Probably the introduction of much better stuff. Who wants inserts and nice base when you can get Autos and GUs? I still collect a few base sets here and there but Panini has produced some of the most boring ie. Prestige, Threads, Timeless Treasures and others with so many variations it's ridiculous ie. Certified. Also postage cost is a factor in collecting base nowadays especially if you don't bust any of the boxes. Just isn't worth it sometimes...
..maybe.. 
I looked into getting all his rc but realized real fast there is that /99 exquisite which is out of my league as far as spending goes. I'm thinking of going with a side pc and getting any nice rose cards I like when they pop up. Starting with rc and going from there. Side pc something I like and that's very affordable with multiple players so I still have some $$$ to chase rose

I think that's the best advise I have got since starting this thread is budget or how much to spend and setting amounts. Heading for a holiday to USA in august and after that will free up some money to chase a bit harder so will see what time brings.

Yep, set your budget but collect the player(s) you like the most, even if it's expensive, 'cause I don't see the point of collecting someone you're enjoying so-so (and spend thousand of $ on him).
I don't think it's possible to get all the cards of a specific player, so try to take first only the ones you're digging, and then starting to complete your collection...it's really a question of time before having a nice collection

Damn that's a tough predicament. Perhaps collecting cards of your favourite player is not of best interest (financially). Has Rose always been your favourite player? Surely you must have followed someone "back in the day"?
My favourite player has always been Charles Barkley, and whilst I have a few hundred of his cards, I could never find myself pursuing the total chase of all his cards as there's some rather pricey auto's out there.
I got myself back into collecting and then the Mavs drafted Devin Harris (via WAS), and I did my research, liked the kid's game, and started collecting him. His cards weren't OVERLY cheap at the time of production, but years later, they're pretty cheap now, and that helps, but we're not comparing apples with apples when talking D.Rose either.
You need to ask yourself, what can you financially afford to collect, and how often to you want to buy cards. If you like the rush of having cards come in every week/couple of weeks, then you should look at reducing your desires, and perhaps chase something more (practically) affordable, like perhaps chase sets, or something. Some of these new auto sets (Take those Elusive Ink's from Panini) have some of my favourite looking players on there, and they're quite affordable!
Hopefully you like whatever decision you go with and remember, it's not about worth or value, this is a hobby, hence we collect, so it should be about personal enjoyment, and taking pride in your stuff. Ask yourself, would you enjoy having 1 card that you paid $100 for or having a dozen cards you paid $100 for.

For instance, I'm searching for Paul George cards, and as he's a current player, you can find new cards popped up on ebay almost every week, so the temptation is really big to chase ALL the cards
Besides this collection, I decided to take AU's and 1/1 of Jerry Sloan (sadly, I'm not able to focus on only ONE thing
) , so very rare cards, and I don't have monthly outgoings on this side PC.For me it's a good balance, Paul George's PC costs me a lot of money and time, and it's nice sometimes to take a breath of fresh air with a side collection which is not your main priority and is not so expensive.
And once again, imho, the player you like the most should have the top priority in your way of collecting, even if he's quite expensive or doesn't have the nicest cards in the world. I truly believe that the passion for basketball, a special player /team/ set or simply the fact you're digging the style of a player (for whatever reason) is way more important than collecting something which is simply affordable.

Great advise mate very gd point about the reason to collect a player rather than afford. I think a small side pc along with getting some d rose will be the way to go. Paul George has the goods also very good player
I returned to collecting recently with a few impulse buys of AFL Select/Teamcoach. I was looking for Bulldogs commons to crudely tape to my computer at work. It was a buzz to get a blue redemption, but there were no Bulldogs screamers on offer. I found OzCardTrader looking to offload it and other inserts in exchange for Bulldogs. Looking around, I saw
and had it in hand a week later. Though I questioned my willingness to justify the price, I could understand the market value, and realised the personal value was a bonus. Joakim Noah's signature is awsome. I've been keeping an eye out for it since, but I know I can't afford all of them. I've only got two since -
I picked up some inserts of other Bulls along the way, adding them to trades to spread the postage. Splurged again when this /5 came up -
I've also secured some Rose/Deng/Noah GU, but I prefer autos. Taj Gibson is my favourite non-starter in the Bulls. Somehow I've managed to grab alot of his autos. They are priced within limits to aim for a sizable collection.
Inbetween all this, I got a box of P&P. It's nice to build the PC, but opening packs is fun too, and (hopefully) adds to the PC or tradeable stock. 2 cards shy of the Base set, and scoured ebay to build insert sets. Many are still incoming, but I've decided probably trade off the Elusive Inks instead of build that set. Spreading myself thin on that chase, and I've noticed many people chasing it here so I can help them complete it instead (in exchange for my main focus - Taj/Joakim/Luol/DRose).
I've abandoned the AFL cards. Won't be buying anymore, but still pickup Bulldogs in trade if there's no NBA on offer.
I've also got 2 boxes of Game of Thrones on order. Big fan of the series and read al the books over the last 6 months.
The main thing I've learnt since rejoining the hobby - If someone wants what you have, but has nothing you want, look for something you know might be wanted by someone who might have something you want. It doesn't hurt to have tradeable assets, and saves the cashflow.

At the end of the day most of use collect for the enjoyment and if you are not enjoying it then its only a matter of time before you sell up and are back to this same question. If you like Rose then collect him. If you want to only collect high end then just put the $$$ away and pick one up every now and then.
For me I like the chase so need to constantly be on the look out for something - it doesn't matter if its a $2 card of a $200 card the thrill of finally tracking it down and getting it in hand is rewarding and what keeps me coming back for more.
Everyone is different so go with you gut!
Smk762, love joakim sig also it's always been on my mind to go after him. I don't bust boxes so very hard to get trade bait, maybe I need to expand a bit also to open up more options (as in buy a box or two and use some trade)
Bronbron, so true I'm finding that when I track a d rose rc from ozcards as there aren't many and I'm trying to avoid eBay where possible it's so rewarding to get that card in hand. That's the thrill for me for sure but they just to far n few in-between.

Here's an idea and what I'm doing, I was juggling 5 pc players before plus my set chases, as much as I liked my fields, hardaway, Courtney lee and wade pc's I ended up selling them pretty much all off, I kept my Eddie house as its a cheap pc (plus most of his stuff is not very moveable!) and now I'm just collecting one nice auto And maybe a patch of all these players plus many others I like. I like this as its far less restrictive, there's no 100% checklist I have to agonize over, and my collection is Becoming alot more diverse and colorful. So rather try and get as many rose cards as possible, why not just work towards that 1 really awesome rc auto? Then You can put that on display along with a select few other cards rather then having 100s of Rose cards sitting in folders and boxes that you or other people. Ever really get to look at.
