I was one of those kids who got caught up in basketball cards during the 90's and the addiction has never really gone away.. I mean it's been suppressed for periods of time, but I've just found myself back into it again at the beginning of this year.
All it took was a box of Upper Deck 94-95 S1 that my uncle had lying around, and gave me to open, to re-ignite the passion again. I've now dropped a fair amount of money ($$$$'s) since Jan but I'm back in control.. somewhat
As a kid, my uncle owned a collectibles shop in the northern suburbs of Melbourne and that's where it all began.. I'd play basketball at the local stadium Saturday morning and take a drive with dad after the game to my uncle's store to pick up some packs. My brother always pulled the redemption cards and better inserts, but it didn't matter.. just opening the packs was the real excitement for me.
As I got older and my uncle closed his shop, money priorities went elsewhere and other than a few odd purchases here and there, I didn't buy cards anymore. Anytime I did want to go back to purchasing, the most difficult thing was finding somewhere buy them (apart from ebay).
When I started looking at products/prices to buy again this year, I had no idea how pricey they were, or that Panini now has a massive market share. I'm not even sure Panini were around last time I bought anything.. anyways I decided to try my luck and buy direct from the US (with great success - much cheaper even with International freight).
So now finally to my point, I watched a shite-load box breaks to get an idea about the sorts of cards you can pull from each product I was interested in, then realised, how come none of these companies doing the box breaks are from Aus? So I figure, why the hell not, maybe I could do it.
So I'm now placing the feelers out there to see if people are interested in buying in with a Melbourne based box/case breaker and what kinds of products people are interested in. I'm still doing a bit of research into how breaks are conducted, the tech involved to live stream them, rules, shipping/postage rates, pricing the slots for customers etc.
But for now, I'm looking to help Aus collectors get involved with more affordable options and maybe buy the odd box or two for myself.
