2013/14 Ashes non Official thread !!

khwaga did play well. he is a good number 3 so that's that problem solved. Watson is no opening batsman he's stats suggest this. he should be used as a all rounder but will you get the overs out of him? Clarke should bat 4 , hughes 5 and smith or Watson 6. Australia need to find a opening bat badly because the rogers experiment is not working and he's 35. Watson has scored 2 centuries in 42 matches, yes he is a good choice for opening the batting for the ODI matches but not the test squad. he can't be relied as a opener. warner has scored 3 centuries from 19 matches and he averages just under 40 so get him in asap. drop rogers for warner or drop Watson for warner. one of them has to go. bowling wise there is no problem but gaz lyon would get more turn then agar.

I agree with you on most of this. Rogers has been unlucky though. That pie he copped was terrible to get out on. He should stay, he knows his game. Just copped a pie and then great bowling from Swanny. He's 35 though so only a short term prospect, maybe 2 years. Watson is killing me, if he doesn't bowl he's out of the side. Looks great until he gets to 20 - 30.

Lyon def in. Also Jackson Bird should get a game, Patto is not going well, he may have to have a rest even though usually he's our best bowler.

Warner is a pretty risky player and with Rogers I think he could be good. But the young NSW guys are just not patient enough and are too hit n miss. Warner, Hughes, Khawaja and Smith are all highly talented but I think we can only afford to have 2 of them in the side right now. Need more consistency.

Well, that was a fair smacking - and another 3 Tests to go.....Imagine how abject the Aussies would be without the massive batting contributions by 8, 9, 10, Jack; gee, they have to do a shedload of bowling and then pull the recognised batsmen out of a pickle time and time again - just look at the scores when Oz are 3-for, it is usually under 100....
Start wielding the axe, selectors: Watto: gone. Not up to it. Technique sets him up for LBW, just a matter of time before he plays all around a straight one. Won't ever score a 100 against good bowling attacks. Get Warner in to open, can't be any worse that Watto, surely. Haddin looks to have lost confidence, at least 2 catches missed when he and first slip both look at each other as the ball goes past, and a couple others didn't stick in the gloves; plus a stack of byes were let through.
They've got 10 days to think about it; hope someone puts a broom through the team- and a rocket up 'em......I mean, how much are the senior players getting?? Start earning your big $$$, lads.

Bird should have flown the nest from game 1 !

Remember just one thing everyone, Australian cricket is in a rebuilding process and this will take time. The next big question/point of debate is who will take over when pup is gone? His continued back issues won't see him playing the next 4+ years, infact we could be lucky to get 2 more out of him.

The argument of t20 will remain for a long time, does too much cricket at a slog fest have an impact on the battle of tests? Yes is the simple answer. Why did pup have an incredible 2012? He refrained from the shorter version of T20 and built him himself mentally and physically strong to play tests ... Maybe a few others could take a leaf? Test cricket is a battle made up of many wars, some you loose some you win, but overall it's how you rebound and learn from your mistakes !

Boof will teach them the art, watch this space:)

Lol we have been in a rebuilding phase already for quite a while. And it's not getting better anytime soon, at least in terms of batting.

T20 does have an effect i think but it's more just to do with the quality of the batsmen. Batsmen from other countries seem to be able to make runs in tests better than us and they play T20 too.

As the umpy had given it out, the 3rd ump has to be 100% certain to overrule the onfield ump. There were noises, yes, and the ball was very close to the edge, so on field call has to stay - and had it been given not out, and England wanted to review, then the poms would have lost a review, as there isn't enough evidence to show he hit it.......that's the way it operates. Snicko is irrelevent, and is only used for the commentators post mortems - Warney sure frothed didn't he???
The other batsman out was no surprise....he gets a start, then goes home early.....

The ball was very close to the edge? Haha best laugh I've had all week

Yes the ball was close to the edge but clearly missed it. No hot spot, snicko irrelevant but noise occurred before the ball reached him. If there was ever significant evidence to overturn a decision that was it, what a joke. DRS wasn't the issue, a dud third umpire was

WTF are you watching?

There was 20mm of air between bat and ball and no hot spot.

I've followed cricket pretty closely for about 23 years now. It doesn't make me an expert by any stretch, but it has allowed me to watch the tail end of the "home umpires" era, the start of the "neutral umpires" era, the introduction of 3rd umpire adjudications on line (stumpings and run-outs) decisions and of course the Decision Review System.

In it's present form, the DRS is flawed in so many ways that it has made international cricket near-enough a secondary sport in regards to professionalism. The sport is in danger of becoming irrelevant if it continues to rely on a system which a. relies on inexact assumptions (Hawkeye), b. is used primarily as a TACTIC by the players (eg Shane Watson) and c. cannot be relied upon to correct obvious on-field mistakes (such as in Stuart Broad's case at Trent Bridge).

Aussies are looking pretty good so far, poms are out of reviews too....
Seeing the new ground work, why did they paint the stands dark red??
Smiths not out was a bit puzzling, what made the noise? My first thought was a scrape along the ground - no - and it didn't seem to be in sync with the edge of the bat, so where did it come from? Good decision by the ump there, but it won't bring Khawaja back, though.

I thought the sound came from his back foot sliding?
