Well I am slowly getting sick of collecting his cards. The prices are way to crazy atm.

People seem to be working together to elivate the market in hope to snag someone.

Even ex fleer auction (or reprints who knows) cards are selling high.

here is an example:
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trksid=p4340.l2557&item=110889914357&nma=true&rt=nc&si=ZCM7RvOJU0djs63Sibj4SquUB5Y%3D&sspagename=STRK:MEWAX:IT&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

Totally unprofessional of BGS for getting it wrong in the first place and shame on the seller for claiming it /100 when the photos CLEARLY have no numbering on back.

The worst part is this auction appears to be shilled, and to tell you the true I don't know if the winning bidder is a real winner or not. If he is he just waste $5K.

Now this guy either has too much money to spend or something is fish, as there are more THAN one seller with great MJs on eBay. 96% bid activity from one seller is a bit suss. but who knows perhaps its possible.

That auction and the confusion with the Playmakers Theatre is a joke. $5000 for that is stupid.

Jordan is certainly overpriced, the big time Jordan collectors however will tell you that he will only continue to go up. I disagree, I just don't think people will continue to collect most of those 90's inserts in another 10-20 years. Of course the numbered 90's stuff will always be very expensive as well as some of the other key cards like 93/94 Finest refractors that are classics.

To say Jordan is over-rated is a bit of a stretch. The guy put the NBA on the world map.

There is so many dodgy dealings with Jordan stuff also so it's hard to gauge a true value of his stuff.

Jordan over rated? Really? lol Have to diagree with that! I think all these achievements may say different

  • Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2009
  • 6-time NBA champion: 1991-93, 1996-98 (all with Chicago Bulls)

  • Second Team: 1985[8][9]

I think some of his card prices are inflated at the moment and that doesn't help his collectors. He will always command high prices, especially with his limited/numbered cards. I can't wait to see what effect demand has for his exquisites in time to come.

I think you're right in thinking there are a few people that do what they can to push the prices up to crazy amounts to kill the market for most.

The insert thing is ridiculous imo which is why I wont buy into any mj inserts these days. There is still plenty of value in mj autos however. I went through a stage of dejection as you are right now with the whole insert thing and didn't buy an mj for over a year now im picking up the occasional mj auto for the collection. For the price of that fleer auction/backdoor card you could have 3 on-card autos of him where he actually held the card and signed it.

LOL i didn't think we needed a list of MJs acheivements to know he is a great player

In anycase, it would appear that the buyer is an aussie.

Does anyone know him? It would be nice to warn him before he pays for this flaeer auction card (potential fake printed outside like the 1985 star card, but I would guess BGS should be able to spot it, but who knows when they mislable it).

I haven't bought a Jordan card for over 18 months and nothing decent for over 2 years..... I just can not justify the prices of his stuff. I have however bought memorabilia type stuff and other collectable stuff featuring the G O A T...

On a side note, love how the shit stirrers, with nothing better to do then attempt to start up arguments appear in threads like this....

I feel your pain Dom, hence why Ive gone off on the PC's I have the last few years and now concentrate on Gibson and Deng....

I'm not sick of collecting MJ's but it is exhaustive looking for good deals as they're so expensive nowdays. I can't justify spending big $'s on high end inserts when I know I can buy a nice MJ auto instead so I totally agree with Verse1 on that!

yer Deng is my side collection due to my charity ocnnection to Sudan (my mate knows him from the refugee days, not like best buds but just like we have mates from primary school we kind of catchup with), but only get ones I like (I don't go crazy getting all).

I agree some of the autos are at a decent price still. If I had no ambissions of owning a house (and wnated to keep my gf haha), I would probably layout some $$$ on one of these crazy 90s cards.

Haha! Lies mate, lies! I can see that you clearly wrote all that off the top of ya head and even spent hours formatting it all pretty-like... cut'n'paste, hah, not likely... time-stamps don't quite add up, but, what do the facts matter ay? :D

So... If MJ isn't over-priced and over-rated, the gap between his prices and his competitors should kinda reflect the gap between his career/achievements and theirs. Not really tangible, so instead I sat down with mah trusty 14-month old Beckett and opened it to random pages and looked for the words "Michael Jordan". I then went to eBay to calculate the average figures from recent sales of the MJ in that particular set and those of his nearest rivals. I made sure to get a mix from the 90s thru to the almost present, that I had a selection of inserts, autos, and gu's, and that I only used ungraded sales. Here's what I spent too long looking at:

96-97 Ultra Starring Role
Jordan $226 - Garnett $22 - Shaq $15 - Admiral $12 - Olajuwon $10

97-98 Z-Force Rave Review
Jordan $150 - Shaq $52 - Pippen $32 - KG $23

98-99 Metal Universe Linchpins
Jordan $560 - Kobe $200 - Timmy $43

01-02 Ultimate Collection Signatures
Jordan $585 - DrJ $77 - Garnett $50 - Joe Johnson $8.50

04-05 SPx Winning Materials Auto
Jordan $600 - Garnett $89

05-06 Sweet Shot Sweet Swatches
Jordan $41 - LeBron $15 - CP3 $4 - Shaq $4

05-06 Upper Deck Trilogy The Cutting Edge
Jordan(SP) $34 - LeBron $14 - Kobe $11

08-09 Upper Deck Ultimates
Jordan $7 - Pete Maravich $1 - Pippen $1.3 - Chamberlain $1 - DrJ $0.1

08-09 Fleer Feel the Game
Jordan $36 - LeBron $5 - Melo $1.5 - Dwight Howard $1

Pretty rough I know, but based on those numbers, I'm not signing Jordan to my team if I can have 5 Pippens, or 3 Kobes, or 8 Garnetts, or 8 Shaqs, or 3 LeBrons, or a proportionate mix of them instead. The gaps between Jordan and everyone else are too large for my liking. The gaps between everyone else seem semi-reasonable to me. Over-rated and over-priced in my opinion, why else would people be willing to pay so high.. I can't accept that he was that much better than anyone else has ever been. I'm hesitant to believe he is the best to have played the game at all, but I do accept that he was by far the greatest in his time, and greater than anyone else has been in their own time. Prices are up coz it's retro and people seem to like retro, people who grew up hypnotised by his awesomeness that are now able to splash out. His Airness' bubble will have to burst and dissipate sometime, but it could be a while. Many people say Jordan prices are crazy yet don't associate that with being over-rated. Sadly I can't prove he is over-rated & over-priced any more than anyone can convince me that he isn't, it's only speculation and opinion. But I do know for sure that, both, the chicken came before the egg, and the glass is half-full.

No nino, that's not what I mean. I'm comparing what people pay (how over-rated he is) to an estimation of how much better he was/is than anyone else. Not the cardboard, but public opinion for the over-rated part, it's not like that many people collect Jordan cards just because they are the most expensive to collect.

Good work! I can see the point you are trying to make, but my point still stands, MJ is not over rated. He has done things on court that no one has ever, and may never come close to.
On the other hand I agree about his prices, they are pretty high at the moment. But his prices are dictated by demand, and obviously he is what collectors want. You may not agree with it, but things are only worth what people are prepared to pay for it. And they are prepared to pay the big bucks for his cards!

I have collected MJ for years and finally threw my hands up in disgust about 6 months or so ago. I refuse. Not only are the prices ridiculous, but you can't trust the ending price of 99% of these auctions either. Check the bid history of that Playmaker auction - shilled, shilled, shilled. Shady. Anyone paying these prices is crazy.
