The St George Illawarra Dragons have today announced that second-rower Will Matthews has agreed to terms a one-year contract extension that will see him remain at the Club until at least the end of 2014.
The Kyogle Turkeys junior has played ten first-grade games for the Red V since his arrival from the Gold Coast Titans in 2012 and has played 43 NRL games in total to date.
Matthews, 25, has been a key part of the Illawarra Cutters in the NSW Cup this season and was this year rewarded with selection to the NSW Cup Representative Team.
“I am pleased to have come to terms and remain with the Dragons, I really enjoy being a part of the Club and in the Wollongong area so am really happy to know that I can stay for at least another season," said Matthews.
“The Club has recruited strongly for next season and I look forward to working hard in the pre-season giving myself the best opportunity to push for a regular place in the NRL team next year".
Furthermore, the Dragons have additionally announced that forward Matt Groat has agreed to a one-year contract that will see him join the Club until at least the end of 2014.
The two-time Australia Schoolboy prop (2010-11) is presently contracted to Wests Tigers and has played 17 first-grade NRL games to date.
The St Gregory’s College, Campbelltown junior is originally from the Riverina area has previously been named in the Young Kangaroos (2011) and NSW Blues U20 State of Origin team (2012).
"Matt is a great guy who will fit in really well at the Dragons," said Dragons prop Jack Stockwell.
"We were at school together at St Greg's and were lucky enough to play some representative football together in recent years so I'm really looking forward to playing with him again next year.
"He has had some back luck with injuries but I know that he is definitely keen to work hard and is looking forward to joining us in the pre-season."
Groat will join the Dragons in November along with Josh Ailaomai (Sydney Roosters); Mike Cooper (Warrington Wolves); Dylan Farrell (South Sydney Rabbitohs); Peter Mata’utia (Newcastle Knights); Joel Thompson (Canberra Raiders); Gareth Widdop (Melbourne Storm) and Sam Williams (Canberra Raiders).
