BREAKING NEWS! UD & Topps Out:Panini offically In!

makes sense in a way, panini has much better market penentration from the US externally, it can open new revenue streams for the NBA globally, but the most important question remains whether they can capture 100% of the existing NBA collectors in the US, since they represent easily more than 60% of total card sales.

Some might choose to buy of older stuff to fill out the old wantlist instead of going on new things. But like Chad said, it is not like Panini is a backyard job.....they are heavyweight producers like UD and Topps, so it will be good to see what comes of this.

Sorry Ry, it's serious, check all the websites...

Yeah I know - im just shocked.

To me UD means the premium sh.t.

Panini means wierd Euro releases.

I really love UD products and more recently I have opened up to Topps and Bowman etc etc.

Im just sad that we wont have UD anymore.

I will probably be proven wrong, but I just dont see Panini producing anything like what we have become accustomed to.

Its gonna be wierd!

Ry

Yeah we might see something different rather than the same designs recycled year in year out!

You serious Roger? Without MJ i don't think products will sell as well now. We want Mike in the long run.

YOU want Mike in the long run. As a MJ fanatic and collector even I can see the Hobby is saturated with his stuff. If you cant even remotly see this you my friend are worse then a blind rat that can't smell.

Hear hear! lol...and we all know that Ray is on Jordan's nuts quicker than a starving squirrel dying from hunger.

This is great news IMO. The hobby needed a shake up.

Hopefully we have seen the last of the ridiculous amount of 1/1's, parallels, sticker auto's and ugly worthless gu's.

Good news!So they might be able to get some player exclusive's from UD afterall. Check this Q&A out:
FCB: What can collectors expect from your high end products? In the past
products like UD exquisite has drawn much praise from the international
basketball card market, and has been regarded as the best product in
basketball cards over the years. Will Panini produce similar game used
patch as we have seen on the market in the past 7 or so years?

LG: We plan on offering a variety of products from high-end cards to products
for the mass retailers. We intend to offer game-worn patch cards, autograph
cards and other special cards.

FCB: Does Topps/UD retain their exclusive contracts with their players (Shaq,
Kobe, Lebron, MJ, KG etc...)? If so, how successful can a product be
without autos and jerseys of all of these players?

LG: Panini cards will still include these elements. We are working with Topps
and Upper Deck on the specifics related to their exclusive player deals.

FCB: Will the autographs be signed directly on the card, or will you use sticker
based autographs?

LG: We expect to use a combination of directly signed card, as well as sticker
autographs.

FCB: What is your stance on redemption cards?

LG: We do not plans to have redemptions in a product, but sometimes due to
player scheduling it is unfortunately unavoidable when trying to procure
autographs.

FCB: Will you use your current company name to market products in the US, or
will you switch to a more US friendly marketing strategy?

LG: Panini will open a U.S. subsidiary in the U.S. Panini is a well-respected
global company and we’re confident that the considerable marketing and
promotional support they are planning to put behind NBA trading cards will
give us the opportunity to cultivate a new generation of fans. Panini has a
proven track record of opening and growing new markets throughout Europe
and Latin America and will apply its successful international growth
strategies in the U.S. to help us grow our domestic trading card business.

i think it's sad that the card business will be monopolised by 1 company. this is worse than having topps and upper deck as the 2 card companies.

Sad for card dealers too hehe. I'm wondering how many customers there gonna to lose over one poor decision.

We should start a petition to boycott these pieces of crap.

That doesn't make any sense. And who are the pieces of crap you refer to? The NBA?

Anyway...not sure if this has been asked yet, but what does this mean for current redemption products? Are Topps and UD still going to honour redemptions...do they have any good reason to anymore???

Thats just an idiot post. I'll come out and just say what most would think here.

How can you say this when we haven't even seen the product and product list.

Take that as an insult if you want but really how can you call it crap just yet? We ALL have to reserve judgement on the final product for now and only comment on what 'may' happen or could happen.

Take off the blinkers and think of the hobby as more than one retired over marketed player

They are still involved in other sports (may get back into basketball eventually) so i can't see them alienating collectors. Especially since the collector hasn’t done anything directly to cause the change (although their buying habits may have)

can we safely say this is pretty much for our collecting hobby? Panini sucks a$$. i dont understand the NBA. How beckett and the nba can say that it will rejuvinate golbal collecting is bullsh!t. it wont do anything but decrease the amount of collectors. can you see people like Tim (exquisite collector) ersk, et al going after Panini? come off it!! no one will want to touch it. one company making cards is stupid. its not the end of upperdeck or topps though. i think panini will outsource the contract to UD and topps for ideas etc
