Anyone else sick of collecting MJs?

I have collected MJ for years and finally threw my hands up in disgust about 6 months or so ago. I refuse. Not only are the prices ridiculous, but you can't trust the ending price of 99% of these auctions either. Check the bid history of that Playmaker auction - shilled, shilled, shilled. Shady. Anyone paying these prices is crazy.

forget about the prixe on that one, it isn't even an official release one. it would never seen light of day if it wasn't for the fleer bankrupcy auctions.

If I had a bunch of 90's inserts of Jordan I'd be selling up and investing in his Exquisite cards. There's probably only a select bunch that will continue to go up like the PMG's and Playmakers Theatre (legit version) and so on.

I would not touch those prices going around.

LOL i didn't think we needed a list of MJs acheivements to know he is a great player

In anycase, it would appear that the buyer is an aussie.

Does anyone know him? It would be nice to warn him before he pays for this flaeer auction card (potential fake printed outside like the 1985 star card, but I would guess BGS should be able to spot it, but who knows when they mislable it).

One should have more trust in high-end-buyers, that these guys know what they do.

Dont get me wrong, i think the price for the non-pack-included Playmakers Theatre /100 is too high as well. But just look at what the buyer recently bought:
Lebron RC - 2.300 USD
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trksid=p4340.l2557&item=290710276830&nma=true&rt=nc&si=%2B%2FdyeONeI583Qq%2BywN9hMMF8bxs%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc
Durant RC - 3.300 USD

Durant 1/1 - 2.600 USD
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trksid=p4340.l2557&item=290710273092&nma=true&rt=nc&si=%2B%2FdyeONeI583Qq%2BywN9hMMF8bxs%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc
Durant RC - 500 USD
You cant really see the items bought from another US-seller, because those auctions were made private. But judging from the sellers recent high-end sales that looks like another 8.000 USD spent.
So, quick math
Jordan non-pack Theatre /100 - 5.000 USD
+ above best offer purchases - 8.700 USD
+ estimated private auctions from US-seller - 8.000 USD
-------------------------------------------------------------
= 21.700 USD (over the past week)

That figure maybe a yearly income for some of us. Yet still, there are millions (!!!) of people in the world commanding that money on a monthly basis. And these people think different. They are not thinking and investing like the billions of us with a 21.700 USD (or so) annual income. They invest different and most of them for good reason.

To answer the original question: No, not at all. More fun then ever before.
ANY price movement is not going to change that. Take the 2 extreme sides:
1. Prices drop by 90%: will try to buy as many MJ 90s dream cards as possible, first and foremost, his AUs and rare limited inserts and parallels
2. Prices continue to rise: will continue to enjoy the collection and add selectively

One should have more trust in high-end-buyers, that these guys know what they do.

it is not even embossed or numbered to 100 that is two big problems. Surely a ruich fool can't be that foolish?

Thats your opinion, Cobretti. I respect and to an extent agree, except for the foolish part. Because, on average, rich people are very well educated. And maybe the buyer thinks, that 5k is a steal, who knows ? Its still a BGS 10, making this card a 1/1 Jordan 90s, derived from one of the most hunted series of the 90s, that nobody else owns in such quality...

Again, if i commanded that much money, i would not want to pay 5k for this card, as i prefer the original pack-included version.
But on the other hand, have seen stranger pricing examples in the past. And on many i have been proven wrong, because prices for the cards i doubted kept soaring.

Even today, i am surprised on a DAILY basis, about the prices collectors pay for players i rarely ever heard about. Some examples:
1955/56 Parkhurst Tim Horton high grade - 12.100 USD
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trksid=p4340.l2557&hash=item2ebcea972f&item=200737986351&nma=true&pt=US_Hockey_Trading_Cards&rt=nc&si=%2B%2FdyeONeI583Qq%2BywN9hMMF8bxs%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc
1915 Cracker Jack Christy Mathewson high grade - 10.251 USD
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trksid=p4340.l2557&hash=item3f17115eed&item=270969954029&nma=true&pt=US_Baseball&rt=nc&si=%2B%2FdyeONeI583Qq%2BywN9hMMF8bxs%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc
1911 T206 Piedmont Tobacco-Sherry Magee Error Card PSA 2.5 - 9.106 USD
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trksid=p4340.l2557&hash=item564a087956&item=370609256790&nma=true&pt=US_Baseball&rt=nc&si=%2B%2FdyeONeI583Qq%2BywN9hMMF8bxs%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

The Magee is an error card. Probably back in the 1910s there were lots of people, who did not even want the card, BECAUSE of the error, and would not pay 5 Cents. Today, such a card is worth more then 9.000 USD for a 18.000.000 % return on investment. Yes, thats 18 million percent !
These examples are the reason, why rich people give it a try. They factor in the risk and possible losses, but they know about potential and collecting value as well.

So, judging from past experience. When it comes to older (rarely modern day of active players !!!) high-end cards, at the end of the day, the fools were usually the ones doubting, but rarely the ones investing ;-)

Couldn't agree more! His Exquisites are the way to go now!

I think the terminology may be MJ cards are over-valued? MJ's certainly not over-rated. There's other legends' who've achieved so much more, but MJ's always been considered the GOAT for a reason.

Re: the MJ card, how did Beckett get it wrong? I don't understand. The seller of the card seems to have edited their listing with mention of it being a Fleer Auction, but I still don't understand how Beckett got it wrong...

I've seen "Fleer Auction" cards still get graded, and even those without GU/Patch swatches inserted! After all, it's still a card, right?

MJ is also over-legitimate.... :red: (just messin')
Not contesting he's the GOAT, I have no desire to be lynched, just that even the best can be over-rated..
