What Are You Watching On Ebay?

I guess your both correct in some sense, the point is to maximize your chance at winning the auction and the by product is that doing so can potentially save you money

It's actually kinda both - if you bid early it gives shillers and other stupid bidders (you know, the ones who bid up in small increments until they take the lead) ample opportunity to drive up the price and/or beat you out. However if you snipe and bid at the last second, there isn't this opportunity.
Yes, sniping saves you time, but it can also save you from paying more than you might otherwise.

Rubbish!! ive told you a million times on how to work your sniper...it doesnt let shillers in because sniper programs are to send through a sniper when your not at your comp and at the last minute. your final bid has nothing to do with shillers, they only come into play when others are bidding..your not bidding until the very end which means you can keep an eye on activity!

you will ALWAYS win with a sniper...only way you wont is if it goes above your max, what you're willing to pay or if the snipe doesnt go through.

There have been numerous times I've put in a bid on something I wasn't too worried about only to have some fool come along and bid it up and up and up. Had I sniped I would have gotten it for less. FACT.

That's a fantastic explanation there. You'll ALWAYS win unless this or this or this.... :P

if you have a max bid in mind and wont go over it, then you dont need a snipe prog. the ebay bidding system is just like a snipe program. e.g. if your max bid is higher than the last bid it will automatically outbid it. you all know this, so why is it so tough to see that the two systems are no different?
it dont save time or money.

If someones bid on the item is $50 and you bid 60, they have the chance to bid up to 61 then you have to bid higher to win it.
If someones max is 50 although you dont know it, you set the sniper to 100 and win it for $51 because it only bids with 5 or so seconds to go, how does this not in effect save you money. If the bid is not yet in the ebay system noone can outbid you or make it higher before it ends.

sniper is great, and you don't have to be up at 4am to watch a card end then miss it, then mash your face into the keyboard

yes, this example works, but you have to be willing to have a max bid of $100. and since you dont know what will happen you may well end up paying much more than you wanted.
we're talking about using the same max bid in both systems. of course snipe will win if its max bid is higher?! no ones disputing that. but what if you just put that $100 in as a straight bid? whats the difference?

yeah of course you have to have a max bid in mind :S do you bid 50 but really want to bid up to 90 on the normal bidding system and then not win cause you didn't bid your max? :S

I'm confused by people's inability to understand, is it that hard??

FACT!! that the worst fact comment ever, you dont put a damn bid in straight away, the only reason you would put a bid in is if they dont ship overseas and you want to see if it accepts your bid then you say when you win you didnt read the description and then they post it to you anyway...your snipe should be your first last and only bid....FACT 2 you were on a losing streak for 6 weeks! :P

so just bid your max...thats what i mean. if you know your absolute max in snipe, then just use that number normally?!

hell yes!! like i just said your snipe is your first last and only bid...if you want to pay 80 bucks for a 40 dollar card put the snipe in!! if you win it for 20 sweet, if you win it for 80 sweet! if it sells for 100 someone is willing to pay more...snipers are really big boys toys...you really gotta understand the market for your card, your budget, your competition and you gotta not be affraid to overpay.

You don't quite see the issue.
And I know the "well that was your max anyway" arguement, but here is my example.

A card you want ends in 4 days. You set a snipe with your max bid of $82. There are only 5 other bidders on the auction before your snipe, and the fourth bidder bid a couple of times until he was leading. The fifth bidder placed a bid with a maximum of $52, so your snipe wins it above the fourth bidder for a final price of $54.

Now, same scenario but without sniping:
A card you want ends in 4 days. You place your max bid of $82. There are only 5 other bidders on the auction, but the fourth bidder kept bidding until he was leading. The fifth bidder placed a bid with a maximum of $52, the fourth bidder it up to $83.

You then either lose the item, or see that you have been outbid and possibly pay more (either by snipe or by bid) to try to make sure you win the card.

you dont put a damn bid in straight away,

Doesn't have to be straight away. Could be a card ending in four hours or something. The longer there is left when you place your bid, the more likely it is that someone else will bump it up. I agree, sniping (with the MOST you're willing to pay for the item) is the best way.

im not sure youre getting my point? im against snipe progs...your 'first, last and only' snipe bid could be made just normally without any difference at all.

^And what happens if everyone sets a sniper on the same card? Price still goes right up.

Yeah but then you know you're losing out to serious bidders, not some ebay newbie who has no idea what they're doing but bidding up a card until they are the highest bidder, no matter how long is left in the auction...

what happens if ive put in a normal max bid of $80. the item is @ $50 with under a minute. a snipe prog with a max bid of $90 comes in the final 3secs and pushes the bid to $51. i assume the message will come back that hes already been outbid by my initial $80 bid? and now the snipe prog doesnt have time to put in another bid. is this possible? or will the snipe prog automatically outbid the highest max bid on offer?

A snipe is the final, maximum bid. It places whatever amount it has been told to.

Eg an item is sitting at $54 with 5 seconds left. Your snipe (for which you've entered $90) is placed at 3 seconds left. If the existing bidder's max bid is $72, your snipe would have you winning it at $73 and in whatever time left in the auction you've got bid up to $90. Another snipe may still come along and either beat or bid up your one, but you have UP TO your max amount bid when the snipe is placed.

It's basically exactly the same as you placing your max bid early (in that you're bidding UP TO $___) but it's placed at the very end of the auction, leaving less time for competitors to try to outbid you.

ok. at least it gets the final bid.
still an unnecassary luxury i think.

You may say that now...

But wait until you want to bid on a card and your computer or internet freezes/craps out...

Anything you really really want to get, that you aren't able to get the seller to end early for you, you really want the security of a snipe.

I also don't think it's a luxury to not pay more for auctions because of other bidders bidding you up. A seller can't shill if there aren't any bids to shill...

yes it is helpful against shilling i guess...
the comuter freezing doesnt really hold relevance, because im talking about an initial max bid, not bidding towards the close of auction.
anyway, i guess the moral is whoever is willing to pay the most will win, no matter how they put in there max bid.
