If I could give you one tip, don't waste your time with the low end stuff. I'd select a few reasonably prices cards and save towards them. Having 100-200 $1 cards is nice of course, but think of the postage spent on all that. You could've probably saved and had an awesome $350 Exquisite auto of him (possibly an auto patch?). Or a sweet refractor maybe (not too sure how high Rose's cards go).

I always find if I buy quality cards ($30 - $50 range) they at least hold their value, sometimes go up a touch, then I sell them (even if pc unfortunately) to get something VERY nice. It's kind of another way of saving + collecting at the same time. :)

I had 100 Tim Duncans, but they were nowhere near as nice to look at as my Playmakers Theatre T.D.
I think it's going a bit far to say that, $350 cards aren't in everyone's price range. I for one cannot afford that kind of money, So I have to stick to lower-end stuff does that mean I'm wasting my time?

not to contradict any of the above posts, but in all the time and bucket loads of money ive spend on the hobby its good to also learn the hobby. I think that to completly get the most out of what and why u love it is to get the base - then realise you shouldn't have got the base - then get the gu - then realise you souldn't have got them - then to the cheap autos - to the high end stuff ect. This then makes you a better rounded collector and will help you define your own collecting goals as everyone is different to what they expect and want from their own collections

This explains the sale thread with 145 different incomplete sets, 2 million GU's and 1.45 Million Autos

That's pretty much what I was saying except just skipping collecting ALOT of the junky stuff. We've all learnt that way and you can even admit that you learned that way. I'm saying he should skip it. That is advice. I wish someone was there to tell me that. I bought ALOT of junky boxes also when I got back in to the hobby. Now they were fun and I totally get what you're saying, because I was getting excited at a game used card in a box, but really I wish someone told me to spend that card on a nice single.

I even bought a box of 04/05 Flair (in about 06 I think) for $150. It is a one pack box with 2 game used and an auto. Got about $12 worth of stuff in there. Think of what you could've gotten for $150 then. PMG's, Exquisites, Jambalaya's. Hell probably coulda got a Jordan Noyz Boyz:)

It certainly does not, it's just advice. How much is your collection worth? Let's say someone purchased it for what it's worth, then you had that money to buy the best Bowen's out there, would you? Or would you keep the collection?Would you rather the 3 best Bowen cards or 200 average to ok ones? Each person is different. I'm a quality over quantity guy. Does'nt mean I don't have plenty of low end stuff, I have loads.

It's not for everyone, but I pick up things here and there when I have money, then usually sell some stuff to gather the money for something "nice".

It's not often you have $350 lying around to spend on cards like you say.

Firstly, Every Bowen is only average to ok that's why I collect him

Secondly, I deffo see where you coming from. I'd sell my entire collection to get that 1/1 DeMarcus Cousins RC Logoman

sadly this is like my fully sick mike bibby collection over 500 rc's cheap but can't help myself now, started on a low budget 4 years ago and hasen't stopped. (now have some damn nice exq. stuff though)

I have found the Blair NT 1/1 Logoman.... asking $1500 for it?? I can't bring myself to do it though! My 3 daughters can go to dancing class every week for a year for that! I know what I choose!

Yeah a logoman would be nice. I really rate the 1/1's from Nat treasures. There's a T.D and I would give up ALOT for that.

i said to my wife the other day if i won lotto it would ruin my love for collecting as i could and would buy what ever i want

oh wow... Can't get him any lower? The Cousins one went for $3,500

If you want to collect Rose pick them up now or in the offseason. Pretty much dirty cheap compared to what they were a year ago lol because of his injuries this season.

Hi mate,
If Rose is your fav player then you have to stick with him. But you need to accept that it will almost close to impossible to collect all his cards. Not unless you have $$$ to burn. For me, my fav player is Shaq, during the time I started collecting him, I never had the $$$ to spend to get all his cards, so I just focus on what I can buy/trade and it took me years to get some of the cards I was not able to get during the time the card was released.

That would be my only query is spending dollars on someone who ain't my fav player. Not sure what to do but time will sort it out.
Btw shaq is a beast and a funny guy, love it when he a chuck on tv together.

Honestly, I would probably just collect all Blair's in Spurs uni then stop!

I'd be the same. I know rose will be there for another 5 years and has no plans on leaving. I couldn't throw big $$ at anyone not in a bulls uniform

I am a Spurs fan for life and if he leaves by choice, he is dead to me... if he gets traded against his wishes, then he is just permanently disabled to me!

Pretty this is the best thing Adam has ever typed. I'm exactly the same with my Nuggets.

Back on topic, As Adam said, you don't need to collect your favorite player, I collect Bruce Bowen, not my favorite but is in my top 3 and is rather affordable.

Kenneth Faried is my favorite player, obviously there is no cards of his yet so DeMarcus Cousins was the next best thing and I used to collect him and if you ask almost any of the guys in the basketball section here they'll tell you I had a pretty decent PC but his prices went up and up and up which made him unaffordable (for me) but every now and then I'll treat myself to a nice Cousins card.

But it is hard because everyone likes good players and good players are expensive.

So hard cause I love the bulls and rose is the man. Loving the advise

Sorry guys would've to reply to every post individually and everyones advise is much appreciated still unsure what to do but it's great to know when u need help with something there's a heap of people to ask. This is why I love this hobby

I started collecting Vincent Brown (NFL) because Ive only been back in the hobby for less than a year and I never really thought about a PC (NFL or NBA) as all my fave players were well in their careers and too much of a mountain to climb hobby wise. then I watched V. Brown him play a couple of games to cover injuries and he killed it. Was a real bright spark in a poor patch for the team. His college team is San Diego State so theres a good chance he won't leave on his own accord (well a relatively good chance in the NFL) .... As his rookie season coincides with me returning to the hobby, I love watching him play and he plays for the Chargers it was a no brainer and I started a few days before xmas.

Now I'm on fucking Ebay every night messaging US sellers asking them to ship to AUstralia (my 200+ 100% feedback has helped a lot), scouring the listings, using bid sniper programs and I'm fucking addicted now... Having a second income in the household also makes it crazier as my budget is now bigger.... Still not at the stage where I'll pay more than $30 or so for a card unless it's a crazy deal (I went to $95 on a 1/9 logo auto last week but it went for $105 :() but I reckon $50 level is next (and a card I'm watching will break that in cpl of days) then three freakin figures (nice 1/1's have gone for over $200 when similar was getting $80-$100 in december.

I always have cards on the way and am up to almost 70 auto or jersey (or both) cards. Not too interested in base (rookie) cards as the shipping doesnt make it worth it for 1 or 2 so I'll just wait til I can get "lots" and not too fussed either way.

ALso slowly picking up NBA auto's of players I like (esp old school from the hobby glory days) but no PC as yet.... Looking at Kawhi Leonard but $30+ for basic auto's not too appealing while I'm still driven about my V Brown pc and would rather spend cash on that

I agree, first collecting is really for the enjoyment. You like a player or a team. Put together your PC based on that. Price will always be there and if you can grab a bargain then do so but don't let that be the determining factor in what you chose to collect. Back in the day sets were all the rage and inserts were very hard to get let alone AU or GU. Nowadays products are stacked and it is harder to get the base sets in some of these. Comments?
