Best player in the AFL today?

Sam Mitchell best player in the comp without a doubt.
Big call! I'd say there's definitely some doubt there.

For mine, it's hard to go past Dangerfield at the moment. He's one of those players who as an opposition supporter, you're worried about for the whole game due to his ability to change the game in five minutes (e.g. Start of the second quarter versus Port Adelaide a few weeks back).

No biggie at all!!
Only a consistent player that game by game, year by year that has more coaches worried every week how they are going to stop him from getting his hands on the footy so much.
There is no other player than can extract like our man Mitchell.

Indeed, Mitchell might be the best extractor in the game (although Priddis would certainly challenge for that title)! But calling him the "best player in the comp without a doubt" is probably going a bit too far ;)

Feel like Lachie Neale gets overlooked in these conversations. Think he's current #1 for disposals and contested ball.

I'm bias so I'd too say Sam Mitchell. But if I was to pick one player from any other team right now it would be Danger. In 2 years time we could be calling the Bont best in the league.

Mitchell is so far ahead in this it's simply no contest. Not only does he get opposition coaches worried, it would appear they have given up trying to contain him, such is his consistent domination.

Dangerfield can only hope to one day be as good.

Seems like this thread may be done and dusted.:p
And the naysayer may see the error in his way. ;)

Thing for me that gives danger the chocolates is that he can out mark most, be a dangerous key forward, explode from a contest, extract like the best and chase down nearly anyone. That to me says best player in the comp.

Wouldn't say coaches have given up.

I'm sure old Gil had a word to the coaches about 'attractive" football.

Apart from Ben Jacobs you'll barely see a tagger in the comp these days.

No doubting Sam is a gun.

Luke Parker is easily the best , Dangerfield is a bash and crash and isn't defensive at all .Mitchell butcher's the football.

I wouldn't be sure Sam Mitchell is even the best player at Hawthorn! Yes, he is dependable and fiercely competitive and racks up 40 with rare ease but I'd pick Shaun Burgoyne first, any day of the week. Plays almost anywhere and you just know when Clarkson needs something done, it's Burgoyne he goes to.

After Parker, I'd take Jeremy Cameron. And I agree, Lachie Neale could nearly be anything.

Don't get me wrong, I completely respect Mitchell (as I said in another thread he should be a Brownlow medallist). I just don't think that he has the X-Factor that you generally need to be the best player in the comp.

Think about the last few players who have held this title (as per the general consensus of footy fans). Last year Fyfe, before him Ablett, before him Judd, Carey, Ablett Snr, Leigh Matthews, etc. In my opinion Mitchell is missing something all those players have/had. In general, it's hard to be regarded as the best player if you're solely an inside midfielder. Hence why I think that right now Dangerfield is the best player, with Parker probably a close second.

I've got Coniglio ahead of Cameron at GWS

Thread needs to be retitled best midfielder in the game.

Goldstein and Rance would be as valuable to their respective teams as any of the players listed above.
