Buyers shipping heated discussion.

I still can't figure out why our most often posted thread is "postage rip off"

Still I see posts saying that a seller demands such and such for postage and then people win cards and then bitch about it costing less or coming cheaper than the shipping quote.

Whats so hard about either contacting the seller PRIOR to the auction or simply just factoring in the cost of the higher shipping if they don't budge.

YES it does suck that some want to simply profit from shipping and handling and that we nearly always get ripped value wise but some buyers just bring it on themselves. Some sellers are asses and some just don't know better.

Some combined shipping sucks even if its only a $1 extra per card IF you look at the postage on the mailer. But if you buy those same cards individually then I garantee you that you wont get each shipped for a $1 in a bubble mailer.

If all else fails I'll sum up if I really want to pay it or wait for the next one. I don't HAVE to make a purchase and have the choice IF I think about it BEFORE the auction. But if you get the card cheaper then its a non issue. If you have been searching for ages for a card you REALLY want then I say $7 is a non issue. Most would use that in gas just driving to the shops to simply get more material things for ourselves and home and don't bitch about that or see "oil prices ruin great prices at Bunnings!"

hahaha awesome rant/thread! I'm one that always contacts prior unless, as you say, it's a card I really want then I don't care much as long as it arrives!

PS: You have all been charged for my time and hot Milo I had when writing it seeing none of you bothered to clear with me what my costs were for posting :p

I agree on the level that if you buy/win a card relatively cheap, and postage is a few bucks more than average, then sure, it's still a bargin.

I also agree that if it's something you REALLY want, postage is not a factor, so long as it arrives as advertised.

What I DO hate, is when sellers state that inflated postage costs are due to their time and money spent on listing/selling the card, gas/travel to the post office, standing in line for an hour, just to post "my" card....

THEY'RE the ones selling the f-cking thing, they DO know what is involved in completing their end of the transaction, so why not inflate their starting prices, rather than bullshitting about postage fees......

My end Rand.

That's nominated for OZcard worst joke of the year.

Do agree though mate - I generally try to contact and say it costs $3-4 but it's up to the them- and they usually say - it'll be $5!!!

Its about time that one of the Mods say something about this...

If we knew the cost of the postage before we bid then why would we worry (or even bring it up here) when we received the envelope and seeing that they only pay 90 cents for the stamps...

Maybe we need to train ourselves to not look at the stamps when we receive the envelope... Man, its worst when you dont get the card... That's when I think we should get pissed off! :)

Agreed! Now I know the shipping costs back to front, I don;t get caught with that label stuff anyhow. Only time I check genuinely now is like when a high end card i bought a few months back arrived via $0.90 regular postage stating value at $15 when I got quoted for and paid for $15 Registered + Insurance! I didn;t even get the insurance cause the value was really $200+!
But as long as I get what I actually asked for and paid for, I have no issues cause I always finalise a shipping cost days before auction end.

And then like you said, as long as it arrives

Couldn't agree more.

Everyone complains how much they pay, but if the reverse happened ie you were charged $10 for s&h but the postage was actually $20 (i'm talking more about boxes than singles), would you email the seller and say i owe you more the shipping?

I know I do (being more of a seller than a buyer these days) and 100% of the time they have said don't worry about it.

You can't have the cake and eat it too.

I think you shouldn't pay more than $5 for regular s&h anyway, so no point in whinging about it if they charge more.

Just get them back when you sell something. I do.

Charge $A7.50 and most of the time it costs $1.10-$1.95

Also as I always say it's not what you say but how you say it.

If you ask the sellers nicely, most will accomodate you, and if they don't give them the one finger salute. :fist:

Buy elsewhere :)

I always make a contradicting comment when someone complains about the shipping costs that overseas sellers charge... One of the main reason why I dont worry about the postage cost (if I ended up bidding) is because I am just grateful that they sell to us.

Has anyone got this reply from a US seller when you asked if they will post to Australia? "No we don't send to your country anymore because of past problems..." There seem to be more and more of these sellers...

What we really should do is encouraged them to send to us... ;)

:) I would like to share some of my own rules before bidding:

1. Look at the sellers feedback Rating... Look at their transactions in the last few months...

2. Always look at the postage cost... If I think its too high, I'll e-mail the seller and ask if the postage is for regular or registered. Or if he/she can lower it for me... I will never ask and accused them of over charging coz most of the time they will block you and you wont be able to bid or they will just say I wont send to Australia anymore... Just think of the consequences before you accuse them...

3. Also important to see if they accept Paypal (overseas sellers)... I don't like winning an auction and finding out that the seller doesn't accept Paypal... I've lost a money order once in transit and never used it again...

4. Do I have money to pay for it... (this one is just common sense  )

That happened to me... The seller charges me $30 for shipping but he paid $45... I had a look at the stamp that time coz I had a feeling that he will be paying more.. Thought of e-mailing him but have forgotten about it until now.

you make some excellent points gemini

If they don't state they ship to OZ, I always say:

"Hi, do you ship internationally? I am from Australia and very intersted in your auction(s). From previous experiences of buying over the last x yrs, I find the shipping normally ranges from $1-$6 depending on the method and weight. You can also check my feedback I have over 500+ and am a reliable buyer. PLMK either way and thanks for your time".

If they don't want to ship here then i guess that's their loss.

I always thank them for their time too, seems to make a difference.

I can honestly say in over 8 yrs of dealing with 100s of sellers on eBay I've had a real problem with about 5, and mostly due to not receiving my cards.

Coincidence???

Got a parcel yesterday and the seller paid $24.60 for postage... He only charge me $20...

I e-mailed him about it and asked if he wants the difference. So let's see what he says... I'll post his reply... :)

Here's his reply:
Hey thanks for sending me the message. Yea when I went to the post office I did not know heavy items were that expensive lol. But since I quoted you $20 I didn't want to ask you to send the extra $5.00. If you want to that would be greatly appreciated to even out the cost for shipping but don't feel obligated. And I really appreciate the consideration and if you do feel like sending the extra $5.00 here is the paypal addy just in case you don't have it *******************.

Glad you got the package safely and very fast, Thanks again.

So I'll send him the difference. Not a problem....

The auction is originally for US only but the seller was willing to send the item to Australia after I asked him politely as "sashsquach" said.

What I want members here to see is that we should try to convince more US sellers that Aussies are good buyers... If we will be able to do that then only us will benifit from it... :)
