be monopolizing the market which, from my experience, is never a good thing.. Only time will tell, I guess.

from what i have read panini will have some kind of panel for direct suggestions from collectors, im going to reserve judgement until i actually see the product

UD have had the monopoly in NHL since 2006...so I guess there is a case study to see whether or not the move has worked. Not sure what the feedback has been from collectors there.

UD even went so far as to bring back "traditional" brands like O-Pee-Chee who had been working with Topps since 1965 and Bee Hive.

Hopefully Panini can work with UD and Topps to keep some of the traditional brand names alive.

can we safely say this is pretty much for our collecting hobby? Panini sucks a$$. i dont understand the NBA. How beckett and the nba can say that it will rejuvinate golbal collecting is bullsh!t. it wont do anything but decrease the amount of collectors. can you see people like Tim (exquisite collector) ersk, et al going after Panini? come off it!! no one will want to touch it. one company making cards is stupid. its not the end of upperdeck or topps though. i think panini will outsource the contract to UD and topps for ideas etc

Well, it looks like I'm going to save alot of money now.

All I can say is that Panini makes crappy soccer cards and we decide to buy Futera soccer cards instead... Im so disappointed but hopefully we see amazing things with Panini but if Panini are going to be like the Select company like in Australia, I'll be saving to buy older stuff.

this may be the last ud exquisite year eh? man that sucks.. not that I'm against Panini and all but I love ud exquisite and ud black.. hope panini can get some thick cards of high quality

15 to 20 products a season sounds great.

but i just see the 1 manufacturer rule being crap for the hobby. competition brings out the best in people and a monopoly is not competition.

Seriously guys, the sky is not falling...

Years before UD ever existed, Topps were the sole producers...and did a great job. In the mid 80's, we didn't even have a standard producer (Star were really just arena sales). The hobby has survived for this long, but if people want to over sell the companies involvement in the hobby (their over production of GU and auto, chipping on high end products such as UD Black, using retired stars to drive sales rather than the new generation, etc, etc) and form an opinion on a product that doesn't yet exist, then that will be great for those of us that stay - hopefully a few gems in PCs are liquidated following this announcement (JP - if you are one of those, I'll take your 1/1 Worthys!! :D )

Make up a bonox, lie down with a cool facewasher and take a deep breath...the sun will come up tomorrow.

hey hey

all i can say is i cant wait to see what they bring out

they've got the $$ and now the backing to bring out some stuff that will change the direction of the hobby forever

and finally we'll almost be able to stop complaining about the sh*t UD products and service

cant see this being the worst thing to happen. Could make exisiting UD and Topps cards value increase which will be good. I for one was going to be selling my cards, but think I will hold off now and see the impact this has....

also should make redemptions interesting......

Will Upper Deck still do Memorabilia with autographs, they have a great Patented 5-step process and great camera pen technology and a good database sometimes not up to date but its good. This bring out great autographed and game used items on jerseys, balls, shoes etc, I know their other companies like sterner sports and mounted memories which they have signing days etc and PSA-DNA and GAI but grading companies are good when buying older stuff not new stuff, i gathered. I like the memorabilia that upper deck does with basketball I hope it does effect them in this department.

Wow, big news! I can't wait to see whats in store, it'll bring a new wind to the hobby.

But I'm not sure about 15-20 products a season from just one manufacturer..?
