Panini NBA Rights

Yeah just look at EA with Madden have exclusivity and they've hardly changed the game in five years.
When a company has a monopoly what choice do you have if they put out a lacklustre product...but I do like some of Panini's stuff.
Might be looking at UD and Topps through rose tinted glasses they had some shite products too.

Yeh with EA and NBA, along comes 2K and bang the game's thrown right apart and now you've actually got EA struggling to compete and even produce a worth product of competing with 2K in the NBA department. Change is good :D

Topps Bazooka comes to mind instantly

We ll I still play NFL 2K5 and it's not even a competition between Live or 2K like comparing dirt and diamonds in quality.

From memory, the new contract negotations are in January 2013. I have a feeling that Upper Deck may not be at the table though. Consider the legal issues they had in 2009/2010/2011, plus there excuse of "financial distress due to the economic climate", I have a feeling they might stick to just college and MLS. Topps could come back in, but then again they might put up the excuse they had in 1959 and 1982 - not enough popularity"and look who's rookies they missed out on between 1959-70 and 1982-92.

I don't think Panini have done a bad job at all!

They cater for all ranges of collectors, they try different things, the try innovative things.

They have been fighting criticism from day one because people were dirty on them straight away for getting the sole rights. IMO, most of the reasons people say they don't like Panini also apply to certain releases from the other companies too!!

Panini gets a lot of unfair criticism. Not their fault UD were unable to field a decent offer and are a joke when it comes to managing their finances. Not saying Panini is perfect but they get a heap of crap heaped on them unfairly. When it comes to service I have found that both are on a par.
Only reason UD gets such a reprieve is because they have Jordan and Lebron. If they didn't have them then I dare say they would cop a lot more criticism.

And also don't forget, the bulk of panini products have been long standing football/baseball licences they got when they purchased the licenses from DonrussPlayoff LP. We all know that companies who do multiple sports use the same base templates across the board - panini has just done the same thing. At least this year they are revamping their line up and breaking the mold by starting with basketball as opposed to Football which is usually the first product/sport out.

I personally do like Panini's products but I would like to see UD or Topps come back just to get the competition going again and give more choices to the consumer. I don't think a monopoly is good in any business.

My beef with Panini is something I've been vocal about elsewhere. The cards just look cheap. It might be a high-end set, but it's hard to tell. They just gloss the card or use sticker or trapped autos, a lot of which cut off part of the auto!
Some of my favourite cards are Panini cards. However most of them definitely do not have the same visual appeal of UD products.

This is what I meant by rose tinted glasses it's just my opinion but if I recall Ud had some pretty cheap looking sets too.

Sure they did (like 91-92 UD for example... :p) but what I mean is that pretty much ALL Panini stuff has the 'cheap' look about it, whereas only a few from UD might have. I would like to see more quality/effort in design/stock etc.

I don't know I think the Gold Standard for example look like they've had quite a lot of effort put into them.

The RC autos were nice.
Most of the other stuff wasn't really IMO. Multiple similar-looking Kobe autos, sometimes with 2 per box, ugly trapped autos which cut off a lot of the auto...
Like with most products, Panini get one thing right, but the rest relatively wrong...

I don't mind the trapped autographs makes it a bit neater and the sticker is not so much in your face. I will say however the new Crown Royale subsets look GREAT!
