NRL Rumour Mill Thread (Spoilers)

Hell yeah it does, I'm not having a cry about it, nor was I on Sunday. The fact that I support the team is irrelevant in this instance. I'm posing it as a question in response to the thread discussion about players serving bans the length of their victims. I'm interested in what others think about the issue within the NRLs rules; should it keep happening to teams in the future?

18th man should be available for such instances

i have always believed that the player responsible for injuring another player due to foul play and the injured player has 3 weeks off for the injury, the responsible player should have, AT MINIMUM, the same amount of time out of the game...

Nope can't do it.

Scenario: Jonathan Thurston illegally tackles James Hasson (Supercoach gun) in Rnd 24, Toovey knows he's playing the Cowboys Week1 of the Semi's do you think Hasson would be back before that game?

18th man should be available for such instances
This is the answer IMO

Cheers
Ross

I can see what you are saying but if it was all put into fruition the Judiciary would have a Separate Non club aligned Doctor in the works somewhere i would imagine to give his prognosis on the injury etc ??

Players and coaches already bend the rules to breaking point so any harsh penalty (ie send off) would be surely abused by teams . Why give the referees an opportunity to really stuff up a game with a hasty send off for an incident that really isn't there? They already have trouble with adjudicating on minor infringements and show that they consistently get it wrong so I reckon it would be stupid to give the refs enough rope to really hang themselves.

I agree..... I ilke the 18th man idea But it wouldn't surprise me if teams had players go down with concussion late in games to bring on a fresh player.

Bring back the one game, one doctor like we had at park footy then let the club doctors have a look maybe ???

I tell you what I'd like to see:

  1. Refs reffing the actual rule book and none of this friendly banter with players.
  2. Indiscretions inside the 20m - the penalised player has to stand back in goal and wait out the set of six before being allowed to rejoin the play.
  3. 5 minute sin bin for repeated infringements.
  4. 10 minute sin bin.
  5. Send offs for foul play.
  6. On report taken out of refs hands and done by the post-match review panel. A proper post-match review panel and no BS.
  7. No wishy washy BS (refer 1). None of this player steps off the mark and gets told to go back and play the ball.
  8. Back to one controlling referee; 4 touch judges (2 on each side for both attack and defence) and in-goal judges. A central bunker with 3 isolated video refs who decide in 60 seconds if it is a try or not. Best of three gets the decision.
  9. When ref goes to video refs - he clearly states what he wants: grounding; off side, etc. That way they don't go back to the kick and check all the other BS for other reasons if the on field refs are happy but just want to check grounding.

Oh, and a team in Perth.

I agree with most of these, they should have the ability to sin bin someone for 5 minutes and use it.

One thing that also annoys me a bit is the placement of the scrums and turn overs. If I find touch 2 metres out I want the scrum 2 metres out not out 10 metres and in 20 meters. If I knock on 5 metres form the sideline I want the scrum there not in 20 metres. They said it was done to open up both sides of the field for attack but really it is just too predictable, scrums in a variety of places means a short blind or a massive open side....anyway rant over

Apparently, wayyyyy back in the 1987 Grand Final coach of Manly Bob Fulton exploited the 'head bin' laws of the time to run Canberra ragged on a hot day utilising Paul Shaw as a Super Sub!.

I wouldn't mind seeing 'real' scrums. Not the RU style but at least not a lean in.

Also, the NRL needs to challenge clubs to get out of this mindset of dull footy. There are so many rules to exploit, but a generation of coaches like Sheens, Smith, Bennett and Gould wanted low-percentage plays, minimal errors and to coached a lot of the 'instinct' and had rule change put in to suck the life out of the game. If something was in the game that made it exciting and against the grain, you can be sure they found a way to nullify it or have it nullified in a negative way. And Sheens, Smith and Bennett have begat us the next generation of coaches who are too scared to allow flair to rule because if they lose in an exciting way, it's their head on the chopping block.

I'm sorry I'm on a soap box but it really annoys me that tweaks aren't made to better the game, to make it positive. Hell, I can distinctly remember the last time a deep set, long sweeping back line was used and it was Penrith a couple of years ago and they scored because the defence had NFI how to defend against depth and bodies in motion.

Come on NRL! Excite us again and feck off the wrestle and 5 up and kick.

You speak of DEPTH, How would i Get this message to Tony SHE-REX Williams???

People always say to me - why can't Friend/Luke/Ennis/Farah/Smith etc not pass it backwards from dummy half. Well…compressed, flat attacks are to blame. Hell, you hardly see forwards run on to the ball except for a kick restart.
