Hi guys, just thought it would be fun to know what other hobbies (minus card collecting) that people have. Not many people know this but im a budgie breeder. I breed some to be put into shows but mainly i do it for the fun. I own about 60 budgies (probably more now as i have a few babies coming out of the nests from this year) Here are some photos:

What other hobbies to people have? just thought i would set up this thread to have a chat about it (as the NRL season is a long way off )
Cheers
Brplat

WOW :woot:
those are beautiful, Brplat! how much does a prize-winning budgie go for?

as far as hobbies go, i'm a photographer, and an avid world traveller.

Hey mate,
I tried my hand at finch breeding a few years ago but with the purchase of my new house, the new turf didn't allow for it. I'm a mad figurine collector - Star Wars mainly but awesome McFarlane collections too. Like quasar, I travel too - being a teacher, 14 weeks holiday a year allows for it. As part of my travels, I have a cultural weapons collection that I love to build on.

Bevan,
Excuse my ignorance but what makes the champion one soo special? I noticed some with odd (?mutant/genetic variant?) and 2 tone colouring as well as the aqua bluish colour which I imagine are special.

I dabble in clivia miniata breeding. Everyone prob has a grandma that had the typical orange ones in their garden but here are a couple of mine that are a bit different.
1) Multi petal (has extra petals in each flower)

2) Yellow

3) Variegated (striped leaves)

4) Red

5) yellow twin (usually plants give 1 bunch of flowers per plant per year but this gives 2 as well as being yellow)

Im really a novice show breeder (ive won a few prizes in the Bundaberg show - which is only a small competition). I breed most of my budgies as a hobby as i enjoy doing it (even though it is alot of work!). Personally the most ive paid for a show budgie is $50, one breeder i know bought a bird for $350! he told me it only lived about 3 months after he bought it too!. To some people in big cities - who rely on pet shops to buy pet budgies - $50 probably seems cheap (seen them for a fortune in a few Brisbane pet shops). The thing i notice about most of these pet shop birds is they are very small budgies - as normally breeders sell off their extras to pet shops. However, in a small place like Bundaberg, $50 can buy you a very nice show budgie. Pretty much to make it quick and short, a budgie is only worth what someone will pay for it :) much like trading cards

Hopefully ill get to travel the world too someday! would love to go to either Europe or the USA

Budgies are judged by the width of their heads, colour, overall size and the throat spots (seen best on the budgie with the purple ribbon). If you saw the size of the purple ribbon bird in comparison to an average budgie it would be easy to tell the difference (see the link below, they are not my birds but i find this to be the best example of a "pet" budgie and a "show" budgie.

Redirect Notice

Personally i love the two tone budgies, and the yellow face genetics, however birds that are two tone and have 'bleeding' colours dont make good show birds as show birds need to have clean markings and colours. The bleeding of the colours is seen as a fault on the show bench. As you can see though i have a huge range of birds there (some smaller ones and some show birds), its a good little hobby for me :)

Also Mischa ive never been any good with growing plants or anything (just not my thing really) but you have some really nice ones. The red ones are my favourites from that lot - i could think of many places to put them at my house but im not a green thumb and seem to kill off plants

Before i started breeding budgies i did want to try finches but never got around to it. It is a shame that birds do take up alot of room and make a hell of a mess though  I myself also wanted to get afew figurines - but mainly of gaming characters (Mortal Kombat would be pretty awesome). I did want to get a replica sword of Sub Zero (from Mortal Kombat) but they unfortunately haven't made one.

My old man used to breed budgies when i was younger - even went to one or two national shows where he won awards. Aside from what Brplat said - there's also the bird's posture, shape of head (overly prominent brow is seen as sub-par) as well as colour and breeding. Some colours can only be got by breeding - like the purples, damn rare and difficult to breed perfectly.

As to my hobbies .... Transformers (G1, generations, alternators and movie), Books and music. Being a guitarist I have a nice, small collection of gibson/epiphones but am still waiting on Gibson USA to pull their thumbs out and get my prize to me... SG 6/12 twin neck.

My other hobby is building fishing rods. I have built all my own rods to suit the fish I like to chase and how I like to fish. I have so many rods its not funny, 5wt and 8wt fly rods, light line rods for lure fishing for trout, bream, gflathead etc, rods for off the rock walls were we lived near Nelson Bay, rods for everything I could think off at the time.

It always felt better to hunt a fish with a lure using a rod I built myself. If anyone is interested I will take some photo's of some of my work to upload to the thread.

I collect DVD's and now blu rays, love films of all aspects. Foreign films are brilliant, I also love to snorkel as I love the ocean and when I have more money want to get my diving ticket, and one day a boat bigger enough to get to Rottnest and back comfortably.

I collect Skateboard decks. Being a skater for 15 odd years my body is to thrashed to skate much any more so I just collect decks to hang on a feature wall.

I like the DVD and Blue-ray collection idea, thought I never thought of mine as a hobby rather than a necessity...........lol, Having close now to 600 individual items on my DVD/Blue-ray collection I needed a data base, all I am chasing now is a bar code scanner.

Im more into gaming, i dont see mine as a hobby but i do collect ps2 and ps3 games (*mainly ps2 ones) i have over 100 at the moment, but that isnt because i wanted to make it a hobby, mainly just picked up afew here and there now i have alot! lol

I never really looked at my DVD/BLU Ray collection as a hobby, I have at least 500 horror movies in my collection.

Nice work Dave, I have over 2000 now, have stumped a little as we are renovating and building a two storey house, I have built a Blu ray room specifically for my theatre room. It's a room just bigger than 2/3 toilet rooms off to the right. I now have to get a tradesman to custom make my shelves. It's going to look awesome when finished. Well I hope anyway.
