The Ashes - 1st Test - Offical Thread

same here i thought were going for the kill but it seems ponting's decision can really hurt australia on the next test match. by giving england to redeem themselves on their bowling and get a few quick wickets it boost their confidence going thru the next test match which is not the best thing to do atm.

There is a reason for this, in my opinion.... you send england in again they manage to scratch themselves 100 lead.... we have to bat on THAT wicket on day 5 we could lose or suffer a draw.... he is getting second bat out of the way now to give bowlers a chance to breathe and rest.... and to get a few more runs... then have two days to bowl england out - makes perfect sense given the pitch and the heat.

perhaps ur right but what if they bowl well and bat well which gives them a really big boost on the next test match. we have to keep england confidence as low as we can so we can keep that momentum all the way to adelaide. but if both openers can score really fast without losing a wicket it will be a nice result for us as well.

ooooh AJ - I gotta disagree. I can understand that tactic if we have a lead of 250 odd. But we already have this game in the bag and by batting again we are just giving England a better chance of batting out for a draw. Right or wrong decision we should end up winning anyway :)

well they ain't bowled well yet LOL Ponting may be kind and declare overnight, more likely he'll come out and try bash his way to another ton and let Langer try score one of his own..... then declare.... England are gonna be mentally shot... in a way its nice and cruel....

I heard the reason for not making England follow on was so that Cricket Australia wouldnt have to refund the Day 4 tickets.

Cricket Australia sent representatives to the Aussie team meeting in the morning - something they dont usually do =/

They will declare 10 over before lunch tomorrow. Ponting will have gone the tonk and have 100 by then and langer will too :D.....hopefully anyway ;)

There were so many more reasons to bat again...and as for going in for the kill....have you ever watched a cat toy with a mouse?? It's all about psychology. They are already demoralised after 2 hot days in the field...then bowled out for 150-odd on a supposed belter. If they bat again they get a chance to stay together as a team in the rooms and re-group...put them back in the field, where you spend most of the day on your own having negative thoughts. This generally has an impact for the rest of the series. (Mind you we won the 1st Test in England last year and still lost the series.)
You are also ensuring they have to face Warnie on a day 4/5 minefield.

I doubt this is true...they may have had a reps at the team meeting but at that stage England were only 3 down...I don't think the CA reps (or too many other people) could have predicted they'd be bowled out so cheaply even with the position they were in.

They would have looked at scenarios. When I was told, I doubted it was true, but i think its all possible. It sounds like something Cricket Australia would do :D

Yes it does sound like something they would do....and I'm all for it because I've got to sell advertising into the cricket...the longer it goes for the better!!:D

Not likely Gemz, the Punter wants the pitch on the last day - For Warney !

If Cricket Australia made a decision based on the coffers and forced that upon the team... I think I would change teams and start barracking for South Africa.

That would make me absolutely sick as a cricket fan and thsoe peopel in the media that suggested it need shooting.

It's psychology and its bloody good psychology!

i was driving in my car on saturday listening to the cricket on the ABC radio station and they reckoned australia would bat again because players get some of the money from ticket sales.and they reckon cricket australia would put pressure on the aussie's to bat again to generate ticket sales did anyone else hear this report ?
i think why give the pom's even a vague chance i am quite sure they would not give us a chance after all are we not trying to win the ashes back

I don't think that would be the reason at all !

I actually agree with his decision to bat again.....they won with 3/4 of a day to spare so no skin of my nose - Well done Aussies !

well the 2nd test has a mirror image of the 2nd test in england.
england 551/6 declared wid around 10 overs remaining on the 2nd day.

That pitch is flat as! England should have had more than 551 nearing the end of day 2, they should have been way over 600...This test is headed towards a draw!

i hope so mate but it all depends on our batting i just hope we can bat the game toward a draw. this pitch is really rubbish and i dont know why they made it like that.

exactly!! i was starting to think the same thing nearing the end of play yesterday!! all the commentators are saying its a 'batters' pitch' and yet the poms were dragging arse!!

if the aussies can hold strong and not fall to this reverse swing that the aussies were starting to get then this when be a draw for sure!!
