2013/14 Ashes non Official thread !!

I've followed cricket pretty closely for about 23 years now. It doesn't make me an expert by any stretch, but it has allowed me to watch the tail end of the "home umpires" era, the start of the "neutral umpires" era, the introduction of 3rd umpire adjudications on line (stumpings and run-outs) decisions and of course the Decision Review System.

In it's present form, the DRS is flawed in so many ways that it has made international cricket near-enough a secondary sport in regards to professionalism. The sport is in danger of becoming irrelevant if it continues to rely on a system which a. relies on inexact assumptions (Hawkeye), b. is used primarily as a TACTIC by the players (eg Shane Watson) and c. cannot be relied upon to correct obvious on-field mistakes (such as in Stuart Broad's case at Trent Bridge).

Totally agree. Sometimes it is hard to fight technology so I think that DRS should be taken out if the payers hands and used solely By the umpires. If an obvious mistake has been made then the third umpire should be able to tell the on field umpires to reverse it, simple (unless you were the third umpire from last night)

NOT liking DRS at the moment.......
Am liking the Aussies putting up a good fight so far in the game, and Clarke has set up the innings nicely - and Warner to come in with a great foundation already laid. They just need to give the poms a sniff, as a draw does nothing for the Aussies; the poms will retain the ashes on a drawn game. Aussies have to set the tempo.
Poms looked a little ragged when they took the 2nd new ball, Jimmy A's looking a bit flat and Broad was put off by the footholds opening up. He bowled so well without luck; Smith was plumb - no reviews left... - and numerous play and misses. The 200th wicket is becoming a bit of an albatross for him.
Should be an enjoyable day later tonight.:)

There have been people like Rebecca Wilson (puhlease!) who have openly questioned Michael Clarke's ability to be either a good leader or a good team man, or both...........give me a spell!!

It was interesting to hear Michael Vaughan say that he thinks that Clarke is the best right-hand batsman in world cricket against Graham Swann, and it was great to watch him bat last night. He is in my opinion our best player of spin since Greg Chappell and when in full flight it is pretty to watch.

Warner certainly thought so........why didn't Clarke tell him he'd snicked it - had Warner already gone for the review before consulting with pup?
Loved Bumble's comments on the TV when Warner came in (to a lot of booing, I noticed...) He said he's a punchy player and a fighter!!

great bit of running there

What is Clarke thinking? Jogged the first run, which is something they're NEVER supposed to do, then Smith is running to the danger end anyway and would have been safe. The throw was not close to the stumps. Poor Smith.

Now can we get enough overs in tomorrow to win? It's supposed to pee down.

What a bummer. Play should start early though but I think the rain is gonna beat us here.

Could have been 4 down if Clarke had latched onto that chance.... he was a bit slow getting ready as the bowler was coming in - looked a bit rushed and snatched at it....still, 3 down and wonder how long the next rain band will take to arrive?? Poms are in strife without a good dump of the wet stuff.
